I went to the Monday qualifier at The Orchards Golf Club and it was a great experience. It’s interesting to watch those guys grind: 18 holes, 4 spots. Doc Redman shot a course record 62, and Austen Truslow shot an 8 under 64, playing alongside Robert Garrigus (who shot an even par round). Doc flew in the night before on a red-eye, and Truslow was in Asia just a couple of days prior.

FWIW, The Orchards, a Robert Trent Jones Jr design, is a great course/design. Certainly one of the more popular public courses in the Detroit area (45 minutes north of Detroit). It’s not a private course, so it can get beat up (relatively speaking) due to excessive play and the typical hacker forgetting to repair divots and ball marks. It was in great condition on Monday though.

It was a real treat following Truslow (-3 under yesterday at the RMC) & Garrigus for 18 holes. The chatter was entertaining (Garrigus in particular), friendly (Truslow in particular). , and the play was phenomenal. Most of the guys trying to qualify are legitimate tour players so the quality of play was equal to that of a Tour event, and arguably better in some aspects considering the lack of distractions from (e.g., drunk) spectators. Many of them are playing to pay the bills as well!

Marten Piller (-6 under yesterday/Thurs. at the RMC) drained a 20 foot put from off the green during a 5-man playoff on the 10th hole to take the final spot. Wes Homan grabbed the other spot. Fang, Kavela, and Danielson were all within 10 feet and missed their puts.

I planned on following a more well-known player(s) this weekend when attending the tournament. Hopefully Piller and Truslow will be around for the weekend, because after Monday’s experience, I will be following, and supporting, those 2 guys!

Projected cut line is already 3-under and the morning wave is just getting underway. You better shoot some scores here or you're getting smoked.

A bag of left-handed junk.

On the mention of Tom Watson, Tom shot his age yesterday at the Senior US Open. He said that every time he shoots his age, it's a "hoot."

I like DJ a lot as a golfer. Not sure he'd be high on the list of people I'd want to tell me the exciting news of what gender my baby will be.

Also, we have a Cameron Champ alert...This course might as well be a pitch and putt par 3 for him.

No wonder, he must be thinking this is really weird.

Who wants a stranger, who happens to be a celebrity, involved in their most personal moments? Very strange.

And I was just going to say that. Hopefully this good showing will carry on past this tournament, whether he's able to maintain the lead or not. We all need something to give us a boost of confidence every now and then.

I mean I know its early but wonder if Champ is gonna be one of these guys who comes in every once in a while, dumps the N02 into the injectors and blows away a field and then just disappears until he does it again.

You're probably right but its uncanny how a guy who's basically been invisible for most of this calendar year comes out like this. But you never know. Some years ago when Tommy Armour III set the 72 hole scoring record at the Texas Open someone asked him how he did it. He just shrugged and said "the ball went where I was aiming this week."

You mean, kind of like John Daly.
