If, perchance, you get hungry after schlepping around the course, I recommend the Evil Czech Brewery (great food and beer) and the Corndance Tavern (steaks!). For snacks - Portillos (pretty good Chicago style dogs). The Linebacker Inn is a local dive bar that is an institution; not sure it has been been cleaned since Rockne was there...part of the charm.

Is Monte basically the longest guy out there except maybe a few guys that qualified that we haven't heard?

I remember us asking Monte at a 2015 clinic if he was going to give the Champion's Tour a shot. And, now, he's in the Senior Open. Very Cool.

Unless Cameron Champ is competing with a phony birth certificate, Monte is THE longest guy in the field.

Had a great practice round today. We went off #1 tee with Woody Austin. Woody remembered Monte from back in the day and Woody was amazed at not only how far Monte hit it, but also how well. I’ve been good friends with Monte since my first trip out to Oak Creek, so I’ve heard all his stories from his Nike Tour days and his college days. But it was amazing to me how many players, big name players mind you, took the time to come over to Monte on the range or in Players’ dining to wish him luck and catch up. Just a few of the names: Ken Tanigawa, Brandt Jobe, Jeff Brehaut, Jerry Kelly, Bill Harmon, Rocco Mediate, Woody Austin, and a host of other players, regular tour caddies, and many others.

 

I get a sense that Monte belongs out here. The way he interacts with the other players, the fans, the volunteers, there’s just a feeling that he fits in. Any of you that have gone to his clinics and interacted with him, you know that he enjoys crowds and thrives in a group setting. Now imagine him inside the ropes, telling jokes to the spectators, having conversations with the volunteers, and generally just having fun. It’s been an amazing experience so far, and we’re only getting started. I can’t tell you have thankful I am to be able to share this experience with Monte and be along for the ride, up close and personal.

 

Let’s be honest, Monte hits it far, strikes his irons pure, wedges it close, gets up and down from everywhere and has a great putting stroke. He has all the pieces to be hugely successful on the Champions Tour both this week and in the future.

 

The only thing standing in Monte’s way right now is confidence. He has to exercise the demons of struggling with his game for so many years. We’re sitting here talking about his game and what this week means, and the confidence to know that he belongs here, that he has more than enough game to succeed, has to be powerful enough to overcome the years and years of emotional baggage that’s come along with Monday qualifying struggles. It’s a major hurdle, but it’s one I know he can overcome.

 

Monte routinely hit it 50-70 yards past his playing partners today. He wedged it close, putted great. On the last hole, Woody Austin said some powerful words to Monte as we walked off. He said “If you keep playing like that, you’re going to make a lot of money out here. I’m sure I’ll see you at the top of the leaderboard tomorrow before I tee off.”

 

Your support and words of encouragement mean a lot to both of us this week. We’ve got a great game plan in place and are ready to execute it tomorrow. The old golf cliché is true, “One shot at a time.” Patience is the name of the game. Let’s go get em.

That's great stuff Chris. Looking forward to watching this tournament. I've seen Monte play up close in the on-course part of his clinics 3 or 4 times and am amazed at how well he hits it while focusing on teaching. Good luck to Monte and you this weekend. I'm thrilled for both of you.

Monte, you’re a legend around here but with all due respect, don’t give 2 you know what’s about anyone’s expectations while you’re preparing to hit a shot and over the ball.

Woody has always been friendly to me and he is one of the finest ball strikers I have ever played with.

Those of you that have seen the recoil buried sand shot in one of my videos and at my golf schools...Woody was the one who showed me that shot 25 years ago.
