Moving to DC!! Seeking some advice on where to live...

Hello Fellow WRXers. Pretty exciting time for me... I've been tentatively offered a position and if everything goes like we think it will I will be moving to Washington DC in the next couple of months!!

 

I've spent quite a bit of time in the DC area the last 5 years but I always fly into DCA and go straight into town... As a result I've not done much exploring on areas of town to live.

I'll be working right off the Mall in the heart of DC so I'm kinda after a place that isn't an insane commute but offers me some golf/driving range nearby so maybe I can go hit some balls after work on occasion without having to sit in traffic. Perfect scenario would be a commute that I can make by the Metro if I want. I'd really like to keep my rent less than $2,500 a month if possible but less is obviously better.

 

Anyone have any parts of town I should be considering?? Thanks in advance!

I lived there from 06-09 so all I say is from that time frame. Where you are working, the closest range to your work is east Potomac. The course is not the best, but it’s golf. I lived in the NW on Connecticut ave just north of van ness. I preferred to play the Montgomery county golf courses. I think there are 6 or 7 of them, hampshire greens was always my favorite, about a 25 minute drive from my then apartment. Enjoy the city, I took it for granted and miss it tremendously.

Live in silver spring, near the metro. You'll be a short ride from work, and will be 15-45 minutes from all the golf you want.

Thank you both! I hadn't thought of either... Near the Metro is pretty important to me as I'd prefer to not have to drive my car to work every day. I'll start looking at places!

I've been in the area for ~23 years now and all I can say is the shorter your commute, the happier your life will be.

 

Not sure exactly where your office will but but "just off the Mall" is a pretty wide area. Find the nearest Metro stop to your office and work outwards from there. If you are near the Blue Line you could easily live in the Northern VA area as well.

@dcmidnight My office is within a block of the L'Enfant Plaza Metro Stop so that would be what I would use. Guess I'm pretty lucky there as so many lines go there. A friend of mine lived in DC for 7 years and she says that The Hill is where she thinks I should live? I agree with you on the commute time.... Trying to find a good balance between "close to work" and close to everything else (Golf and airport mostly).

I live in Arlington. There are plenty of options under 2500 a month and you will have your shortest commute here. I drive south to laurel hill golf club to hit balls. It’s about 12 miles south of where I live. Great range.

Somewhere in Virginia would be best. Arlington or Alexandria would be good options

Hi Everyone! Been too busy to check in but finally getting things settled! Found an apartment in Clarendon in Arlington. Near the Metro so huge plus. I start work on August 19th so I'll be moving in a few days before that. Would LOVE to meet up with any fellow WRXers!! Thank you all for your input!

Hey I’m also new to the area, moved here in January and have been playing most of the courses in Montgomery County. I try and get out at least 2-3 times per week, preferably early morning (630am) schedule permitting but will also play an afternoon weekend round. Around a 7 HDCP. Let me know if you’re still looking for a game.

That sounds great!! Probably won't be able to play much during the week... but I'll have to see how my work schedule goes! I'd love to get together for a round!! I'm currently a 4.9--interested to see how long that lasts...

I live out west in Bristow, just past Manassas. Cheaper and plenty of courses out west, that are of course, cheaper!
