As someone who lost his father recently, and is soon to become a father, and was at Hoylake in '06, last night bought a tear to my eye. Not a man sob, just a bit of light dust, but to reflect back on where Woods had been to as both and athlete and a human being, and to see him triumph, is truly one of the greatest of any sporting moments of this or any generation, and something I am humble and privileged to have watched.

Awesome!

The family stuff after got me misty, but I was on my way, lol, it was a great story and who doesn't enjoy a little comeback and some measure of redemption at the same time. Had one of my daughters texting at the time, I know what it means to her.

Morning Drive is all over the "GOAT" discussion - sign of the times. For some reason there is a segment of the Tiger fan base that "has" to have Tiger the greatest of all time, I mean "has" to have that, and if you don't agree then you are the enemy (seen it on here for years). Small segment, and maybe it's an overreaction to the "haters", maybe it's just the level of investment in him as a fan, who knows.

I watched Jack win in '86 as a young man in my 20s so that affects my viewpoint. But I've never been so emotionally attached to an athlete, or any person outside my family, I can't have a rational discussion or understand different points of view, but Tiger does that to some people (and not including you in that).

If Tiger is healthy and teeing off in the wee hours (our time) in The Open, I'll be up watching (but usually am anyway if there is someone in particular I want to watch).

i was too young to see jack's in person - i was 1 - but, i've seen replays of it. i give tiger all the credit in the world for coming back, etc -- BUT, (and i'm a huge tiger fan, please don't taze me bro) all of the guys around tiger crumbled. he shot a 70 and had chances to stomp a throat or two early in the round and just patiently went about his business. if ANY of the guys including molinari had played -4 or -5...tiger would've had to scrap hard on the last few holes. the fact that jack shot what he did on sunday - and 30 coming home; is enough for me to say that '86 was better.

sorry Tiger - i thoroughly loved yesterday but, Jack came home guns blazin, older than you, and in worse position with his golf performance/swing at the time.

Yes, well, youre assessment is fine. Although you ignore the fact that TW

Was written off, came back from the mental and physical abyss and won his

First major in 11 years.

Still, I respect your point of view.

Just one thing and its not only applicable to your post.

Can we all agree to ban the phrase,

"Not even close" ; )

2019 by far. 1986 was great, but Jack not being in the final groupings took away some of the drama, and it lacked the magic and raw emotion of Tiger hitting the winning putt and the crowd going wild. Jack didn't really become a factor until the back 9, and even when he finished his round there was no roar as there were plenty of guys still in the course with a chance. There wasn't the same build up and expectation through the whole tournament with Jack either as he wasn't coming back from adversity like Tiger.

As far as accomplishments go Jacks round was the greatest tournament round of golf ever played imo, but as a spectacle Tigers win was epic and will go down as the greatest day in the history of the game.

86 also has the iconic “Yes sir!” call coupled with the great image of Nicklaus walking his putt down with the putter raised.

I was watching 19 while working so I definitely missed stuff on Sunday but it seems to me there really wasn’t an iconic call during the broadcast nor was there an iconic Tiger moment during play like a huge fist pump or some crazy shot he pulled off.

So advantage 86 in that category

Come on now, lol, kind of hard to shoot 30 on the back nine in The Masters in the final round to come from behind and also be in the final group. Getting a little carried away there.

One of the greatest golf comebacks ever in a major (greatest IMO) and it took away from the drama? I think the drama of coming from so far back goes hand in hand with being behind teeing off in the final round and there was a ton of drama at the '86 Masters.

Yep, no buildup with Jack, came out of almost nowhere. After last year and this season Tiger was discussed by many as a favorite last week and certainly come Saturday night. It was an achievement he won a major after so long, but Jack was considered to have basically no chance in '86, weren't even talking about him. Tiger, the opposite this year.

I fear in today's World, we’re gonna move on too quickly from it. Sure, golf will ride it out, but I dunno... the NFL is so much bigger now than it was back in 2006, ya know.

I’m wondering how the fan friendly, social media savvy NBA, and the upcoming NFL Draft will affect this high tide of Major Golf. I wonder...

Couldn't have said it better. I was just starting to play golf around '86 at 12/13, but didn't watch very much of it on TV. It wasn't on much back then either, so I don't remember watching that one.

Jack's more of an unexpected surprise, which are usually more exciting

Tiger's wasn't as unexpected, but more of a climb out of the depths comeback.

Both completely different and probably tops in their respective categories

I was watching highlights of Jacks 86 round and I heard a "yes sir" on 15, from a different commentator so that famous call wasn't quite as spontaneous and as as libbed (or original) as the legend has made it.

If I had to rank Masters victories, it would have to be 2019, 1997, 1986.

I guess if you are also 47 years of age, living in Montana as a 13yo, and happened to catch a little with a black and white TV you missed the boat as well. Poor reception in Big Sky country, thousands of miles away from Augusta, is laughable. Hahaha! "Can't appreciate it way up there, you gotta be there, ya rube!"

Any contribution to this thread by that guy too, would be vicarious at best[*eyeroll*].

If Tiger keeps playing well for a few years, competition with the other big sports' viewership won't be a problem, especially at majors.

Totally spontaneous and ad libbed - unless subconscious - Verne has talked about it many times. Just an FYI.

'86 was a huge year for sure.

Da Bears!

Jack! Jack! Jack!

Bird and the Celts - truly one of the best teams ever that season! (Jordan in the playoffs was electrifying - shots fired!)

LeMond! Greatest did it the right way American cyclist!

Tyson - but I could not have cared less.

I'd say in a different way, Jack was probably the most transcendent sports story until the collective heartbreak surrounding one Bill Buckner. :'(

We are so much into Tigers era that we don’t need to look back to see what’s legendary. Now Nicklaus in 86 shot 65 on Sunday to win by one and he made 6 birdies in the final nine holes. What Tiger did is what the greatest do in golf, they find a way to keep on going, with a lot of patience and determination to end up winning an improbable win. But storming the course the way Jack did when everybody considered him a past champion is the ultimate epic round of golf. Just imagine if there had been internet and social media back then how things would have been put in a different perspective altogether.
