Did acknowledge TM's thinner face and more tungsten composition. I note that the offset difference is really small: --1-2 mm and only in the 4-6i. From 7 on offset is the same between the 17 and 19 version. (I don't know if I would be able to discern this, particularly as I go down to the 5i only.)

TaylorMade changed how they measure clubs in late 2018, well after the P790 was initially released. TM now uses the USGA 60 degree ruler as opposed to their old method that almost no one else was using. This change meant that, on paper, the measured length of clubs went up by a small amount ( about 1/8") because of the different way of measuring. They then rounded up to the next quarter of an inch so that their specs weren't on eighths of an inch intervals. So the 6 iron spec changed from 37.25" on the old ruler to 37.5" on the new ruler (different method plus 1/8"). Had Rick measured the 2017 and 2019 clubs side-by-side on the same ruler, he'd have seen that there is only a 1/8" difference between the two. No one is gaining ball speed with 1/8" of extra length.

> > I don't see a 24% price increase, from a US perspective at least. The 2017 P790 released at $1299 and the 2019 model is $1399. That's a $100 increase, or 7.7%.

> > Finally, the thinner face is for more ball speed but not out of the center. It's combined with a change to the inverted cone behind the face to preserve ball speed on off-center hits and make heel and toe hits play more similar.

>

> Excellent points. And to me at least, they point toward the 19 version being more similar to the 17 version than different. I don't think that's a bad thing, BTW, and if they come out on top in my own testing, I will purchase the 19s.

100% agree. A nice refinement and smoothing off of a few rough edges. TaylorMade knows the P790 was a hit and they weren't going to rock the boat. And for the average person, a set of irons is a 4-5 year purchase. They aren't trying to win anyone over who's already playing P790.

Thad correct! Same blade lengths as the previous model.

I can imagine some of them combining these with the 760s. Perhaps in the 3-5 irons. I’m going for the full set of these. Wondering if anyone is trying these out today as they’re supposed to be on fitting racks now?

Interesting. My daughter (D1 College player) plays a blended set with 770s up to 8 iron, and 5,6,7 in the 790s with Nippon 105s. I think they've been loft adjusted for distance gapping. She produces some beautiful ball flights with the 790s. I have tried her 790s on the range several times and was very impressed with the feel as well as flight. For some reason I expected something different and less pleasing from a hollow bodied iron. I guess the foam does it's job? They don't feel like an MB blade, but they're not the least bit "clanky," and they go thru the turf as well as my irons. For ref., I'm a 1 HC and play i200s with Nippon 105x that I've been very happy with.

I'd say anyone looking for good high but flat ball flight with some extra distance in a pretty clean looking package should have these on his short list to at least demo...

i think you're right (may have been a blend with the 760s tho?) -- however, i know for a fact the head pro at T bedminster had a full set...since i fit him for them.

Here's something I found interesting. In the TM Custom Shop, with the new 2019 P790s, the KBS S Taper Lite was a no charge upgrade shaft option. Retail these are $60 shafts. When I upgraded my 718 AP2 to the original S Taper, it was $30 extra w Titleist. I was originally thinking about getting gen1 heads and putting my own shafts in. Gen 2 P790s with the S Taper Lite is almost comparable price wise.

I like the S Taper (120g stiff) but could go down in weight a little bit. Think I could go with the S Taper Lite in X-Stiff??? Should be 105 grams in a Taper Tip. Thoughts???

Not at all. The T line and 620 line are both 1399 too, so they’re just following the market.

Nice and good luck! I’ll be interested to hear what you think about them. Hopefully you’ll be able to compare them to the new T line for titleist

TM says their 7 is still at 30.5?
