I’m really surprised that Scott and others are using long putters. It seems like putting with a short putter would be easier than putting with a long putter while trying not to anchor it.

There should be at least 10 guys on tour using the long putter. The fact that so many guys ran away from it, or that belly guys didn't switch to it, demonstrates the overpowering influence of fear. There is no reason other than fear. They are scared of peer review and fan reaction, like this thread.

 

Mike Davis freed everyone up for a more athletic pass at the ball. But instead of embracing it and laughing at the absurdity of believing anchoring was the key, they got scared and ran away.

 

I agree that Scott leaving the pin in the hole on short putts is ridiculous. It was laugh worthy at Augusta...less chance the closer he hit it. Scott is tentative on those shorties and doesn't make anywhere near the same stroke. The flag merely exaggerates the tendency. It doesn't matter what the robo stats say from a given distance if the brain doesn't cooperate. Dottie Pepper described it perfectly at Augusta, that leaving the pin in the hole from that range makes the cup look smaller. It's one thing to leave those 18-inch practice green pins in the hole, the ones that are perhaps a quarter inch wide. Quite another with a full sized flag. But at least Scott finally seemed to recognize the issue at Bethpage. He needs to find a cutoff point for lulling as opposed to leaving, and then stick to it every time. Subjectivity is a killer.

 

BTW, pleated pants are awesome. Kudos to Adam Scott for not succumbing to the fear. Styles like that go in and out, often decades between shifts. Then during an "out" period all the weaklings run away, petrified of that same peer response.
