How to add Width and be on Plane

Recommended Posts

Great thread.

Question for Speedster: you talk about keeping your back to the target as long as possible. I use this swing thought in my game as well. My question is, doesn’t this potentially set you up to rotate LESS on the downswing? How does one keep their back to the target while also getting their hips open at impact?

Width is something i struggle with at times and always go back to the right arm straight drill that Iteach taught me. It's amazing how far you can hit the ball with a much shorter backswing but being wider.

Width and arm structure is important no doubt

However keeping your back to the target might work as a feel for a couple of golfers but it is not what actually happens in high level swings

Lag is also a terrible concept, you do hold lag or the angle that is terrible advice

I believe the training aid has some merit but several thoughts you have presented are devastating to golfers

Well, it's working incredibly well for me. The RA2 and feedback / help from DJ has made a significant impact on my swing in a very short time. Not sure what DJ presented being 'terrible' but the improvement I'm seeing from what I've learned in this thread is real, and the opposite of what you say.

Could this be caused by a bad weight shift or other swing flaw? Like many amateurs, my downswing starts with "All Arms". When my timing is right, I can play some decent golf. When its not, its...you know. Michael Breed has said many times that if you are wide in the backswing its impossible to start down with the arms. Looks like I found something great to work on. I will look into the training aid as well.

>

> Using the Right Angle 2 set on half takes your mind off of thinking about being wide and then just grooves it for you over time. If your're bottoming out behind the ball you are probably hanging back and not using your body correctly to transfer your weight not only back, but through. Weight shift is actually pretty easy if you groove it correctly and I do this by warming up at home EVERY single day (whether I'm playing golf that day or not) with a 6 pound medicine ball that has handles on each side:

>

> This is how I train my weight shift back and through and I even make my 25 daily medicine ball swings while wearing the Right Angle 2 set on half, then I don't even think about my weight shift in the golf swing, it just happens naturally because I have it grooved using the medicine ball. Another great thing about the medicine ball is that if you relax and just support the weight of the ball and feel like you are in a balanced correct golf set up you should feel like you can stand there in your posture holding the medicine ball for hours without it hurting or putting any strain on your body, if your posture is incorrect you should feel a strain in your back. Your weight should feel like it is going straight down into the ground in line with your ankles.... if it's too far forward on your toes or even the balls of your feet your back will start to hurt. I even like to take my posture then barely hold the medicine ball on the tip of the fingers of each hand so the relaxation of my body and the weight of the ball gets my arms in the correct position before I grip the handles and start making swings with it. This helps me get my arms hanging directly down from my shoulders so they aren't too far away from my body or too close; they are just right and in perfect balance for me to start my 25 medicine ball weight shift swings.

@97speedster : Since I have one of these on the way, when you make your 25 daily medicine ball swings, do you do them in slow-motion, as-fast-as-you-can, or somewhere in-between?

I love the idea of what the training aid works on and I have not tested it personally but width in the golf swing is extremely important and something I have worked hard on in my game.

Keeping the shoulders closed in transition is one of my main arguments. It may be taught to some as a feel but it is nowhere close to what happens. Same with lag as it is mostly a 2d image phenomenon but not what happens in high level swings

For me, the feel of shoulders closed as long as possible does a couple of good things. But you’re right, on video they start opening almost the same as before - BUT the left shoulder stays low longer, my arms move away from my sternum better and plane is better. Couple that with a squat and I get to the left side better. Add a little more right tilt and I don’t early extend. Put them all together and it’s a swing that works better than my old one...

The reason this feel works is like so many I shifted laterally and my l shoulder opened and lifted a lot right away, throwing everything out of whack. So when you change something the feel may not be real but may still be necessary - and to be sure the l shoulder is pulled to open by the lower body. But it works on a different plane than before.

Its a sequence thing and while they do move, the thought of keeping them closed allows the arms to get in front, stay wide, and get the left shoulder forward and down. It also allows some separation from upper and lower body. There might be some people that don't need this, but even high level players like Justin Rose and Zach Johnson use this as a feel.

> @redraider1685 keeping the shoulders closed might not work for you, but it can help stop the shoulders from opening too soon and forcing the plane steep and over the top AND get the sequencing correct. It’s a very slight move that definitely shallows the shaft when done correctly.

> I don’t mean this in a bad way, but I’d love to see your swing so I can visualize why you might not like or need that feel in your game?

I'm betting no video is forthcoming ?
