I guess that would require extra bookkeeping and as it is they apparently can't keep proper track as I believe Brian Gay's wife was the one who found the discrepancy to keep Poulter on tour. They've shortened and condensed the season making it more difficult for kids coming out of college to earn enough fed ex points to make the KF finals.

What?

The playoffs now begin in early August. The kids coming out of college in June have a shorter period to earn fedex points..

Oh, you literally meant the kids coming out of college their first year...I see what you mean. I was talking about up-and-comers in general. Many of the higher ranked players seem to be playing a little less between the majors with them closer together.

Assuming you graduate & your final event is nationals/regionals and can’t play a tour event before the us open and don’t qualify for the us open

You literally have 7 events between us open and fedex playoffs to get your card under the new timeline. If you have a GREAT agent who gets you into every event you still wouldn’t even have to try to Monday into an event for extra starts off your 7. With a timeline like that , good luck. You’ll either have guys who don’t finish their senior year or make it impossible for guys with an actual card to get an exemption before the end off the season

Before this year, how often did someone in that situation earn enough points to get an exemption by the end of the season?

Not many people have gotten special temporary membership (equivalent of last years 125th fedex member ) but a lot of guys , sorry I’m way to busy trying to get there myself , have turned those exemptions into earning the equivalent of last years 200th spot on the fedex ranking making them eligible for the Korn Ferry (web) final series those getting them a KFT card or a PGA card for the next season depending on how those 4 events turn out. This is generally a route that a lot of European tour members take that have good finishes in wgc & majors so they can be card holding pga members the following season. > @HitEmTrue said:

Will be tougher this year with the KFT playoffs as there are only 3 playoff events as opposed to 4 in years past.

On paper that may actually make it easier but we’ll see . Under the old system a top 5 in any off the events got you your card. Likely now to be top 6 or 7 depending on how it all shakes out. > @grm24 said:

Jon Rahm was really the last so called 'big name' I can recall who earned his card right out of college? He had an extra month to do it as the FedEx playoffs didn't start until September.

Niemann did it last year but didn't attend college and started playing on sponsor exemptions early in the season.

If I had that kind of rare talent might just go the Niemann route.

To keep these kids in college I'd give them some incentive such as earning potential non member fed ex points in events played as an amateur..

As for the 3M it looks like Piercy had a great day yesterday. Hoping Hovland can earn a bunch of FedEx points here too.

Koepka and Day missed the cut in a weak field. Phil got old suddenly. He has hung around pretty well for the past 5 years with lots of high finishes, winning a WGC event and Pebble.

Yeah, absolutely brutal. Not sure what happened around the green as he was in a greenside bunker in 2 and then proceeded to hit his 4th shot 9 inches among other oddities. The 16 or 17 guys though that are now playing the weekend are happy about it.

I tried watching this but couldn’t stay awake. That’s probably more age related than the golf, but what I did watch wasn’t very compelling.

Will be amazing if Kopeka flips the switch at the Open and has a chance to win/wins.

Phil's results are just horrendous after the Desert Classic and win at AT&T Pebble Beach. As mentioned above, he did pretty well in the mid-to-late 40s. In addition to the two wins, he had a real shot to grab a couple more (2016 Pebble Beach and 2016 Open plus a few others).
