Ping g400 adapter, is the plastic ferrule needed?

In theory it can act as a stress reducer for the shaft where it transitions out of the metal bore. In reality, how much that is needed or how effective it is I can't say. Ping added that after a (relatively speaking) high percentage of breakages with the g30 adapter design - that had no ferrule. Yet there are other OEM and aftermarket adapters with no ferrule that seem to do fine and not have the same problem as the g30 adapter.

But one thing I do know, is that (to me at least) it would look pretty bad staring down the shaft at address with it missing. So I'd always use it even if there was no other useful purpose than the aesthetics.

I agree with Stuart; the ferrule adds cushion in the critical transition point between the shaft and the adapter to reduce the possibility of breakage. Mishits on the heel of the club are particularly brutal on shafts so a number of OEM's use collared ferrules these days.

To be honest, the material doesn't bother me but my biggest complaint about it is the fact that it reduces the length of the glue joint - less of the shaft tip actually gets glued to the metal of the ferrule. It's probably enough for a well done installation but not a lot of room for error. For Ping adapters, I personally prefer the CMX aftermarket adapters - all metal with no ferrule and also available with a +/-1.5* adjustment range as well as the 1* version.

How much more does the CMX adapter weigh compared to the Ping?

Short insertion depth is fine if good epoxy is used. No dime store epoxy bought from a big box store regardless of stories you may read about here.

When Ping finally saw the light, they introduced the rubber ferrule on the G drivers. They found that this little thing nearly reduced warranty claims for shaft breakage at the tip, to zero. Definitely use it.
