Hello everyone! I took it upon myself to get a new thread going and hopefully a new outing put together for us sorely neglected Ohioans.

So... who is interesting in playing?!

In your comment, if you can provide your location/how far you're willing to travel, perhaps we can get a general area locked in and then decide on a course from there. I'm in the Dayton area, but willing to drive anywhere in the state for a chance to play with you fine folks. Once we have a course picked out, we can discuss dates from there.

**Potential Players**

Yeah, I'm hopeful we can get something put together. Not sure why Ohio seems underrepresented in these sorts of things.

Based on comments/travel availability so far, what does everything think about this course/location?

Stonelick Hills Golf Course (Batavia, OH - Outside Cincinnati)

https://www.golfadvisor.com/courses/21119-stonelick-hills-golf-course

https://stonelickhills.com/

I have not played there myself, but I've spoken with a few people who have and they raved about it. It is ranked highly among public courses in the state as well.

I think if we get a course picked out and then decide on a date, it will draw more interest than just remaining in speculative/planning limbo.

Yeah, I'm generally in favor of something more centralized as well.

Anyone have a good Columbus/Central Ohio course to recommend? I am much more familiar with the Dayton/Springfield/Cincinnati courses.

I know there's plenty of good options in Columbus but browsing from my phone it's a pain in the a** to sort through threads

That would be fine with me - its been too long since I've played there, but not sure if the location would work for some of the other SW Ohio people.

Definitely a great option though.

I’m in Upper arlington. I’ll do 90 minutes any direction for a day trip. Any longer and I’d probably do a hotel and make it a 2 day trip.

I’d second The Virtues if we are picking one that is worthy of people driving a good distance. The downside is it is that it’s in the middle of nowhere as far as after round activities go. If guys wanted to hang out/go out for dinner or drinks after it is pretty isolated. I still feel like if people are driving a good distance this course makes the most sense as it’s a top 75 public course in the Country. I’m sure they would do a “package deal” if we blocked off a large number of times.

My personal favorite for modestly priced non punishing “nice” public golf is Cooks Creek about 20 minutes south of Columbus. It is VERY MUCH affected by rain however. Flood plain area. If that’s chosen it must in the summer so the front 9 isn’t under water.

I Enjoy Apple Valley in Howard. Its just over an hour for me.

Northstar is popular on the North side of C bus.

I like Windy Knoll out in Springfield.

563 yard Par 5 #4 at Virtues. VERY elevated tee, dogleg left. Reachable with a nice hard draw....if you avoid the Forest.

My handicap is that I am more available during the work week. I have a flexible schedule and can take time off pretty much whenever I want. Weekends are usually reserved for family.

I'd be interested in a golf get-together, but it'd be pretty hard for me to work it in between work during the week and Saturday morning traveling league. I'd probably have to get lucky on the date working out.

I can suggest one course that helps a NE Ohio - CBus compromise (but probably doesn't do much for the Cincy guys). Deer Ridge (https://www.deerridgegc.com/) near Bellville, literally right off 71 at Rte. 97 just south of Mansfield. I feel like from me (Cuyahoga Falls), it'd probably be 1:20 or so? I've never played it, but have heard nothing but good things. I think @joekelli has played it, maybe he can chime in (and be made aware of this outing, if his wrist is healed up when it's going on). It's a Brian Huntley design.

I've also heard good things about Ashland, which is in the area between Cleveland and CBus just off 71, a little further north than Deer Ridge. Just another one to consider.

*edit - you can read a review of both courses here: http://golfclevelandohio.com/gco2017-local-ad.html

I actually like the look of that course quite a bit and haven't played there before. Location seems like it might work well for a range of people as well.

What does everyone else think about Cooks Creek?

I have played all of the above courses discussed except Stone Lick Hills which is in my home town of Cincinnati. Its supposed to be amazing. Columbus is a hard place to do something because most of the really nice courses are private here. Virtues is a very fun and diverse course that can really challenge you depending on tees played and the wind severity. North star in north columbus is fun and nice as well. Will probably go private once the houses fill in around it. One round there is tough because local knowledge is helpful there. Akron and Cleveland golf is good and fun too but it rules out most of southern ohio.

Cooks creek is a lot of fun but it is very weather dependent. I might be able to host a few tee times at OSU Scarlet which is very central depending on who is coming but I'd need numbers and to talk to the pro shop.
