Rickie Fowler Switching Iron Shafts (KBS C-Taper to DG S400)

I hate the s400 and love the c tapers. Just switched from the s400’s to px lz 6.0

Maybe he was tired of bending the tip of the c-tapers.

He confirmed he wanted more spin in mid irons after changing balls in an interview yesterday after his round.

Basically got paid too much to say no to the TM ball and now needs a higher spinning shaft to make up for the lower spinning ball. Should have waited until after the Master's to make the change but guess time will tell if it was right or not.

Changing shafts in the iron set will only effect the spin and ball flight characteristics he gets in the irons - and commonly the longer irons more so than the shorter ones. Changing balls would change it for all clubs - driver, woods, and wedges as well as the irons.

Glad Fowler finally decided to take a tip from my game and go with the S400. Haha! ?

 

I've had the Tour Issue 120 S400's for over a year now. Such a great feel in my irons (3-Lob) and gives me the trajectory I look for. Doesn't play as stiff as some of the other shafts I've played around with before. At least it doesn't feel like it to me. Certainly not a low launching shaft. But really has gotten the job done for me after I switched over from C Taper Lites.

Only pain was trying to find it at the time. But it's pretty readily available now.

Prior to the C Taper switch, he played soft stepped X100s because he played them half an inch short.

I'll post a link to the article, but and interview with the Cobra tour rep said he is actually playing s400 soft stepped once..

He's one of the best wedge players, so if the shafts work there, why not bring them forward to the irons...

Two totally different shafts in my opinion so I don't think it's as easy of a transition as people think. I've played c-taper 125 s+ and currently play the 130x with s400 in my wedges. They feel like total opposites so think it will take him some time to get adjusted. Still think he should have waited until after the Master's to make the change but guess we will all find out this weekend how it works out for him.

The biggest change will be the weighting, c taper is counter balanced more so than any shaft I’ve swung. Dg is more tip heavy

Huh, now that would be interesting to see how that would play compared to the S+ C-tapers.

Decision was based on $. He went to a lower spinning ball that paid more. So naturally needed more spin to compensate in his Iron set. Shaft change was the easiest way.

Definitely a $ decision, he said he liked the lower spin off the driver but needed more spin from the scoring irons

Does anyone know if Rickie has switched over the the TP5? I thought I heard somewhere that he has been testing the TP5 since he was having so much trouble with the spin on the TP5X

I think it was mainly the driver and the woods that he was liking the low spin on for the extra distance but then like you said higher spin shaft to make up for it in the irons. Personally I think he hits it plenty far that He could easily play the TP5
