Detroit has hosted two Super Bowls, countless Stanley Cup finals, the NBA finals, and more World Series than wherever you are from. And in golf, metro Detroit has hosted the US Open, the Womens' US Open, the US Amateur, the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, the US Junior Am (runner up - Ken Venturi), and the US Amateur Publinx.

If I have a harsh-sounding attitude toward you, it is because I really don't like you, from other threads where I have seen your comments and I cannot understand -- and do not like -- your appropriation of Ben Hogan's name and image.

I know the founder of Quicken Loans is from Detroit (these sponsors have way too much power) but this course is a glorified Korn Ferry track. It's no wonder Tiger boycotted this event and DJ couldn't wait to get out of there.

I'm not saying every course has to be Merion Golf Club caliber but it's just not inspiring to have these 3 events in Detroit, Minn, and the Deere back to back to back in the middle of golf season. There are so many courses not using being utilized by the tour these days, Doral and Firestone come to mind. It's no disrespect to the city of Detroit but this course and the remaining field is a bit bland.

> With that said hope to see Champ near the top of the leaderboard end of day tomorrow.

There are better courses in Michigan than probably 45 other states and it would have been really cool to see one of the best one's selected for this event, but as others have mentioned, the people behind it really wanted it to be in the city limits of Detroit.

I endorse 15th's comments.

There isn't anything wrong with this golf course that pinched fairways and a change of par wouldn't cure, which is what they will do next year. Billy Horschel even said as much before the event started.

Or, if they roll back the ball and the driver size and face, this course would play just fine as is. I think that it has a number of fine golf holes.

To further my comments. I am from Buffalo. We haven't won or hosted a Super Bowl (probably never happen). We haven't won a Stanley Cup. We only have one Donald Ross course in the area which might have hosted a US Ladies Amateur, but we also have a fine Harry Colt course that hosted a PGA in the 1930's. We have a muni that hosted the 1912 US Open, and it isn't much of a golf course anymore - but I enjoy playing it anyway. We might have the most passionate football fans in the country: see games played in blizzards.

And our beloved former owner of the Buffalo Bills hailed from Detroit. So we have that going for us. And, by the way, he left a boatload of money to be used for the improvement of our city. There were some years when we thought he was a lousy owner, but he came out pretty good in the end.

Never trash a Northern city. When the rest of the country runs out of water, and summer temperatures average 110 in your city, you'll all be wanting to move back north. We'll have to build a wall. LOL.

Well, they’re getting some of his story correct. Nate never played football. And he’s from Mitchell, NE, not Scottsbluff.

There is a very interesting side story that would involve Jim Nance.

Wife just walked in while he was walking up the fairway and commented how Nate is the spitting image of his dad. And His sister Brook looks just like Char.

This is just so cool to watch.

I beg your pardon. Firestone had some of Tigers more memorable moments. And finishes. That alone separates it from Doral.

Boring to me is yet another Dye/Nicklaus/TPC layout. After a while they all look like Applebees.

First time boys, chill. Except for one crazy exception -18 was the number. Happens lots in lesser events which this is. I spent much of the week with some co-chairs and they were pretty sure 16-18 would be the number from inception. That’s what they wanted. They can toughen it up trust me and they will for sure.

I had the same prejudice about Firestone South. I had heard that Jack Nicklaus called it "boring," and that was enough for me. Apart from college football (Go Blue), I've never disagreed with Jack so much about anything.

I've played Firestone South several times, and it's a really good golf course. It is some of the most naturally punitive bluegrass rough I've ever seen. You had better find fairways off the tee. And the green complexes are magnificent. Jack is of course correct that there aren't a whole lot of angles to choose, and it may be lacking in a bit of strategy. But it demands great golf shots. It is a great course for a Jack Nicklaus in his prime, and that's why he did so very well there.

It's a fine club with a great, friendly, professional staff. I really enjoyed playing and staying there.

Nate Ashley and Doc Redman are off to the British Open.

Redman, the 2017 US Amateur winner, has his best finish by far in his eight pro starts on the PGA Tour. He Monday qualified for this event with a 62 and is off to the 3M Open next week. He now has 344 Non Member FedEx Cup points, so he gets temporary membership and unlimited sponsors exemptions. If he can beat the point total of #125 this year, he'll get his card for 2019-2020. 344 would currently place him #109 in the standings.

It's not like the PGA Tour just gets to "pick" a course and put up some grandstands for the week.

I’m not speaking for him, but me thinks there was a TON of stuff going through his head as that last putt rolled in. The best part about this for Lashley is that the unthinkable tragedy followed him around for most of his golfing career, considering it happened when he was in college. He busted his @ss and now is a PGA Tour winner. I can’t fault the dude for not doing backflips after he sank the winning putt. So the story of his parents and he friend who perished in that accident now becomes part of Lashley’s story, not his entire story. I’m really happy for the guy (as you can probably tell).

Got to admit his overcoming his family tragedy is quiet a story; I wish the commentators didn't feel the need to bring it up so often. Savarikas brought it up again in an interview after the round, and Lashley looked really uncomfortable. It just seems gratuitous.

Wouldn't the above numbers also apply for Hovland, Wolff, etc for the rest of the season?
