Very chilly and almost no sun until it came out for 15 and 16. Real feel was 19° and the actual temps didn’t get above 25° until we were well off the course. Still, golf in January.

Finally getting the garage simulator up and running. Projector should be here next week. This will most definitely be the choice of activity after the kids go to bed each night. Hopefully I'll be able to make one of the online simulator leagues work as well.

I keep saying I'm going to do this and I never do.  My garage is hooked up to our central air system so it has heating in the winter, cooling in the summer with a hiigh celing. It would be a perfect location to do this.

I've been wanting to for a long while. Finally figured out what I wanted and pulled the trigger. I'm extremely happy it's about ready.

I really enjoy Game of Irons, it's probably the best simulator in the area, if not Chicago.  Other than the driver (which reads higher spin and slower club speed) it's dead on with trackman.  The owner is pretty cool to, he'll also admit to the driver numbers not being totally correct.

What you pointed out about the course you played is sojmething I noticed with a lot of courses they have.  Not sure if it's a software thing, but there's a lot of places on their mapped out courses where it's hazard right off the fairway.

I’ve found a lot of places have slow driver ball speed numbers even if they get my distance numbers correct. My ball speed with the driver is 165-170. GC2 at the PGA Tour Superstore is at least 10 MPH off. I’ll hit it 310 there and never crack 160 MPH. X-Golf is also 10 MPH off. Legends and Club Champion are closer to normal, but they can run a little hot.

Anyone ever been to the one at Geneva Commons? They have Trackman.

Makray was open today and the conditions were great.  The greens were frozen, but they must've mowed and rolled late in the year because they were tight and fast still.

I'll probably go back again tomorrow.

PGA Superstore's setup (The one in Downers) was whack last time I was there.  Not sure if they need to calibrate it or what, or they have it jacked to sell some clubs, but last time I was there I was hitting some yardages I never saw even at my longest.

Sounds perfectly calibrated to sell some clubs. Drivers don't move themselves.

The big hitting area with the GCquad (I think) has never seemed right to me. I stopped using it and started paying extra for the trackman bays, never had issue with my numbers with Trackman.

I remember the Karsten course being really stupid.  It it was also some unholy insane temp for the last six holes or so. Literally 120°. Arizona in August. Don’t recommend.

Played it before the redesign and it was one of the worst college courses I've ever played.

Lol. I played over 100 courses in Phoenix. I can safely set you up with some real "gems." You want crummy conditions with an expensive price tag, or just a really bad design?

Honestly, post a request in the southwest forum asking for the worst course possible and and you'll get some great responses. Lol.

Yeah...gonna pass on the TF look a likes!

I stand by my initial review of Tanna Farms from last Summer. It’s not awful. Yeah, the front is short but it’s also a par 34. I’d expect a front with that many 3’s to be short. It has a couple of dumb holes but you could say that about most courses and the opener is an easy 9 iron. I endorse opening a round with a green in reg even if it is an island green. MILF Creek is, in my opinion, much worse. I’d play Tanna over the Karsten Course. But I’m not a desert golf guy to begin with.

GDN today. The in-laws took our daughter for the day and my wife had a massage and facial booked so easy call for me. $40 to walk is a decent Winter price. Actually a few dollars cheaper than Highland Woods. The course was predictably wet, muddy in spots and very…uh…well-fertilized but decent overall. There were holes with literally hundreds of Canadian Geese just walking around. Like I said, well-fertilized. The greens were fine. Ball striking was solid. 9 fairways and 11 greens. Three birdies on 5, 6, and 11. Putt of the day was on 11. Had a 25 footer that was slightly redirected twice by goose turds. Dropped in for bird. 74.

Second time today over the last few weeks at Mistwood Dome. Fun times but when we spend more on food and beverages than on golf, oh boy. Aint it tough when you hit it to 6 feet and then you gotta hit that 38yrd shot (on the fly) to within 10 feet to make the birdie. Good fun though no doubt. Anyone else been there? Why does my 3 wood goes as far as my driver too?

I used to go a few times a week, it was fun, but definitely not perfect.

Went to X-Golf Algonquin. Not as fancy as the Schaumburg location, but still pretty nice inside. The simulator’s ball speed numbers were actually correct. Not many simulators are these days. The spin numbers did seem really high or really low though. It was 3500 or 500 for some reason. We played Pebble and compared to some other simulators, the greens weren’t terribly sloped. We actually made a bunch of putts for a change. Food was decent too. Friday nights are pricey.

So Links and Tees in Addison now has Top Tracer in all their bays, and raised the costs significantly to cover that.  Has anyone used their bays and in particular, if you did, how accurate would you guess their yardages are as related to your personal experiences?

I haven't been to Links & Tees, but I did use the Top Tracer bays at St. Andrews on Sunday. It was my first time using a Top Tracer bay. Overall, I found the yardages to be pretty accurate. This was especially true on my wedges and irons, which were spot on.

I found Top Tracer to be very accurate. The only tricky thing is that when you hit off mats you can sky the ball which can mess up your wedge distances. Green Valley Golf Range in Hanover Park also has it and it barely costs more than regular range balls.

Hey gang,

any recommendations for lodging near Olympia Fields during the BMW this summer?

I'd like to avoid the daily drive if possible and I thought you might know of places near the course that might be decent.

they have me down for working the week, so it makes sense to reserve early. August 15-20.

thanks in advance.

The last time I used Top Tracer at Green Valley it was $5 I think and I thought it was pretty accurate too.

All fun and games regarding the best in the west but lemme tell ya, nothing can be finer after the round than eating chicken fingers on a sunny day at Whisper Creek.
