Is Rickie Fowler the most overrated player on tour?

tsecor

Recommended Posts

No. Overrated suggests he's appreciated in various ways, more than others. Fowler earns his appreciation on the course and by being more popular than many other players plus he steps up when others stand mute, making him especially good for the tour and those he helps. What's disturbing is the judgment of those people that can't see the good of others over their bias.

actually, the very definition of overrated is rated or valued too highly. Appreciated doesn't factor into the mix unless a bias is included > @Pepperturbo said:

Anyone can pull a dictionary. LOL. Appreciated / Valued - one and the same. Re-read what I said and don't assume intent when it's not there.

Is this an old thread from 2009? Who's overrating Fowler in 2019? Does anyone really believe he's going to win a few majors before the end of his career? I think most of us are hoping he just wins one. It would be a shame if he didn't, especially considering how well he has played in the majors. If Fowler ends his career with no major, you might be able to make a case he was underrated.

If I had to guess, jealous and insecure people don't like what they can't compete against. Same people probably thought HS football players and cheerleaders were overrated. lol

I think he was overrated at one time, a few years ago he was a pre tournament favorite in most of the tv, web and print media. But that’s died down now, he isn’t picked as a likely winner any more and doesn’t get the hype of being a top contender as much. As far as being popular - fans love him so he will of course be featured in promotions a lot. But that just means he is popular, none of those promos tout his golf skills but rather his entertainment value.

That is correct....That's where definitions are found............ but unfortunately you didn't really mention too much about his actual golf game in regards to being overrated........but you did say this " Fowler earns his _appreciation _on the course and by being more _popular than many other players_" Popularity isn't a factor.....I assume you think he is underrated then? if not Rickie, who? DJ? Spieth? ......> @Pepperturbo said:

Can you compete against Rickie? That's amazing if you are in that category...me...not even close......the rest of that post was actually very funny. > @Pepperturbo said:

if you don't want to contribute here, there are 1000's of other threads to head to. Lets keep it on point with the subject at hand rather than attacking people. Do you have anyone else you feel fits the overrated category? > @"The General" said:

I consider the players a 5th major. No Rickie isn't over rated . I've known the kid before he became famous. He would come and play Bear Creek skins game or practice . Couldn't meet a nicer guy. Nothing phoney or plastic about him . His parents did a great job with him . What I like about him is he isn't afraid to fail that's what makes him a winner . He'll get one in the next 2 yrs. And when he does ,he'll get a few more quickly . He's top level stock. The cream will rise .

So true. very popular. I really like him and hope he wins a major someday. I think with the new rankings at # 14, I see him right about where I think he should be. He isn't a top 10 player in my eyes but hopefully he gets his major or majors...> @Titleist99 said:

TV commercials vs. actual achievements ratio-yes without a doubt.

Can I blame him? nope.

Dude has a great agent, capitalizing on his awful hair and bad taste in sportswear. :) I get it, the kids love it.

Does he have potential to be great, not just really good? sure, but he isn't exactly mentally tough under the gun.

So yes, but that doesn't mean he sucks, he's a good player, just not a great player. He has time, but something tells me his career ends up like Lee Westwood, close but no cigar in the majors.

> I don’t see his talent getting overhyped either. He is in a way sort of the male version of Anna Kournikova for golf. Meaning the women love him, he’s attractive and has a great personality, is a good guy. Plus he also appeals to the men, very like able. All of that is A+ for marketing. It’s probably been a sacrifice to his game. But as another posted said, if he can win one major, all this talk will end.

>

> If you want to talk about a guy overrated strictly for his golf, my vote goes out to Ian Poulter. But that’s a whole different discussion.

Poulter has won more than Fowler though......

I do think his likeability and marketability creep into how the media and subsequently fans rate him as a player.

For example, the golf channel guys are always picking him to contend at Majors. But how often is he actually in contention on Sunday?

Why does someone like Marc Leishman receive 10% of the discussion when his record is like 80-90% of Fowler's.

They are always telling us why Rory will win. And then another major goes and nothing. And champ. Is he even playing anymore ?

Wow!!! You really have a thing for Rory don't you? Is his wife an ex of yours or something? Rory has 16 PGA wins-13 Euro wins. 4 Majors(yes both include the majors so 25 big boy tour wins). And you think he is overrated?

Yeah but TV commercials are huge. I can't think of anyone who does better commercials than Ricky. He's kind of a natural. And that's what sponsors want. He's got a really good game too.
