Hitting every club off the heel suddenly. Advice welcomed!

Recommended Posts

Update 5/14/19:

Still hitting most shots in the heel. Have some pictures to show. Face looks square and manageable, but still getting hosel rockets. Very frustrating.

Suddenly hitting most shots off the heel with the occasional shank. I'm lucky enough to have a simulator in my building with a high speed camera of the club at impact. Even shots that feel solid, are hit in the heel.

I play to a single digit handicap and have never dealt with this before. It is a very new, uncomfortable feeling. I'm grateful for any help.

Here are two videos in which I shank a 7iron:

get expert help (Monte, iTeach) but one thing that stands out to me is you straighten your right arm a little too early before impact. My personal experience with that is...I lead with the hosel, face wide open, and in an attempt to get some contact on the ball, stop rotating into impact. At best it's a slice and sometimes a nasty shank. If you look at all the best players in the world, their trail arm is quite bent coming into impact...helps control face better.

But, to get there, there is probably a whole host of other things to address first (pivot, arm structure in backswing, transition move etc) so get an online lesson with one of those guys I mention above, would be my advice

I have taken to doing Monte's 2 ball drill during PSR. Address the ball, take one swing (like Zach Johnson, just don't hit the ball, I never have) to get the 10:30 / 2 ball drill feel then swing away.

This.

From the top it looks like you are firing your hands towards to ball. That is a game over move that will result in OTT, steeping the shaft and early release and when you don't compensate sufficiently with these moves the club goes out and the hosel gets in the way. Look up hand path.

Just spent the last hour reading more on handpath. I recall seeing a video about if you have more depth (which I attempt to have) you need to feel the hands move out more.

I guess I need to make some swings with some down then out. Hopefully that helps!

The difference between a center strike and a shank is about an inch. Quite often it isn't always a mechanical issue. Plenty of players have mechanical issues but don't necessarily shank.

Sometimes the perception of the sweetspot just needs to be recalibrated. People who shank for whatever reason perceive the hosel being the sweetspot. Trying to hit off the toe is a good method to recalibrate that perception but a more accurate way is to imagine the target line being an inch or two closer or in other words try to focus your eyes on a point somewhere along the inside of the ball. You only need to recalibrate the strike 1 inch, not six inches.

Dap is incredibly correct. Often what I will do is place something like a head cover or chopped up pool noodle just outside the ball. And by just outside the ball I mean it's going to look like you either hit it off the toe or you'll hit the head cover. Practice hitting balls and not hitting the head cover. You'll start to gain a feel for how to avoid allowing the club to work too far out.
