Cleaning Grips with Windex???

How we doing folks?

Saw an IG post from NCW that said best way to clean/freshen up rubber grips is to spray with Windex and scrub with a towel.

Thought it was pretty interesting and wanted to see if anyone here has used this method and if it worked well.

Soap and water works well, and there is a tire cleaner, Blechewite (I think) that also works. No idea about Windex.

Rubbing alcohol and Windex work well. Bleche-Wite too. Dries very quickly. Bleche-Wite contains chemicals that will "condition" rubber. I've even used brake pad cleaner. Edit: I would not use anything with a degreasing agent.

Been using Windex (non-aerosol) for the last 2 yrs. Works real well.

FWIW, I use BonAmi on my shoes after every round (leather uppers). Quick spray and wipe off all the dirt and dust. I know that might make some cringe, but it has had no bad effects.

Dawn Ultra - drizzle a bit on the grip, quick scrub with wet brush, rinse and pat dry with a towel. Fully dry in a couple of minutes.

Windex is best used on your hands in hot weather to help keeping a hold on the club.

For my rubber grips - A light sanding with sandpaper and a tad dishwashing liquid for me. I don't like to use any type of cleaner as it may degrade the rubber.

For my Iomic grips - I just wipe them down with varsol and they are literally like new again.

Assuming you have standard rubber type grips, a green or maroon scotchbrite pad and dish soap work a treat. Scrub as hard as you can; the harder you scrub the better they will turn out. About 100 strokes up and back for each grip, working around as you go. This removes all the oils from the surface of the grips and restores them near new. No spray on stuff will make the grips as nice.

I use a specific tire cleaner and a scorchbrite pad whenever they get a bit slick. Personally, i find it to be best method.

Bleche-Wite tirecleaner User for my Tour velvet and NMDC because they are rubber. My Iomics on wedges is just water because i read somewhere tire cleaner destroys them?!?!?

I use windex, a scrub brush, and water or dish soap, a scrub brush and water. No rhyme or reason why I sometimes use one or the other.

I just use dish soap, scrub pad and a good rubdown with a towel after.

 

As a guy that works in heavy duty truck repair, the trick is to use dish soap to wash your hands to get grease and oil off. Dish soap formulated to dissolve oil and grease from cookware without drying out your hands so use it to your advantage.

I agree with some sort of soap (dish soap, simple green, etc), but an aggressive scrubbing with something abrasive along with the soap & water will take the cleaning to the next level. Rubber grips are made by casting the shape in a mold and then sanding down the outside surface to add roughness and smooth out the surface. A sanding sponge or scotchbrite pad w/soap & water will take the grip to a level not achievable by spraying stuff on the grip (windex or tire cleaner) nor from soap alone.

Spray on Simple Green, once over with scotch brite pad or scrub brush, quick rinse, towel dry, done.

I second the Simple Green. Works great. I have actual rubber grips (Royal) and wipe off my clubs with a damp towel and sit to dry after each round. About twice a year I’ll give them a good scrubbing with the Simple Green and they really come alive. Been doing this same technique for many years with good success .

I wash em in sink with stiff nylon scrub brush and dish soap.......best way to clean grips imo.....keep em clean they last long time.......if they get a slick skin on em you can use sandpaper and than wash em in sink and they'll come back

For me reconditioning grips require 2 objectives:

1. Removing hand oils and all other contaminants.

2. Restoring the “velvet” texture.

 

For the first reason: that’s why I use dish soap and warm water. Dish soap removes oils.

 

For the second is where the scotch Brite comes into play. Like Nessim said that’s how the grips are manufactured. To restore that feel you just do the same thing.

 

When it comes to windex I would guess that it would be too harsh of a chemical. Anything with alocohol or harsh chemicals could degrade the grip. Acetone would be an extreme example of this.

Last time I ordered grips from Lamkin they included a couple of their gripes, which is their grip cleaning wipe. They smell just like windex, and did a great job on the grips. I use dish soap, warm water and a brush. Then rub em off with a damp towel. May try the Windex with em next time.

Windex has ammonia, I used just about everything and scrubbing them abbrasiveley and aggressively with hot water and soap has worked best (stiffest brush you can find).....sandpaper removes the skin if it's already gotten to that point

 

You will physically see oils and dirt come off and go down drain, lol..............seriously

 

A fresh tour velvet is still best feeling......

 

Thank God their still reasonable to replace

I'm a painting contractor and half of my work is cleaning things first. So I'm really into cleaning stuff . I clean my clubs and grips after every round and even my sand wedge when I'm practicing in my backyard. Hot water and dish soap with a little brush is great. I add a small splash of paint thinner to my bucket.( 3 or 4 tablespoons per gallon). It really cuts through oils and the sticky clay in our Chicagoland soil.

If you ever need to clean out a paint brush or a roller, even if it's water-based paint, put a little paint thinner in there. There is oil in water based paints and it will cut through it. If your bristles are getting stiff try washing it with fabric softener. It will revitalize the polyester fibers.
