Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round 3)

Recommended Posts

'Very nice morning at Sugar Grove Pitch 'n Putt, or as it's official known, Bliss Creek GC. My 75th round of the year. Yeah, three par 5s at 450, 464, and 449. 'Birdied two of the three. It was my first visit, and my last. No. 178 on the Chicagoland courses played list. Not a bad little practice facility at 5632 yds, but certainly nor worth the drive out there from downtown. The fairways are narrow, and the greens are small, so it's not entirely a pushover. A few quirky holes, and many that just are plain uninspiring. I was expecting much, so I wasn't disappointed. 'Reasonable value for $30. Conditions were generally good. There were a handful of bare patches in the fairways, and a few wet spots, but for the most part they were fine. Rough was cut to a decent length. Bunkers had enough sand to be playable. The greens were in very nice shape, and rolling 10 at least. I was happy about that. I went out as a single, and played through a handful of groups. 'Not going to argue about the three hour pace.

Much better day ballstriking. Even though I managed only 6/13 fairways, the misses were just off the short stuff. 14 greens led to four birdies.

I'll be out walking everybody's favorite course on Thursday, Big Run.

It’s in Rock County in Southern Wisconsin. Prairie Woods’ second hole has a really large pond about 220 yards past the tee. You need to be able to carry drives 275 to clear the water so they threw golfers a bone and made it a par 5. It’s still really dumb. They could very easily just move the tees up so it’s only a 220 yard carry and play as a par 4. It’s weird because I actually like the rest of the course. Very well maintained, a nice combo of prairie and woodlands holes, and some very snug driving holes with well placed fairway bunkers. But the decision they made regarding where to put tees and what par should be for the second hole is a head scratcher.

Played Mistwood yesterday morning and it was lovely as always. Pretty sure it’s my favorite course. Conditioning was great and greens were as tricky as ever. Go play it if you haven’t! Side note: I caught a terribly unlucky break on 13. I hit a bad tee shot (right rough) and had an angle around the trees to the green. I hit an 8i exactly as I had hoped it would go, but it landed on a sprinkler head on right fringe on the right side of the green. Took one giant bounce into the water running alongside the green and tripled the hole. Took a couple more holes for the frustration to wear off.

I'll take a good 'ol ricochet off a tree over a sprinkler head or cart path. Sprinkler heads and cart paths produce bad breaks 95% of the time.

... My brother!!! I was 2 under par going into #9 at Aguila last winter and just hit the biggest drive of my entire time in Phoenix. I am not a long hitter and #9 is 420yds, uphill and has a plateau I reach sometimes, others I don't. Wind at my back I hit a perfect drive that caught the downslope on the other side of the plateau and left me 80 yds to a middle pin. I am more of a 260-280 driver of the ball and I do not hit the ball 300 let alone 340 so I was in a position on that hole I had never been. With a good 15 mph wind with me, I had to land the ball just short of the green with my 58* and hope it stopped near the hole. Hit it right where I wanted, caught the edge of an unseen sprinkler head and bounced dead sideways into the lake. Drop is some nasty rough where the water runs off the green so could not even see my ball after the drop. I could only advance it into the bunker. Greens were hard and fast and with the helping wind my bunker shot rolled 10 feet past the hole and I just missed the putt.

... So after the biggest drive of my entire winter in the middle of the fairway, judging the wind like a meteorologist and landing the ball just short of the green with 2 shos hit perfectly, I also walked away with a triple. I can certainly share your frustration.

What a beautiful evening it was last night at Pine Meadow.

Started late afternoon and was able to walk 18 in 3.5 hours.

Nice to play a non-water logged course!

greens were running faster, which was nice, especially at PM.

It's definitely been great from a golfing perspective but from the "big lawn" home perspective it has sucked with the amount of watering I've been doing. I'm really not looking forward to the June water bill coming next week.

Played Oak Meadows yesterday. I agree with all the praise it gets on here and at $44 walking; it was a steal. Course conditions were excellent and they were the best bunkers I played out of this year. Love the little bar in the middle of the course. Sure you can nit-pick a few of the holes but overall, one of the more exciting layouts around.

The clubhouse is well underway and it will be interesting to see the pricing per round once it is done. Due to location, this could easily be a $100 course and still pack the tee sheet.

I find it odd that every time I have played, they never have the back tees in. Wonder what the reasoning is?

pace of play?

they also place the tees on 10 up a set normally to ease up on that long par 3

sidenote: as you say the bunkers are fantastic.

We tried to play last Tuesday and got blown off the course on the 9th tee by "remnants of Cristobal".

I played Balmoral Woods this morning. Plenty of roll on the fairways and the greens were running at about a 9. I think they did some tree trimming because there wasn’t anything hanging over like there usually is. Today was my first round with my new wedges. I loved my old Vokey Cold Forged but they had lost so much spin. It was nice getting everything to bite like a wedge should. Plus, having a gap wedge and not needing to either step on a 52 or dial back a PW is nice. I was the first one out and got around in 2:50. I only drove the ball okay and didn’t really take advantage of the firm conditions as much as I’d like to. However, my iron and wedge play was really sharp. I only had one birdie (hit my tee shot on 13 to 2 feet) but had plenty of looks. 73.

Fun, but exhausting day out at Big Run. This is only the 2nd time I've ever walked the course, and it's a beast. The last time I had a pushcart, and carrying is much easier. 'Went through nearly a half gallon of O2. Conditions weren't ideal, but for $40 they were acceptable. Fairways were a bit spotty in places, but playable. The rough was cut. There were a few places where some trees had shed some leaves, and finding balls was a pain. The bunkers were trash. Worse than George Dunne. The fairway bunkers had weeds growing in them. The greenside bunkers were either muddy, or hardpan. I can't recall ever walking in a bunker and hearing crunching noises. Luckily the greens were in very nice shape. A few dead spots, but otherwise very green and soft. Speed was only 8 to 9, but that seems to be the norm these days. I got lucky with the pace. The guy in the pro shop sent me off on the 10th, and after playing through a twosome on the 12th it was clear sailing on the back. On the front I played through a foursome on the 5th hole, and then followed a group in on the 9th. Overall it was a 3 hour round. 'Nice.

Excellent day ballstriking with 11 fairways and 10 greens. Only one birdie on the short par 3 7th, though. Three scrambles didn't quite get the job done, but I'll take the four over round on that course.

Glencoe tomorrow.

I was impressed when I read that you were going to walk the Big Dog today.

Nicely done.

At least 9 is an easier walk than the 18th!

Probably nice to have reversed the nines that way

Definitely! As it was 18 was a tough climb. If it had been my last hole I would have collapsed half way up. Lol. Running into the foursome on #9 also helped, as I got a chance to catch my breath while I waited on each shot. I forgot how much the second half of the 9th climbs.

@Argonne69 What the heck is up with that bunker? Jeez.
Played Sunset Valley again this morning and was surprised at how busy it was. I guess my ballstriking was on, but my putting freaking sucked. 9 GIRs and 40 putts! It was brutal. Today was the first day that I noticed the fairways have taken a beating - lots of divots all over the place. I guess it’s a sign the course gets lot of play?

I’m guessing the fine people who can’t be bothered to repair their ballmarks on the greens are the same who neglect replacing their divots in the fairway.

Lovely day out at Glencoe. A little more breeze would have been nice, but I was thankful for the one large cloud that blocked out the sun for most of the back nine. The pace was very good at 3:50. Conditions were very good as usual. Fairways were a tad shaggy, and we weren't quite getting the rollout. Greens were rolling the typical 9 or so. Rough was cut fairly low, which was nice. They continue to make progress on the cart paths. They were working on the 11th hole, although I didn't see any evidence of work on the 9th and 10th. 'No idea how they've planned it, but I expect the year to pass by before they're finished. Honestly, I'm not going to jump for joy when they're done. As a walker, I enjoy having uncrowded courses when conditions don't allow carts out.

Another solid round. Four rounds a week seems to be the sweet spot. For the first time ever I had two chip in's for birdie. 'Helped offset the four bogies.

I have nothing booked yet for Monday. It looks like we'll have a threat of t-storms each day next week, so I'll play it by ear. I'm guessing the storms will be the late afternoon variety as the temps rise.

Played Bowes Creek today. While the course looks dry, I wasn't getting any rollout on my drives. Bunkers are in great shape considering that many in Chicago are still washed out from the spring rains. Bowes has some of the juiciest rough I've seen in quite some time. Keep it in the fairway.

For those that like the Seven Bridges course, what is it that you enjoy about it?

Is it generally in better condition that most courses in the area? Most challenging holes?

Looking at it from Google Earth, it's certainly not the most natural routing, seeming like it has to squeeze into various quadrants. And I do remember some people describe the course as having a lot of "gimmicky" holes, but I have no idea if that's a fair assessment.

Right now it is in good shape. I don't think the routing is quirky. I think there is 1 hole that I'd say doesn't fit - 14. Two reasons people don't like it, it is hard and it is overpriced. For the average golfer there aren't any really easy holes that you can take a shot off and not get into trouble. I play there 3 or 4 times a week. Pros - Pretty good shape, right now is as firm and fast as I've seen it. A couple of the greens aren't taking to the heat very well and have some brown spots - this does not affect the roll at all, just the looks. It is a good challenge, it isn't boring.

Cons - Price. Tree management. There are some awful trees around tee boxes and greens that really bother me, they need to be removed. It isn't easy.

I can't think of a single hole that is gimmicky though.
