If he gets his putting under control and keeps his wits, he has a good chance at making the cut, but he’s going against guys that have been playing events like this for 30 years. Any goals higher than that are delusions of grandeur.

You keep a positive attitude, play this course one shot at a time and go in with the attitude of going low, lack of experience means nothing.

I listened to Monte talk about other attempts to qualify at things (usually with injury) and I thought he was thoroughly confident (and I listen carefully for self-deceit). I believe he will play well. Which would be sweet. All he has to do is avoid kids' toys on the floor at night.

So awesome! I'm totally using this to brag myself too. "my coach is so better than your coach...?

I'm assuming he lived there when his dad played for Denver's AAA team and that's what they are referring to. Dont think he has moved.

It says he is a Californian who is from Tustin, CA and lived in Colorado one year of his life - related to his dad's baseball.

I know it sounds sacrilegious to say, but after spending some time with a buddy who just finished dealing with a major medical issue that is trying to make it on the senior tour, I had no idea how much different it is. He won four times on the Nike tour, played the PGA tour for four years. Playing with him last weekend(he had to take over a year off from golf due to a major medical issue, and had only been hitting balls for two months) we played the Dye club at Barefoot at almost 7400 yards and he wasn't really trying and shot 2 or 3 under on a day with 12-20MPH winds. He only missed one fairway, and only missed 4 greens. He played in the Georgia qualifier and shot I found out from him that the champions tour has smaller fields, smaller group gets through from Q school(and are severely limited to what events they can play), smaller groups for Monday qualifying. Then you have guys from the PGA, European, fringe web/pga tour guys that are trying to make a comeback or moving on from their regular tours. So you have more guys competing at a high level for fewer spots. Every way to get on the Champions tour is harder than the rest of the tours.

The Georgia event saw these names.....Ken Duke, Greg Kraft, Tommy Tolles, Esteban Toledo and Tom Byrum all qualify.

In short it's super hard to get on the Champions Tour and it's hard to make it through a qualifier, especially the US Senior Open qualifier. Congrats Monte!

Great first day in South Bend. After check in, we were surprised with a tour of the locker room at Notre Dame stadium, and had the opportunity to catch a few passes on the field! A truly surreal experience.

After some lunch and a good warmup, we hit the course for 9 holes on the back 9, which will be Monte’s first 9 on Thursday. There were some sprinkles all day, but it opened up on the 15th hole, the furthest from the clubhouse/shelter.

The course is in fantastic shape and can really be a hard test depending on how the USGA decides to set it up. Greens are tiny with tons of slope, rough is thick. Gonna be a great week! 6y6bii0q4sv6.jpeg

Saw an f2 tornado hit south bend. Good news no one hurt. Would have really messed up your hair.

Monte you considering going to the left end of the range and doing a few shanks on demand. If only Johnny was there. Would be priceless.
