Golfing in the rain

Yeah it's all gone a bit mad at the moment. We've finally had some welcome rain but WTF is 9c all about in June (I live in the South Midlands)? I had to dig out a spare duvet last night.

 

In typical UK fashion it's apparently going to be 23c this time next week.

Yesterday was in the worst three rain rounds I’ve ever played I think. The pockets in my bag, with zips closed were half full of water by the end, I had to empty everything out afterwards and turn the heating on at home to dry it all out.

 

The good news is that my waterproofs kept me dry despite the fact the rain didn’t abate at all for three hours. There were about 10 other people on the course that I saw, and at least 4 of those gave up as I saw them walking off after the 14th. My Kjus Pro 3L jacket kept me completely dry, my Pro 3L trousers kept me dry except for in two areas - the very bottom of my trousers near my shoes were a little damp, as was the area under my right trouser pocket which held my balls, tees and pitchmark repairer which was half open all round. I couldn’t be bothered to zip and unzip it several times per hole. My UA Gore hat performed well too although my hair was a little damp at the end as it had wetted out.

 

It’s fair to say it absolutely chucked it down solidly for three hours. Shot an 83, not helped by sodden grips and gloves to be honest.

With the late start to the year & cool temperatures & the fact that I'm a club member, if I have a tee time (particularly Saturday or Sunday when we are first off the tee) I'm there. A very good Sun Ice rain jacket and I've been fine (though clubs were pretty soaked after the round.

I imagine many of us, if not the majority of us, have lives outside golf, so the time we can play is limited. We've had so much rain this year that if you didn't play in the rain, we'd likely not be playing, or playing much.

When I was still working, rain rarely ever kept me from playing. But now that I'm retired, playing in the rain has pretty much lost its appeal. I generally play 4 days a week, so it's no big deal if I miss a day here and there. Here in northern California, it never rains between April and November, anyway, so it's only an issue for us in the winter months.

20 minutes from waking up to arriving on the tee? Admit it, you live in a tent in the woods by the first hole, don't you?

That's the dream. The golf club is a 5 minute drive. 20 minutes gave me enough time to wake up, dress and dump my clubs in the car, arrive at the club to be told it's cancelled. Ended up going back to bed.

If it's only two out of three, play. That's what my mate and I do although if it's teeming down before we've started and looks set to continue we call it off.

Hit a bomb off the tee in middle of fairway and can’t find the ball because it’s plugged!!!

If I was lucky enough to find my ball but then to go on and hit a fatty, hat, shirt, shorts shoes are covered in mud!! I loathed playing in the rain.

I have never liked slippery golf grips nor trotting through the mud.

However, had played many rounds of golf in the rain. misting, showing, downpour...... those were the most memorable rounds of golf.

I love that dry pair of socks and shoes after taking off the soaked through golf shoes........

Those were the days.

I use this rule too. Having to call off my round today due to the weather. I want to get out there but it’s very windy - raining and cold.

 

Well, in fact last minute I went out - the wind dropped. I played ok by my standards.

I'm curious as to what others use for a rain hood for the bag, to help keep clubs/grips dry. It's my experience that the rain hoods that are packaged with golf bags are essentially junk - Watching the Open, it looks like the tour caddies use something much larger and looser to cover the clubs. In a cart, it's a bit easier, with many cart's having the extendable bag-covering hood, but for those who walk - what do you use?

I use a push trolley. I use the one that came with the bag it does the job. My bag is some sort of Callaway bag, proper bag not a lightweight one. I went out today with a golf umbrella and a rain hood over the clubs. I imagine lightweight bag rain hoods are garbage and useless however.

The wife and I cancelled saturday past. Intermittent down pours most of the day. We have three days off this week, sunny skies forecasted, no regrets. Plus it was our 45th anniversary, had some people over. Its getting to the point where every day is a bonus.

I got a memo from my golf club today in my email. it was sent to all members. After 4 paragraphs, they not so gracefully mention that" Thanks for understanding why we close on rainy days, people walking while its wet destroys everything." I think they are getting tired of seeing me out there in waterproof shoes and a rain jacket at 645 am

 

id honestly rather play in rain and have the course to myself and play as fast as i want, then to play in nice weather and take 5 hours waiting on a 4-some to finish hacking at their ball with a hybrid from 125 yards-to-green.

if it makes any difference its a semi-private with a $300 a month all-u-can-play special due to some course renovations.

Definitely. How about they sort out slow play before whining about people playing in the rain. 4 balls are a disgrace on my course too, some take 5 hours and most members hit their driver in the dry the same distance as my 9 iron goes in wet weather. I'll play in the rain if I'm in the right mood, have the time and my body feels up to it.

If you stayed dry through the round, then, you really did not play in the weather .

I had played in weather when nothing will keep a golfer dry. umbrella, rain hat, rain jacket, pants shoes , gloves........ everything was soaked through that could rink off buckets of water.

Oh, yes, the golf bag, open all the zippers and turn it upside down standing on a couple piece of 2x4 to dry it up. Do not put anything near a heating source to avoid damaging cause by the heat.

You'll be good to go next week.

If it starts raining during a round, I will probably finish out.

 

But if it rained yesterday and is still raining today, I'll probably do other things.

 

Already soggy courses offer me two things:

• A tough time getting out of rough that hasn't been mowed in a couple of days.
• A chance to slip and injure myself. Was playing one soggy course during rain, and set up for a tee shot. My left foot sank about three inches into mud on downswing, and I full smacked the mud two inches behind the ball and badly sprained my wrist.
