Dallas/Ft Worth Area Courses

This was in the article I linked to in another post which included what the City of Alice said.

However, in an announcement on his website, the governor did not mention courses in noting state parks would close temporarily. We reached out to Governor Abbott's media office for clarification.

Ultimately, state parks -- and golf courses therein -- must close. However, golf courses can otherwise remain open throughout the state.

Courses can close voluntarily or could be ordered closed by a more specific ordinance at a local level. In a number of Texas counties and cities, golf courses had already been required closed. Various governments in the state had closed their owned-and-operated courses as well.

Old American is $550 now and gets you Tribute as well since they merged. Includes cart and on course non alcohol beverages. Initiation around $3k. Only 300 members or so. By far the best deal in the area.

The Avid Golfer March 2020 report had some gross misrepresentations. As a member of one of the clubs on the list, I emailed the editor when it came out and never heard back. It's about as accurate as the "best steakhouses" list in the back of airline magazines.

Some of the higher end courses here that are public have 10 minute tee times which helps pace of play considerably. Old American is a bit of a haul for anyone who doesn’t live in either the Colony or Frisco. Home sights in the neighborhoods around OA feed into a solid school district and both those and frisco have the higher tax rates to fund that.

Despite being declared nonessential, Texas golf courses are doing their own thing during the pandemicNear the end of a conference call with county judges and mayors Tuesday, Abbott was asked if golf courses could stay open. His response, according to two judges who were on the call, was, “No. They should practice in their own backyard.”

On Thursday, Abbott spokesman John Wittman told The Dallas Morning News that a golf course can’t operate as a business with employees on the premises serving customers.

“That doesn’t mean, though, that individual golfers or even small groups of individual golfers can’t go out and play on their own,” Wittman said.

That might allow country club members to play at their courses, but it would not apply to daily fee public courses.

Everyone in my neck of the woods (Richardson) was doing either Sherrill Park, Pecan Hollow, or Ridgeview.

All 3 are closing tomorrow.

Will be interesting to see what Canyon Creek does. Clubcorp basically closed all the nearby tier 2 clubs (Hackberry, both prestonwoods, brookhaven) and told them all that Canyon Creek will stay open so if you want a cart go play there. I doubt they will be open come monday

Duck Creek is weird because it's been the only public course that I know of in Dallas County that has remained opened. 2 weeks ago they closed the practice range but have been doing tee times ever since. There website as of right now is still accepting tee times. Place it kinda of a dump and the owner is burning money so I doubt they can afford to close (long story short it was a country club that failed during the recession and then someone paid cash for it and tried to re-open it as a public course even though everyone including neighborhood homeowners knew it was an awful idea).

From 1986 to 2010 (2010 was the year it foreclosed) it was called Oakridge country club and was private club only (even had tennis courts and pool). The neighbhorhood in Garland that surrounds the course is still called Oakridge.

It was purchased and then re-opened in either late 2013 or early 2014 with a new name (Duck Creek). Duck creek name most likely came from the adjcent neighbhorhood in Richardson that's called Duck Creek

It had moderate success in the 80s and 90s but when it was sold to a managmenet company in 2001 (IRI golf) it went completely downhill.

The people who bought it in 2013 where trying to convince home owners to pitch it to help it re-open but nobody wanted to, that should of been the first sign that making it a public daily fee course was an awful idea (if local home owners aren't really motivated by the club re-opening then your not going to make a profit)

@RichardsonTX There was a golf course called Duck Creek before it was Oakridge...that’s the name of the creek running through there. That was long-long time ago, and I don’t remember if it was private or public or even if it was 18-holes.
We moved from right next to Oakridge to Fort Worth in 2003.
Thanks for the info!

Our group usually plays Pecan Hollow every Sunday am, but because it’s closed indefinitely, we made a trek out to Waterchase. Only ones there when we arrived at sunrise, and the rain stopped just before we teed off.

Fantastic course! First time any of us had played there and it beat us up bad; we all shot at least 10+ more than we’re used to. And not an easy course to walk, either...

But we really enjoyed it, and will be back again for more punishment maybe until Pecan Hollow opens back up.
