St. George, Utah Trip

Recommended Posts

My Wife and I just got back from our 30th Anniversary trip to St. George. What an awesome area. We spent a week at Entrada and played five rounds of golf. We spent a day at Zion National Park also. I can't speak highly enough of the area and people. Everyone was so nice. We played The Ledges with WRX member RSinSG, it was a very nice course and it was great to meet Ron. We played Entrada the next day, highly recommend, but I think you have to be staying there to play the course. We also spent some time at the range at Entrada through the week. We splurged and stayed in a Casita, and it was an awesome place to stay. Even played a little Pickle ball. We went to Zion the first evening and drove through the tunnel and hiked the Overlook Trail. Then we spent most of another day at Zion and hiked Angels Landing. It was awesome and scary at the same time. We took a day off after that to recover from Angels Landing. The next day we headed down to Mesquite, NV and played Wolf Creek and Conestoga. Wolf Creek was a neat experience and would recommend playing at least once. Too expensive to play more than that. We were not too impressed Conestoga, too many blind tee shots and just not as nice as the other courses. The last course we played was Sand Hollow and it was super nice also. Sand Hollow State Park looked like a lot of fun, for ATV/UTV riding also. We wanted to play Sky Mountain, but couldn't fit it in. Ron (RSinSG) gave us lots of tips on eating places and things to do while we were there, he was a wealth of great information, and a super nice guy. The whole area is clean with lots of new construction going on. The roads were excellent and seemed to handle the traffic well. We liked the town of Hurricane well also, its out by Sand Hollow on the way to Zion. We will definitely be going back to the area. The weather was great the whole time, I think it can get windy, but it wasn't while we were there. Next time we will skip Mesquite and just play the rest of the courses around St. George. If I had to rate the course, I would pick : 1. Entrada 2. Sand Hollow 3. The Ledges 4. Wolf Creek and a distant 5. Conestoga. Food wise, you have to hit up Bella Marie's Pizza, Anasazi Steak House, and Anglica's Mex Grill. A person could spend a week just in Zion National Park if he wanted.

Enjoyed the write up. My wife and I are set to spend a month in St. George next year mid January to mid February to escape our Winter. It will be our first visit and have a house rented. Nice to hear there are friendly poeple and the area is well kept. I plan to play some golf, weather permitting, and we have found some interesting restaurants as well. The Parks are what initially attracted our interest. Not sure a month will be long enough to see everything. We've been talking about going for three years and have watched the weather. It has been pretty mild compared to ours with very little rain and snow. I assume that will change now that we're committed. Howver, if it winds up being as mild as the last few it may become our "go to" spot for Winter.

Going to be in Vegas this week. Can play:

Coyote springs $50 golf now + free replays? Played it about 5 years ago and really enjoyed it. I hit a fade and like crazy greens. Itโ€™s about 1 hour from the strip.

ย

27 holes at sand hollow would be about $200. Itโ€™s also a 2 hour drive from the strip. Never played it. Is it significantly better than cs? My main criteria are interesting & varied green complexes, strategy & routing (Iโ€™m into gca).

Sunbelt - Hit me up when you make the trip and I'd be glad to give you some local recommendations. Always up for a round of golf too.

ย

Buckey -IMO Sand Hollow is more interesting than Coyote Springs. CS is a good course, but I think its pretty vanilla stuck out in the middle of nowhere. If you look at Google Earth I think its only 50 miles from Area 51. Pretty remote. Sand Hollow, though not my favorite SG course, is interesting and has elevation changes and good views. I prefer my home course The Ledges over SH but not everyone agrees with me.

ย

I Hate Snow - The Gun Barrel is no more. They closed and now its a sports bar type restaurant.

To the OP, you played the best St. George had to offer, the Mesquite Courses are better than Courses like Coral Springs Or Sky Mountain. I am actually a big fan of Conestoga, after you play it once, you get a good feel of where you want to be (16 and 17 are pretty dull holes though). Wolf Creek can be fun, but it is always such a long round, and when you are constantly waiting to hit on a hot day, it gets tedious fast.

Weather could be decent that time of year. St george is typically 5 degree's less that mequite or Vegas.

ย

ย

Many of the courses will do maintanence that time of year. But top two in St George are Sand Hollow(staff is errogant though) and Entrada(private unless you stay on property). Followed by The ledges(great back nine ok front 9, toughest greens in town) , Sunbrook(play pointe to woodbridge 9's), Coral Canyon(spending next 2 years on course renovation which could take it back to a top course it was 15 years ago), Sunriver(very similar IMO to a palm springs course with good green and through houses), Sky mountain(good value course and has 6-7 good holes with 4-5 dumb holes). I have her good things about bloomington but haven't played it yet.

ย

Most of them will have an idea of dates they are doing course aerification and maintanence but i would also confirm a couple weeks prior . I have a had a few of them change it on our group(including sand hollow) and that always sucks.

My course, The Ledges, does not overseed. How many golfers are in your group and what days are you playing?

ย

Let me know if you want local recommendations for food etc.

We make it to Ledges every year. Would love to hear some food recommendations, usually end up at George's Corner...

Also, I'm all for recommendations as I know nothing about the area. I wanted to just stay in Vegas or Mesquite since they have casinos, but the group opted for St George at an AirBnB. I'd like to play a few rounds/courses, but not sure I'll have time.

We're stuck doing an AirBnB since we're traveling with friends so that is covered. Where can I find the best food? That's the main thing!

Depends on where you are. St george, painted pony is great. Angelica's Taco's is awesome, Sakura is a great Hibachi. In Hurricane, Pizza wagon is good. Honestly the food at Sand hollow is pretty good in my experience.

ย

My favorites are the following:

1. George's Corner (pub grub but good food and sometimes live music)

2. Painted Pony (it's ok but a little swanky and a bit overpriced - only real steakhouse in the city so they charge a premium)

3. Bear Paw Cafe (great breakfast spot!!)

4. Capeletti (atmosphere is a little weird but it's an honest unpretentious Italian place)

5. Conestoga Golf club has a solid breakfast menu as well, I've seen a lot of events there so I think same goes for dinner. Lunch is also solid. I for once hated Sand Hollow food, it's almost like a school cafeteria

6. Benja Thai - solid and cheapish Thai food; in same area / mall as George's Corner

ย

Years ago, windy enough the sand was moving in the desert. Big greens and a lot of fun, only did it once but have played the 18 course many times. It is in my top 5 favorites, along with, Prairie Club Dunes, Wildhorse, Eisenhower Blue and Redlands Mesa. Beauty of the 9 is that no one plays it so if you don't have a tee time, it is available.

ย

We only played Coral once, everyone there was not nice, didn't see a reason to go back to where we weren't welcome.
