Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round 3)

Hi Guys. I have a (hopefully) interesting, albeit specific, question for you. My wonderful wife is gifting me a nice round of golf for my upcoming birthday. As a newer golfer, I have yet to play any "nice" courses in the area. I generally spend my time hacking around the local munis. Consequently, I have no idea where to book this round and I thought you guys could help.

Some background: I've been playing for three years and still have a very high handicap. I generally shoot around 100. I really don't have much interest in getting my a** handed to me by Dubsdread or the like. I would obviously still love an interesting course that is well maintained and fun for a high handicapper. I walk my rounds if that matters. I live in the city and would like to limit the drive time to under an hour of downtown.

Where should I play?

I'd vote for Highlands of Elgin, Cantigny, or Blackstone.

Look at Harborside. Close to downtown and nice.

Harborside allows walking, but it's not a popular option. Not an easy walk, and I get a vibe that they don't really like walkers. Pretty certain there's no discount for walking.

Haborside gets a lot of publicity for being "close to the city" but it just never does it for me. Could be great, but usually is in 5/10 shape at best. Bunkers have always been messed up, greens are slow, and usually full of ball marks. I want to love Harborside because it's relatively close to the city, but I just never get the feeling 'I can't wait to be back' like I should from a course that charges what Harborside does. Side note, I think the best thing for Harborside would be some competition in the area. The old Jackson Park redesign that has been in the works for years would force Harborside to keep up. That would be a win for all golfers.

To answer the original question, I second the Cantigny love. Their three 9's are all unique and fun, can be played from a variety of tees, and would qualify for a birthday round from a price perspective. Plus it's usually in pretty good shape.

Curious, when did you play Harborside last? I used to lead the charge in griping about their crummy bunkers, but they completely renovated them a few seasons ago, and they're the best bunkers in the area now. The Better Billy Bunker system is fabulous.

Otherwise the course is much too wet due to overwatering. Having been built on a clay-capped landfill, there's not much soil and natural drainage. It may look "linksy", but it sure doesn't play firm and fast. Greens do have too many poorly repaired ballmarks, but sadly that seems to be an epidemic that's spread to most area courses. That said, I think it's a pair of courses that are worthy of an occasional round.

Absolutely a fan of the Better Billy Bunker system. Have put them in at a course I play frequently, and it should almost be the standard (albeit expensive standard). I didn't play Haborside last year, so maybe it's changed since then. Harborside is $100 for a weekend round, and in my opinion, for an extra 10-15 minute drive there are so many better courses within that distance West or even North.

It's more like $115 when you add the city amusement tax. I used to play it regularly before I retired, but now not so much. Heck, they're currently charging $70 for a weekday round, and while I'm sure the conditions are playable, they're not ideal this early in the season.

I agree it's hard to justify the price when there are cheaper options for locals. However, I think it's a great facility for a visitor, or an occasional round. I do like the isolated feel, even if one is looking out at the industrial surroundings.

Arg, you are not truly capturing the size of the skyline in your photo.

If you went and climbed the hill behind the green at the north end of the property, I'm sure the skyline would appear at least 5% bigger!

I’d second Highlands of Elgin or Bowes Creek. There’s no discount to walk Bowes but they allow it. When Thunderhawk gets around to finally opening, that’s another option. Pine Meadows is also stellar, though definitely call first to confirm they haven’t punched their greens. Blackstone is an excellent course that won’t kick your teeth in but pace can be a real issue there depending on when you tee off. Fast greens are great until guys start four putting and rounds come to a standstill.

just to clarify on Pine Meadows: as you said, always good to check if they aerated the greens.

They did just announce 2-3 weeks back that they will not punch the greens this spring

I think Pine Meadows is a good walking course and there are no houses at all bordering the golf course.

Holes 14 and 15 are really pretty when you feel like you are really tucked away in a beatiful natural setting.

My personal opinion is that Thunderhawk and Bowes Creek aren't that walker friendly and are pretty tough courses (relatively speaking).

Got 18 in at Maple Meadows yesterday.   The place is in really good condition.  The greens looked great but were rolling at a 5 on the stimp.  Took me 9 holes to stop leaving putts short.  That course is sneaky tough with some well placed fescue and the slightest amount of wind makes it a challenge.

River Pointe CC today as Bear continued his tour of NWI courses he’ll never play again once he sells out and moves to the ‘burbs. It was really firm with the lack of rain but I wasn’t able to take advantage off the tee. I hadn’t played RP in about 4 years but it hasn’t changed at all. Still cheap ($25 to walk), still sending out men’s leagues on weekends, and still with its fair share of rough edges. We dodged raindrops on a few holes but the sun came out for a bit on the back nine. 78.

played through a bit of drizzle this morning at SV. calm to light breeze - cloudy all morning.

got matched up with a fellow that turned out to be a friendly face from Sportman's.

good shots and upbeat moods the entire time.

others played Veterans Memorial this morning. they went out early, said it was quiet.

I had thought it was reserved, but obviously that has changed. anyone have a review ?

Seven Bridges yesterday morning. Got lucky with the rain and got a full round in. Traps were wet and greens were slow early. But the course was in great overall shape and it was a solid morning.

Our competition played round 2 of our season on our private course, Orchard Valley. We got very lucky with rain only making an appearance on 17 & 18. There was literally no one there and we teed off at 9:30 and were told the next group was after noon. The bunkers are in really rough shape and it doesn't seem as though they've been cared for at all this year.  The greens weren't as receptive as you'd think with the rain.  Several times, including on 12, the ball hit the middle of the green and went off the back.  Yet, they were rolling very slow and I don't ever remember seeing that many putts come up short.

Haven’t posted in a long while and hope everyone is well.

Played a few rounds already including Pine Meadow, Sunset Valley, The Preserve, and Village Links. All in much better than expected condition.

Every year seems we always have the same Big Run discussion. Glad their are others that fantasize about spending lottery winnings to purchase and sustain it.

I moved to Chicago right when Harborside opened and have a love hate relationship with the facility. They did do a nice job renovating and improving the bunkers, however, as a whole it’s no where near as nice as it was when it first opened.

I don't think the course has ever turned a profit. It's basically a money pit. Cart paths are brutal. Drainage has to be improved, but will likely never be touched.

Not sure why they don't experiment more with dynamic pricing.  The tee sheet in the late mornings and afternoons can be wide open, and yet their offering a small discount for rounds after 12 pm. Pffttt.

I can't decide what I think would be more beneficial to Harborside Golf, another good option close to the city (Jackson Park redesign) or the proposed Casino/Hotel/Entertainment facility that has been talked about for that site.

Anyone on here familiar with the latest on the Jackson Park situation? I read last week that the Obama Presidential Library is in favor of the redesign and merging of the two courses, but haven't heard anything besides that.

Like the purposed Peotone airport and the Route 53 Lake Co extension, the Tiger Woods course is another Chicago-area project that will likely never happen. Frankly, I think too much time has passed since the original announcement. It has been almost five years now.

I'm not holding my breath waiting for the Jackson Park redo. I would love to see it, but the infrastructure work is just too costly. If it ever did get built it could spell the end for Harborside. How many rounds at Harborside are visitors traveling from downtown? Now imagine them losing the majority of those rounds to Jackson Park.

What Harborside needs is a price cut for locals. My days of paying $115 to play there are pretty much over. There's just too many decent courses that are significantly cheaper.

It turned out to be a nice morning. A little damp and cool to start, but things continued to improve. I decided to mix things up today, so rather than play one of the courses in the usual rotation I decided to take a chance at Chick Evans. Yeah, I know. 'Like mixing prune juice and acetone. My wedges needed a workout, and with the short holes and tiny greens they got used. This was my second round at the course. The first visit was a weekend round in the hot summer and it was a long day on a weed infested goat track. Conditions today were much better. The fairways were shaggy, but playable. The greens looked nice, with very few ballmarks for a Monday. I guess the folks who play the course don't hit many greens. They were rolling 8 with the early morning dew, and 9 by the end of the round. No real complaints. The pace was excellent. I went off as a single, played through a foursome and twosome on the front, and sailed after that. Not much of a course, but for $27 it served its purpose. Don't think I'll be back any time soon, though.

Ha, that's funny. I played Chick Evans yesterday. My first round at Chick Evans since 2013. Played with some friends that are the definition of Covid golfers. Guys who now play golf to a lack of other entertainment options. Good course for them.

Agree with your assessment of Chick Evans. I did the same. Plotted around the course, hitting mostly hybrid off the tee. Good opportunity to work on the wedge game. Greens were decent, but couldn't buy a birdie putt. And, I had six birdie chances inside 12 feet. Just awful. I own too many putters and rotate through them way too often.
