Dallas/Ft Worth Area Courses

Hey all, visiting Dallas for a day, have several hours between doctor appointments, so I wanted to get a quick round in. The courses close to where I will be is Grover Keeton, City Golf Club, and Tenison. I have no clue which one of those is public, but any thoughts on where I should play?

Tension Highlands (not the other course) is a good pick. Make a tee time because they can be packed.

Cedar Crest would be my other recommendation. Old school Tillinghast design that hosted a PGA in the 20s. It’s more of a championship course requiring strategy and good shotmaking. Also, it’s easier to get a tee time and the people are great.

Stevens Park is also really fun. Good views and a cool layout in an old neighborhood. It’s hard to get a tee time but definitely worth it.

enjoy Dallas

Played Cedar Crest yesterday and it was in fine shape with only one or two greens with a couple rough spots.  Teed off at 7:15 and was done at 10 walking and for $30 it is hard to beat.   It is challenging as others have mentioned.

Agree with Tenison Highlands and Stevens and would play those over the other 2 mentioned.

Thanks! Tension highlands is in the tenison park "complex" I'm assuming? That is right next to the clinic I will be at so it works out perfectly!

Haven't been on Tierra Verde in probably at least two months.  Walked the front this afternoon.  Nobody in front of me.  Nobody behind.  Played 2 balls solo and took my time - healing up some plantar fasciitis.  Was just in awe of how good the conditions were (other than tee boxes - those need some work).  May be the fastest I've ever seen these usually slow greens.   Walked the front for $14.  Like stealing.

Waterchase this last Saturday... immaculate.  Those greens may be the best local public greens I've been on this year.  Like putting on glass.

Coyote Ridge greens were punched a couple months ago and are healing up very nicely. Greens are rolling true with good speed, too. Bunkers are still in terrible shape but new owners should be addressing that issue soon.

That group just bought the course I play at in tyler.

Do you have any info on them?

Not sure what has happened but i played TV today and the greens were slow but rolled true.  It looks like they have hog issues as some of the fairways were torn up in areas and they just over seeded the tee boxes and have not mowed them down yet.  Also, the bunkers were not playable so kind of a let down to be honest this morning.

Does anybody know if Stonebridge or TPC Craig Ranch can be played without being a member anytime during the year?

I saw some 'charity events' at Stonebridge that might be the best chance to play the Dye Course...

You probably already know this but both are Club Corp courses. So if you are a member of Club Corp then you could definitely play Stonebridge. However, unless something has changed, Craig Ranch doesn't even allow other Club Corp members to play there.

Does anyone here have a connection to a member at Dallas National Golf Club?  If possible, I'd love an introduction for a brief conversation with them.  Thank you in advance for any support.

I'm sure plenty of people here do, but you would probably have more luck if you explained your intentions.

Any current report on Texas Rangers? Haven’t been since they overseeded. Friend is coming into town for 11/13 and was thinking of taking him there. Thanks.

Played one week ago, was in awesome awesome shape, I had such a fun time. Greens were in great shape, slower but they weren’t bad by any means

This month's Avid Golfer is the issue where they rank the Best of Public Golf 2021 for the DFW area. They do this by dividing DFW into East and West.

Cowboys Golf Club is ranked as the Best Overall in the area and has been every year I've seen this ranking.

Here are the top 15 for the East (out of 41 course) and West (out of 33 course).

Here is my only comment. Could probably be a lot of argument that this or that course is ranked a few places too high or two low. But, being most familiar with East courses, I do see one course that is egregiously overranked and that is Twin Creeks at #13. Conditions are absolutely awful right now.

East

1. Old American Golf Club

2. The Tribute Golf Links

3. Heritage Ranch G&CC

4. Tangle Ridge Golf Course

5. Firewheel Golf Park - Bridges

6. Sherrill Park Golf Course - No. 1

7. Thorntree Golf Club

8. The Courses at Watters Creek

9. Indian Creek - Creek Course

10. The Trails of Frisco Golf Club

11. Buffalo Creek Golf Club

12. Frisco Lakes Golf Course

13. The Golf Club at Twin Creeks

14. Prairie Lakes Golf Course

15. Pecan Hollow Golf Course

West

1. Cowboys Golf Club

2. Texas Rangers Golf Club

3. Texas Star Golf Course

4. Wildhorse at Robson Ranch

5. Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club

6. Grapevine Golf Course

7. Bridlewood Golf Club

8. Split Rail Golf Club

9. Southern Oaks Golf Club

10. Tierra Verde Golf Club

11. Bear Creek Golf Club - West

12. The Golf Club Fossil Creek

13. Sugar Tree Golf Club

14. Rockwood Park Golf Course

15. Tour 18 Dallas

Best Outlying

1. Tempest Golf Club

2. Pine Dunes Golf Club

3. The Links at Land's End

4. Squaw Valley Golf Club

I'm mainly familiar with the West courses but have played all the top 5 on the East list and my commits would be:

Old American is the #1 overall in my eyes, Cowboy's isn't half the course it is

Tribute at #2 and Prairie Lakes being ranked in the East is nuts

Waterchase not being ranked at all in the West is a crime; easy top half of the list

West #1 and #2 are extremely overrated in my eyes but can see why people like the them

Waterchase is not ranked because it does not have a club house.
