Is Rickie Fowler the most overrated player on tour?

tsecor

The great thing about golf is that it is the ultimate result driven sport. In other words, you are rated exactly how you perform. so no he isn't overrated

Also, he isn't exactly always on the shortlist for Major picks, so I don't feel that he is over hyped either. as

Over exposed? Sorry, but no. He gets the exposure he deserves because he is marketable, and also keeps himself in "the mix" enough to warrant that kind of exposure.

Yes, Rickie is overrated. He's had basically the same career as Rory Sabbatini, Bill Haas with mid-single digit tour wins. Brandt Snedeker has had a better career than Rickie and gets barely recognized.

Nice guy and does a lot of stuff off the course, but I don't get the personality schtick, he looks stiff as a board when he's on the course and rarely acknowledges fans.

Very overrated player.

Where do Snedeker and Sabbatini sit right now on the OWGR or Fed Ex Cup rankings? I leave out Haas from that question becasue it's unfair to compare him due to the recent accident, but Rickie's quality of wins trump both Haas and Sabbatini. Snedeker has the Fed Ex Cup bonus of course, but he has never really been consistently at the upper part of ranking systems.

Well those guys are past their prime, genius. And their primes were every bit as good as Rickie's

The mere fact that this thread exists in the golfwrx universe means that Rickie will win the Open next month, right? Don't mind me while I'm off wagering my life savings.

Its not fair to compare a 31 year old to a 43 year old but it is fair to compare a 31 year old to a 43 year old.

Eeeh so I think sabitina at age 30 had 3 pga tour wins. Rickie with 9 at 30 so prime to prime wins 3 and 9 are not really comparable

Oooooh snarky replies. I like it. A true intellectual you must be.

Anyways back to the point. If those guys are past their prime, why compare them to a golfer who is currently rated? How can you rate a person properly if they are not current? Also I will postulate that Rickie's quality of wins trump Sabbatini's by a wide Margin. Snedeker has the Fed Ex Cup bonus but he was never consistenly in the upper part of the OWGR. And apart from the Canadian Open, his wins don't exactly stack up to TPC, Memorial and WGC.

You seem to forget how much Snedeker was talked about in his prime. But yeah middling single digit who are past their prime don’t really get talked about. Go figure > @sekrah said:

He lost that argument when he said Rory Sabatini. He could win the next 5 majors and not be popular or even rated at all.

Out of all those guys, who has the best putting stroke? My vote is Fowler.

He's an under achiever for that reason. Don't know his stats but my guess is the rough is rougher for him with that flat swing and less than imposing stature. Also his aggressive play compounds that issue, especially in majors. So the very thing that has him going quite low at times is what sinks him in the big ones. He doesn't have the muscle like Koepka or Tiger to save the errant bomb. But he cannot be as calculating as Louis O. or a Molinari because it goes against his nature to some degree. He addresses those issues, makes peace with them, he can probably do a lot better.

But how is he “overrated”?

He was hyped in the past but after not putting up the wins in the big numbers some were expecting for a while, I generally see him talked about as a very good player who gets in the mix but isn’t a big time closer. And he gets called out when he blows up a lead.

His ranking and money back up that he’s not just some poser. He can play.

If you mean he gets more marketing and fan attention than other players with the same number, I agree.

Hope would you feel about that comparison when you learned Rickie has just 5 PGA Tour wins?

Having only won five events, maybe his media/commercial hype doesn't match what he's done in his career. But he does have a PLAYERS title of those five. He just needs to string together four consecutive solid rounds in major championships.

It would be good for the game to have Fowler win more IMO. He is one of the more marketable competitors that the TOUR has since crowds and kids seem to love him. I remember going to the final round of the 2014 PGA at Valhalla and there were LOTS of people, adults and children, decked out in orange for Fowler.

A lot of people have gone dead broke betting on Rickie.

Rickie is 14th in OWGR. He belongs in the 25 to 30-1 group of golfers with guys like Matsuyama, Scott but is always bet down to 12-18 like a 5th-8th ranked because of his popularity.

Betting lines are indeed weird. Remeber when Tiger was always between 5 and 10-1 but could barely make cuts?

The dominance of Tiger in his prime has really skewed what is now considered a "good" career on the PGA Tour.

Nine professional wins being "overrated"? Please. Dude has been in the top 10 around 30% of the time when he tees it up on Tour. Been in the Tour Championship every year but one in the past decade. That's some damn fine, consistent golf in an era where the Tour is undoubtedly the toughest and deepest its ever been. Im sure he'd like to have a major, but about 135 guys playing this weekend at the Rocket Mortgage would gladly have Rickie's career to date, too.

Yeah but before this years Masters he was somewhere around 8th ranked in the world. 5-15 range in the OWGR is very volatile. All these players are so close together. 16 weeks ago, DeChambeau Rahm and Rickie were in the top 10, with Rory on the outside looking in. I wouldn't pay so close attention to the OWGR in relation to how they are handicapping the betting odds for anybody but Tiger.

Rickie has more wins than Payne Stewart had at the same age. Remains to be seen whether or not majors will follow. He’s 31 and has contended well, had it not been for P. Reed going crazy Rickie would be a a masters champion, golf gods are cruel that way.

Overrated? I don’t think so, he shows up near the top of leaderboards with high frequency.

Under-delivered? Maybe, but he sure gets a lot out of that swing while having Cory Pavin’s body. Great putting stroke.

Overexposed? Farmers sure features him in a lot of commercials and they’re on all the time. Get while the gettings good. The tour lacks personality. A tour completely dependent on corporate sponsorship and only a few players end up in ad campaigns that aren’t about golf equipment Kuchar w sketchers seems among the best, (I know it’s golf shoes, but who the hell wears sketchers golf shoes?) and I really dislike that cheapskate, tiger w Bridgestone (terrible commercials w the English dude) Rose and Watson w MasterCard, boring + boring. Probably others, but imagine the farmers commercial w the vultures w Brooks Koepka? I cant picture it. Rolex don’t count, nobody says anything. Spieth is stiff as hell in the club fitting ad. Maybe call up pat Perez, Reed, K Na, to audition. Top guys too stiff.
