Extending Shafts and Lie Angle

So typically I should play 1* upright. However, I have come to realize that I would like slightly longer irons.

My miss is typically left. Which is fine as I can play my miss pretty well or sometimes get the ball to come back to the right, but I would rather have a point and shoot approach with my irons.

 

Question is this: if I want to extend my irons +1 or even +.75 what should the respect lie adjustment be?

I don't know a canned answer for that lie angle. It probably depends on where you grip the club. It's easy to buy lie angle tape and test. I suggest you contact the OEM to check whether or not the OEM lengthened the irons and adjusted lie angles accordingly.

 

Titleist made it known 716CB was slightly lengthened to supposedly add distance. Lofts are still older numbers. I presumed stock lie angles were adjusted as well. Also, my LW, SW, and PW are cut to the same length as 9 iron, making them 1" - 1/2" long and use stock 64* OEM lie angle. I do that for better feel and the added SW.

The big factor in this is posture. Lie angle will change on posture and how close u stand to the ball/ arm hang location. Typically longer clubs will make you stand more upright therefore bringing hands up making for a more upright lie angle needed. HOWEVER, if posture doesnt change, with a long club, with arm hang the same, you are now forced to play the ball away from you more and will require a flatter lie angle.

Being 6'4" I feel like I'm reaching. The smart play here is probably to extend then figure out how to bend them?

Possibly, when going 1 inch or longer you have to be careful as striking can become an issue, if your a pretty decent ball striker you should be fine. If you feel like you are very hunched over or reaching i would try to go longer. The extra length in short irons and wedges makes a huge difference. As far as lie goes im kinda in the new school thought as you fit lie solely on ball flight, and not on lie boards or anything like that.

Lie angle is a detail here, and should be judged by using a whiteboard pen/dry erase marker we draw a strait line in the ball and align vertical against the face, forget lie boards and sole labels, they miss leads us here, dont use them.

 

But, lie angles is a detail only, because when you are into extending 3/4" or more, we have to look at what happen to swing weight or feel of head weight, so lets start with the real ISSUE...play length vs Stance and posture..

 

Ive NEVER seen a player who "needed" longer irons in the long end of the set, its in the short end we get to see it if clubs is to short, and since extension means higher SW value, we might go 3/8" between clubs, and get it all to match "better".

 

If we go the classic way, the longest club might be unplayable, but the 3/8" route gives us a option around it. You dont say if your set is 3 or 4-PW, so il make a few examples as if it was 3-PW.

 

We simply leave the #3 iron as standard, and go progressive 1/8" plus from what they are now, and ends up with a PW thats 6/8" or 0.75" above standard like this, so if 0.75 above is the need, you will have plus 0.5" from the #7 in this set up.

Head weight adjustment to "poor mans MOI match" is also very easy with this set up.

 

 

So, get a roll of lead tape, and start with the longest club in the bag.

IF a 39.00 #3 iron is extended 1.0" its equal to 6 SWP or like we added 12 grams to the club head.

 

Try that off, but at 39.00" like it is, it gives the same feel of head weight, and you will most likely NOT like it, so try off some added head weight on the club, and see ho much you can handle if any addition at all, it will tell you how to move on here. Away around that using 3/8" if 1.0" extensions is really needed in the short end, we can start from plus 1/8" on the #3 iron and thats about 2 grams plus as head weight for the club (feel of, if we extend it)

I kind of 2nd what everyone has already said. Most OEMs will adjust for length in head weight if ordered longer than standard. Mizuno uses lighter weight heads and Ping will use a lighter weight insert in the port. This will give you stock SW at the added length. If you do after the fact SW will increase so need to make sure you are comfortable with that. Lengthening does not change static lie angle but will possibly effect dynamic lie angle by approx .75 for each inch added. If you are ok with the heavier SW I would extend to desired length then use Howards dry erase marker method to see what mods need to be made to lie angle.

Extending the shafts will make the "effective lie angle" more upright. If you have a tendency to hook the ball this won't help that situation.

So you said it just doesn’t happen but then you gave an example of where it does happen? I know for 100% Ping weights heads according to length of build as well. I’m almost positive Callaway does this as well as they have heads that are stamped with H for heavy

I would only look at head relief at builds longer than 1 inch... anything one and under can be managed with certain shafts and grips.

I said MAYBE for 3-5 grams (+1/2") and Mizuno is the only company that has lighter heads but I've never seen any of the "b weight" heads in the wild. I would love to see some lightweight ping heads if you have an example. Heavy heads from tour trucks are nothing new and of course they'll throw tip weights for short builds, we're talking over length.
