Random Bandon Thread

When you call reservations and make your initial tee times do they let you book replays inside the 5hr window?

Change, not change, I was just surprised about tight turn around times before even teeing off. As you say all sorts of things come up once you're on the ground.

They won't let you book anything that you can't make work 99.9% of the time. 5hrs has normally been the time between, but if you play the same course back to back or PD and BD they have let us book it it tighter turnaround times but reminded we have to hustle.

This is not their first Rodeo and they have it all figured out. They know exactly how busy the course is, how long rounds will take in different conditions and transport times between sites. After day one of multi-way  trips they seem to know the groups to watch for pace and ones not to. Nothing happens by accident there.

An example is we typically go for 4 -7 days and are 'fast' golfers if no one is ahead of us and we try to get out the first times of the day. I have chatted with random Marshalls on the course that knew the pace we played the previous day or two and will say something like "you set a great pace on Pacific yesterday, we really appreciate that."  I assume if they know how fast (or slow) we have played our rounds they are tracking everyone.

OM 9:50 am & Bandon 3:10 are the tee times for reference sake. Thanks guys!

You'll have no bother then*.  Even a properly slow round of 4:30-4:40 still gives you 40-45 mins between rounds. You're going to end up with either loads of time or even more that, so you want to get back out earlier than your start time 🙂 You'll be grand.

*Not a guarantee 😉

Pfft.

OM clubhouse is 3 minutes from BD clubhouse.

As long as there isn't morning delay of some sort, you'll have time for a bite of lunch and a quick nap, especially if you're staying in the Lodge

Anyone been to the resort in the last few weeks or so?

Just wondering how the nightlife is situated, any outdoor seating at the restaurants or is everyone just going back to their rooms?

We will be there in two weeks, just getting an idea of how things are being run there these days.

They have a couple large marquees set up at Bandon, along with the usual outdoor seating at Trails, Pac and now SR, and they did have the fire going outside McKees, but not sure what the setup there was, as it was as we were coming off the course and was just heading to the car.

At the Inn they ignored the 6-8 guys sitting around drinking upstairs, beside the sign not to do so, and I don't blame the staff for not wanting to jump into the middle of that. I found their room service to be good, as I used it for two nights and couldn't complain.

We were there just under two weeks ago.  There was a large canopy set up around the fire pit by McKee's as well as the two large ones (with heater units) on the putting green side of the Lodge.

All the other clubhouses have outdoor decks (with wind shielding glass), and you can eat your lunch outside at those, dinner too if it's not too cold.  No canopies on those.  You can see a lot of it from the course cams on the resort site.  Very limited indoor seating, no large groups.  We never ate inside a restaurant the four days we were there

Delivery is efficient, but I chose to have them call me from McKee's and the Gallery when my food was ready, since I was in the Lodge and it makes for a hotter meal to go get it yourself.  Saves the tip, too, which is automatically added to all room deliveries.  Best plan for lunches between rounds is to call the restaurant of the course where you'll be playing in the afternoon and make your order about when you get to the 18th tee of your morning course.  The food will be ready by the time you arrive at the afternoon course, eliminating about a 15-20 minute wait.

Grab-n-go breakfasts are available at all the restaurants and turnstands.  The site has menus for everything, including the phone numbers of the restaurants.

The 'wrong' bit is easy, but...

...

Spoiler

where did they drop the hole? Is it one relocated hole after the other they've photoshopped in or is that a legit single piece of land from elsewhere on property behind #10?

I noticed that my caddie clipped some kind of device on my bag. I’m assuming it’s a gps tracker.  So apparently they are monitoring a group’s  position on the course. Not sure how long they’ve been using these, but the neoprene cover looked well worn. I’m guessing they are only used with 4somes that have a caddie.

It is a gps tracker, and you get one even if you are going out solo.  They keep close tabs on where everyone is on each course.

I wish more courses would use them.  Instantly clear when a particular group is the problem and needs prompting.

They use them for every group that goes out there. Maybe if you're a single with a Sunday bag you get a break, but otherwise ya you're getting tagged.

They put one on my Clicgear 4 times, two of those as a two-ball.

Funnily enough, because you don't swing back past the starter's shed on Trails, I forgot both times they did it. Once it was between replays so I turned it in at Bandon proshop, the second time it was after my replay and I was back in my room at the Inn and the phone rang - 'Excuse me Mr. Duffer987, we're trying to track down the tracker you had this afternoon...'

Oops! ☺️ It was still attached to the Clicgear in my car, I offered to run it up to them, but they said I can just leave it at reception.

I guess I haven't been very observant on my past visits. The only reason I was aware of the gps this year was because a woman came out to the parking lot when we were taking off our golf shoes and asked who had it. Sure enough, the gps was clipped to my bag. 🙂 The caddie forgot to turn it in.

Terrible random question, anyone ever rent clubs at Bandon.  My bag appears to be stuck at Fed Ex in Memphis, haven't seen any update since Tuesday morning.  Trying to process what my upcoming trip will look like if they don't make it.

$60 IIRC. I played with a chap once that had an entirely too shiny Titleist bag and clubs 😆 Think they were AP2s (oh whatever the equivalent is now I cannot keep track) so as you'd expect they will be decent sticks to get you through that first day if needed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Apropos of nothing and because the SR yardage book was sitting on the kitchen table when I had lunch...

With talk during construction of the volcano being the potential finishing hole, was the 'best' proposed routing the following or something else (apologies if it's been knocked around already, but hadn't been paying much attention before my trip in March):

  • 1-3, 13-18 = Front Nine
  • 12, 4-11 = Back Nine

Maybe balances out the 9s some, but then you have the current weak link 10th as the penultimate hole after the excellent run of the current 4-9. Anyhoo, that's about as productive as my lunch break can get 😉

Good news for any of you Southwest airlines fans out there (myself included) - SW announced today they're now flying into Eugene, with some really good rates for the next couple of days; booking until early November.

Looks like you'll have a layover in Las Vegas or Oakland, but much short drive down compared to PDX.

If they add any nonstops from other cities this would be great. Flying Chicago, to Oakland/LV having a layover, hoping your clubs make the 2nd flight then driving 2.5 hours is going to take just as long as flying to Portland with no worries about layovers, taking off/landing multiple times, etc and driving down.

Exactly what I was thinking. Was really excited when I saw this, but the connections to get there would save no time at all.

I normally look forward to the drive up (dread the drive back) but this works perfect for me, as I'm right by it (my two regular courses are either side of OAK). So depending on how the rest of our foursome gets there I maybe able to meet them in Eugene for the easy drive over.
