I find the half sets really interesting. I guess sometimes it cuts down on over thinking which club to use

What's the lowest handicap player you guys have seen who doesn't play a full set?

For me it cuts down on over thinking for just about every shot.  Most of the time with my half set I don't even look at my GPS for distances.

Nice story here about winning with 11 clubs. I think it was D, 3w, 19h, 5, 7, 9, PW, 50, 52, 58, P.

That's an awesome story - Thanks for sharing!

I'm sure that guy has some club speed which makes it even more impressive. It's one thing if you carry your Driver 220, but I'm guessing he hits it significantly further than that.

My current setup, details in my signature.  Been running a minimalist setup of 7-9 clubs for a few years now.

Maybe once or twice a year I’ll carry a full bag using by Bridgestone J40 DPCs and realize I don’t score any better with more clubs.

The Miura irons were purchased as a half set, so they’re for minimal setup only.

Classy clubs and photo.  Looks like something out of a magazine.

Thinking about going full time minimalist.  What's the chances I'll be able to sell a nearly new set of Srixon Z785 4, 6, 8, P irons?  Or is market too small to find a buyer?

I sold a set of left handed MP-53 odds last year so I don’t think the market is too small. I think I sold mine on the auction site. If you are on IG you could get in touch with lessthan14 or shortsetking and they could help you find a buyer.

Current set up 1 round in:

M4

Tour Edge Exotics cbx 5w 18°

Adams Pro a12 20° hybrid

Fourteen TB-1000: 5,7,9

SM7 50° F

SM9 58° D

Odyssey Tri Hot Triple Wide

I’m finding that 9 clubs is really the sweet spot for me. Less thinking, more fun, grab and go.

This is a great 9 club setup...

Surprised I've missed this thread.  As I toil with what I'm going to put in the main gamer bag, I still have a Ping Moonlite sitting empty and waiting for another minimalist set to be curated and put to use.  As I'm on a bit of an older iron (nothing crazy, just like 15-20 year old stuff).

I find myself wanting to put a set of 300 Forged in.  Doesn't hurt that they are weaker lofts, so going to a 56* wedge actually fits with my 8* gapping.

Getting the irons worked on, so have to remember to get some pics later.

Initial thoughts are:

TM Sim ti 14*

Adams Super LSP 20*

TM 300 Forged 4,6,8,PW

Vokey TVD 56* M

Odyssey Tank Cruiser V-Line

Is anyone here playing the tsr2+ as a driver replacement?

I'm not but I'd love to try one and see what it's like, especially off the turf (as I assume it's very good off a tee).

I spent a season with a TEE strong 3 in this role and it was fantastic.  I was basically hitting it about the same distance as my driver and it was surprisingly solid off the fairway too.  It was not specifically tee biased to my knowledge though.  Loved that club, retired it after playing on one very very wet day with spikeless shoes where I slipped and put a swing on the ball so badly it hit the very toe edge of the crown and left a big old dent in it....and the ball skittered off into the woods.

It actually hit okay after that still but it was in my head every time I had to look down at it so it got pulled from the bag.  Was a fun setup and made for a very powerful 7 club bag.

It is wild how many bags have old Adams hybrids (20 * usually) going back years up to today in this thread.  Myself included.  Ideas all the way to tour protos.....classic club.

@The bearded shanker I tried to go to a local shop and order a half set and the salesman laughed at me. I tried to explain myself and he wasn't convinced with ordering me "evens only" from an iron set.

That’s so dumb. You’re giving him YOUR money. This is why I shop online. 🤣

@WipeyFade  I told him 90% of my rounds are twilight walking 9-12 holes, I don’t need a full set.

This all lead to meeting a fantastic fitter at the rival store. I ended up with a full set of zx7s because it was a good deal and I didn’t have to order anything special, but then I just picked up a set of i230s in the classifieds. Not very minimalist of me. I will have my preference in a few weeks.

I've just started to play with a minimalist bag. Over the past year or so I have only really had 10, sometimes 11 clubs in the bag as I found myself not using certain clubs very much or in some cases, even once during a round. I figured I should be able to adapt to a reduced set no problem and I was right. I didn't score any worse than if I was using my normal clubs.

I don't currently have any pictures but will try and get some soon but below is what's in my minimalist bag.

Driver: TaylorMade R7 Superquad 10.5*.

Hybrid: Ben Hogan Edge CFT 24*

Irons: Tommy Armour 845s Silver Scot 6, 8, PW, SW

Putter: Odyssey Dual Force Rossie II (I had this since 1998)

Bag: Druids Sunday / Pencil.

As you can see, I don't exactly have modern equipment and I don't have lots of equipment either. So apart from the Tommy Armours irons and the Druids bag, all the other equipment I have mentioned is straight out of my main bag. My gaming irons are Ben Hogan Apex Plus.

It was funny when I played. I walked up to the tee box just before my tee time and there was 3 people standing there. They weren't due off until after me but were hoping to get away early so they asked if they could join me. They then started to take the mick out of my set up, well, the irons anyway. Commenting on how old they were etc. To be honest, they are in great condition and I don't think they look dated at all but anyway, I just laughed before smashing driver straight down the middle.

I 2 putted for a steady par on the first before just missing a 25 footer for eagle on the 2nd. The 3 men I was playing with were playing army golf with all their latest and greatest gear that they took great pride in telling me was all 'this years' models and after they all put their tee shots in the woods on the 3rd, I just played on by myself.

I finished 6 over par for the 18 holes which is pretty much standard golf for me.

I was recently thinking about getting some new irons but after playing with the 1988 Armours which are 2 degrees weaker than my Hogans and shooting around my usual score, it's making me wonder if there's any point?

My first matching set were 845 Armours with rifle shafts.  If someone told me I had to play only them until I die, I would say no problem, let's do it.  For oldies that would stand up forever, Armours and eye 2's are it, I play ping i200's and they are in that group of 3 best irons for maximizing my play out of probably 15 or so sets going back 35 years. I experimented a ton in the 90's and 2000s. I think it was '90 when I got my first real set, the armours.  But I could easily be stuck with anyone of those 3 sets and be happy.  My best memories are with the Armours. Absolute classic.
