In my mind, this event for him is almost like practicing to compete on a big stage. Would love for him to come out of it even more optimistic about the next time. It has always seemed to me that learning to play golf has discreet stages and playing in competition that matters to you, whether it's for $5 or US Senior Open, is one of those stages that you have to learn how to encounter.

I don't know how fast he will learn, and of course I hope he learns very quickly. But he will still have to learn. People in general when facing this kind of challenge can interpret what happens in a million ways. I hope he comes out more optimistic about his capacity to compete at this level than at the start. That is not 'giving up' on him.

> Maybe you're doing it unintentionally, but you're talking about future tournaments two holes into the biggest senior tour event of the year and referring to this tournament as some sort of warm up and experience. He qualified for this event; he's ready now. He's out there hitting golf shots, just like every other player, and he knows how to hit golf shots.

It’s about the context. I had these data points: his insta said he was nervous, schnee talked about confidence, and I know the context of a big azz deal without much prep in this kind of scenario is powerful. First several holes showed this. It’s not about hitting the shots; it’s about settling into the right mental place to hit the shots.

My point is: there is learning involved in performing at a high level under pressure and it often involves stumbling along the way. Some people misinterpret the meaning of those stumbles and that really makes the hill a lot higher.

Monte has righted the ship. Kudos to him. That wasn’t a trivial accomplishment. But my point is to suggest to him that he’s in a learning processes. This tournament is a part of a larger process for him, as I understand his goals. I’d love to see him make the cut, get hot, and get in the hunt. But my main hope for him is for him to leave believing he belongs out there and feels more confident in his next big event.

Yeah, he appears to have made a lot of long putts. His long game was terrible, particularly off the tee. If he does that tomorrow, he’ll shoot 78.

I am leaning towards this bc otherwise he is peak Tigering which just seems unrealistic.

I’m happy to say I could have followed you through such a big event. Looking forward to hopefully getting some coverage tomorrow. Give them hell and you never know what kind of run will happen. Best of luck to you.

Shot link was off. Those weren’t 15 footers.

After the first 5 holes I didn’t hit it that bad off the tee.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

The problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.
