Golfing in the rain

Recommended Posts

Just played 18 in it today, never really stopped coming down like 'they' said it might.

My umbrella is too small so I'm walking all crouched under it pushing my clic gear cart, kinda awkward compared to my usual power walking . Gave up trying to stay somewhat dry and after the 2nd hole I went polo and shorts all the way.

Most surprising outcome is that all my hair below the hatline is now all sticky and dry from the all the oils and yuck trapped in my cap which dripped down over the course of the round. Look away, I'm hideous!

Golfing in the rain gets a 2 out of 10 score

Surprisingly, my wife came with me. We only payed for the front nine at the suggestion of the club house. Once we got to 4, the umbrellas came out and it came down sideways. We were cold and really boogied. The wife shot a 42 and beat me, I got a 45. Good game of golf, but a bad day to golf.

In Pacific NorthWest the wet season started in early October, and is still persisting. So our motto is improvise, adapt, overcome and carry a flask.

A narrow escape yesterday. Our Green Keepers have been doing a rain dance. Long spell of dry and cold weather meant our course was looking dire. No growth. Divots turning to dust and impossible to grip the ball on anything less than a full out short iron. And then it hoyed it down Saturday night and yesterday morning....greens and fairways so firm they flooded. I got to first tee, not looking forward to a round walking through puddles and et voila....the hooter goes. Cue coffee and sausage butty. Dry today but genuinely cold. A three layer day in May is not good.

Can you take our rain? Please? Southern Ontario has had very few days without rain. Got some downpours that soaked courses, and then have not had a long enough spell of sunshine to dry them, so every subsequent rain just compounds the problem.

If I am planning on playing and the forecast shows rain I almost always go unless it is a really high percentage or they are thunderstorms. Most of the time it clears up and you have the course to yourself or you throw your rain gear on and grit it out. Bad day on the golf course is better than a good day anywhere else!

> Call me strange, but I love playing in a light constant rain if it isn't too cold. Rain gear makes it easy. As others have said, it is typically very quiet on the course and to me very relaxing.

Exactly my feelings too. If it's light enough, I don't even need rain gear, just a brolly between shots.

> As long as it's not cold and/or windy and fairly light rain I'm okay with it. In fact it can make me play better by helping me zone in.

> But I'll always remember a round I played a couple of years ago at Feldon Valley, UK. It was sunny when we started but after the first hole it absolutely threw it down for fifteen minutes. Then the sun came back out (typical UK weather for late spring). The rest of the round was sunny and warm but it's hard to enjoy gorgeous weather on a golf course when the last 12 holes are played with soaking wet underpants.

Ah, the wet underpants memories of golf in the UK! Somehow, no matter how good the rain gear, the water always managed to find a way to seep through. At least, I think the water was coming from the outside. _Or was it?_

Playing in the rain is not that bad. The best part is crowds are down on rainy days. The toughest part is just trying to keep things dry like your grips. However, there is adjustments that have to be made. The clubhead slides through the grass super easy when chipping and the ball tends to skid more on chips. But, chipping in the rain is easier than chipping in dry sticky grass just after rains. Also, wet balls tend to spin less on full shots, so harder to work the ball effectively.

In college I loved the slop. I couldn’t go low like some others, 67 just wasn’t in the cards for me. But I could shoot 72 in any conditions, a cold, windy day or some rain was my best chance. However - after my last round of college golf I pealed off the rain gear and threw it in the trash along with my umbrella and 20 years later they have not been replaced. If it’s raining I’ll stay home.

It was suppose to rain, so most golfers didn't make tee times. So my buddy and I snuck in early and teed off before 8 and the rain never showed. Basically had the course wide open, and I shot really well. We walked as it was "cart path only" on most holes, what a blast, so much fun.

I will play in very heavy rain. But I adjust round time target to 4 hours 30 and at least give myself a chance of a good score. I played in awful weather today and did my best round. Tons of heavy rain and very windy. Golf is mostly played in the mind, I don't believe rain really makes a difference score wise if you are able to adapt to it / allow for it (ball will stop faster and putts slower). A lot of people are scared of the rain I've noticed however.

It ended up being called off. Good job. I arrived for my 7.15am tee time having woken up at 6.55am. Was in a rush and in no way prepared so I'm pretty glad.

In Florida there's no use for rain gear. It's either sunny or it's pouring rain for a brief period.

Leave the course, wait it out, let it drain, and go back out.

Pretty much anything GoreTex. I've wasted so much money on less than stellar proprietary material.

I live in Ohio and sometimes if you want to golf you have to play in the rain ... i choose not to play unless it's not raining. Now 30-years ago i would not of cared as me and my buddies would play a few then sit in the club house and play cards and drink cold beer and then go back out in the rain and chili dip ?️‍♂️

Same, I love golfing in the rain. For me it’s always such a joyful experience, almost like that first time every year you feel that first touch of fall and just lift your arms and let it encapsulate your body as it moves across your skin. Such an invigorating feeling.

I generally don't play in Tucson winter rain, it's rare enough I just don't. In any other season, I will play in it, it isn't generally a cold rain, so I don't gear up. A monsoon thunderstorm will chase me in, I'll usually wait it out, and go back out to finish. I have gotten well soaked getting from the far reaches to the clubhouse!
