Hmmm...tipping. Big issue for we Aussies. Point one - the $A only buys US 70 cents so when you guys tip $5 its nearly A$8 for us. Point 2 - I have seen guys in the US ask for a tip if they have to step sideways, well kinda. Point 3 - tipping is an ingrained fact of life for you and an optional extra for us. I have heard things like you have to tip a "buck a beer" when the cart girl comes around. So question - who do you tip and when? The barman but not the checkout chick? And of course - how much? Is there a golden rule? Is it different in every state or situation?

Great question. Lots of banter about who to tip, how much to tip, and when to tip.

Personally, I tip all food and beverage people. I tip non-public transportation people. Some of my tipping tendencies are selfishly motivated. For instance, I tip the cart girl or bartender so that I get fast service the next time I see them or need them. I tip servers and food service people because I've been in that industry and know, first hand, what those people have to put up with.

But you bring up a good question. Why dont I tip the person that rings up my groceries? They are providing a service that I wouldnt say is any less difficult than being a server at Dennys. I have become addicted to ordering my groceries online and then picking them up. I dont tip the person that brings my groceries out... and they are definitely providing a service.

Some one help answer my questions!!!!!

I remember the first time I visited Europe with my wife, I had left the server an 18-20% tip and their mouth hit the floor. Certainly a different culture here in the US where 15% could be viewed as low. The service industry in Europe pays much better base and most make a living off of it.

If someone treats you well, tip accordingly. Just because you didn't book a caddie at Bandon but there's one in your group, flip them a few bucks.

The service industry in America has tipping as an excuse to woefully underpay their employees. Tipping is bullsh!t companies should pay their employees and not rely on customers to pay them for them. I'll always tip 20% because it isn't the employees fault and otherwise they are screwed, but it is a crappy situation here.

Yeah, I was kinda leaning in that theory. Not just pay, but benefits as well. Didnt wanna go too far down that rabbit hole.

I think I mentioned this previously, but on my trip I did tip the caddy of a single that joined our group. Did that several times. I didnt ask for info from him (because he wasnt my caddy), but he was still liberal with general information, and even occasionally with information pertinent to me. Helped me find a few balls too. 😉

That's my approach: Don't ask for anything from another's caddie, but reward extra effort sent my way.

One time I was in a group with the only caddie and one of the other guys asked for a some advice on a shot. The caddies reply:

"Ask your push cart"

😆 We laughed allot.

..... It should be noted the caddie understood the vibe of our group so knew a joke like that would go over well and not be taken as rude or disrespectful. I was also in a match the guy - so I had my caddies back on giving him nothing!!!

That is brilliant! Fortunately when I've had caddies, it's either been as a single or in groups where everyone had them (whether double-bagged or single loop).

Conversely, was playing OM one time with the loveliest couple out there (Katy & Ken for anyone who sees them in the winter) and a single who had a caddie, who was a bit of a Richard.

Kicked my ball back once - ok give him that - he did it to Ken who joked 'gonna shoot record low today', he did it once more to me on the front 9 for a putt that was noway a gimme and I pointed to my ball and said ' that's my green fee you're kicking there'.

Had no trouble putting out the rest of the round.

Wait. The caddy was giving gimmes and touching your ball? (or the single?)

Correct: mine. He was tending the flag, as you do, for his player and the first time he did it was right beside the hole, so I didn't particularly care. TBF he may have asked - it's many moons ago now - and since it was beside it, ya sure fine.

The second time, as I mentioned above, it was a proper length of putt left and unsolicited, so that wasn't on and I let him know.

Not sure if anyone saw the Golf Digest post today but Bandon is looking to build a 6th full length course tentatively called “New River Dunes”, with sources saying that David McLay Kidd is the favorite to be the designer.

Just looked at a map and it looks like this course is about 20 miles

south of the resort.  Wonder if they are going to add housing here or just shuttle folks back and forth

If we have to space Sheep Ranch tee times 5.5 hours from the other four courses, this one will be 6.5, maybe 7 (and nearly impossible to do 36 per day during shoulder season if one of the rounds is on the new course). They better get to work on a five-story hotel or something because Round Lake will only help--but not completely fix--the lodging issue.

But I'll still book a tee time as soon as I'm able to!

Enough already? If a decade wasn't long enough the first time... phew. I guess you don't get to be a successful businessman without keeping the bit between the teeth.

With some flavour of the original business model plans surely intact - this isn't a resort extension, it's a standalone, literally across 101 from Bandon Crossings.

I had listened to a podcast with his older son Michael a couple weeks ago and the family has massive plans all over the map. By the time they’re done developing at Sand Valley he said they would like 10-15 golf related features between full length courses (6-8) Par 3s, 9 hole courses, putting courses, etc. He mentioned on there that they’re also looking to develop in Florida and Colorado. He said that Bandon is his dad’s baby though, so he didn’t want to get out in front of anything there, but said there were plans in the works for more courses potentially on the Oregon coast.

Maybe they will eventually buy Bandon Crossings and have TD or CC redesign it. Who knows where the grand plan is heading?!

Why? Because it isn't good enough? I mean Bandon is my favorite golfing place in North America by a very, veeeery wide margin - heck I'm playing there on Friday - but seriously why would they need to 'fix' something that isn't broken and sweep up a locally run course?

As I mentioned above, they laid all this stuff out a decade ago and they are simply reviving it. The initial plan was a super involved land swap - that even the governor got involved in - that would have produced a 27 hole facility, with rotating 9s, one of which would be deeply discounted for locals. This looks to be some resurrection of that, but only 18 holes.

To duffer's point, I highly recommend Dream Golf for those that love BD.

Also, is there anything better than getting a confirmation email from Reservations?

Finalized my trip in December with a group of 10 and added an extra day: seven nights and eight rounds + Preserve.

Nice! Were you still able to make proper changes? Or it was more dotting i's/crossing t's?

When I rang up for this week's flying visit I looked to tidy up some future reservations in 2022 and they really do seem totally booked up more so year over year.

Yup! A buddy of mine coordinated everything for us and already got dinner reservations booked for the group. We'll be over in the new Round Lake lodging - excited about that!

I decided to stay a little extra and added two nights on my own separate reservation. Granted a couple days before Christmas and a single, so pretty wide open thankfully. Called up there yesterday and got through without any hold music.

I added PD to the afternoon after the last round with the group finishes up in the morning, then added first off BT the next day with a replay on BD as quickly as I can get over there. Might sound weird but I want to end the trip standing on BD. Last guaranteed to finish is around 11:50 I believe, but I am thinking I can hustle over to Pac and BD to make the afternoon rounds happen. At least get a decent number of holes in.

I still have a trip booked in April that I am optimistically holding on to, if my better half allows it to  happen 😉
