Removing extensions from Steelfibers?

I have some steelfibers with 3/4" extensions that I want to remove. Will heating up with a heat gun damage the shafts or is it best to cut them off?

Cut them. Don't risk the other. As long as you don't plan on reextending them it will be fine.

What if... You have a graphite shaft and cut an extension down from 1" to 1/2" and are considering going back to 1" . How best to do so?

Shilgy...I've done this many times. Put the shaft in question in a clamp. Heat the butt end where the extension is. Use a pair of pillars and pull out the extension. Use a wire brush to clean the inside of the shaft and it will be ready if you wish to plug in another extension at a later date.

Removing extensions from graphite shafts can be difficult since you need to heat up the shaft enough to break the bond. (This is where the guys who use JB Weld Metal epoxy are SOL) I have had success in using my shaft puller and jury rigging a LARGE screw so that it grabs a hold of the extension (I'm assuming a plastic extension) on the inside. Apply heat and pull straight out like you would with any normal shaft. If it's a metal extension in a graphite shaft, drill a small hole through the steel exposed part and pass a rod (or a nail) through that and pull against that. Heat and pull. Takes some ingenuity, but it can be done.

ANY application of heat to the butt end of the shaft is a high risk operation. If someone ended up using a metal extension, then it can likely be done relatively safely if heated from the inside. Metal has a much higher thermal conductivity rating and that's what allows us to heat up the epoxy and break the bond before the shaft itself has a chance to break down when pulling heads (or a metal extension).

 

Leave it in if you can but if one really has to get the extension out (e.g. to install another extension), IMO the best course is to cut it off all the way down to the butt of the shaft then very carefully drill it out (or most of it) - and use a round file to finish the job and to remove the remaining parts of the extension from the ID of the shaft.

 

The ease of removal is one reason I much prefer to use these extensions when ever I need to use them in graphite.

I’ve used a tip I got off WRX with 100% success so far removing plastic extensions from graphite shafts.

 

Heat up the first 2-3” inches of a steel shaft tip and hold it inside and next to the extension for around 45 seconds, moving it in a circular motion to spread the heat. Do this a few times and pull the extension out without twisting it.

 

I use a propane torch to heat the shaft tip but never so it gets red hot and take your time.
