Vokey SM8

Love my SM8s

I originally went with the 54D and 60D. Love the D-grind in the 60, great on full swings and open faces. I have no issues with the bounce even on flop shots here in Phoenix. I tend to drive the clubhead down aggressively where the bounce helps me get good contact. I can play the M-grind too, but if I don't strike it perfectly when I'm trying to hit one high with an open face, it can dig more than I prefer. All depends on your technique, but even with firmer conditions out here in Phoenix, the D-grind has played very well for me. Full shots, chips, pitches, and flops, the 60-D is by far the most versatile grind for me with the 60.

On the 54* though, I changed from the 54D to the 54S. On pitches and chips, they play very similar but I didn't get along with the 54D with full-swings. It felt like it was grabbing a bit too much and my yardages were inconsistent. The D-grind has a pretty narrow sole with the 54 (compared to the D-grind 60 that I have). The 54S has proven to be just as versatile as the 54D around the greens but much better on full swings.

I'm very happy with the 54-S and 60-D. They'll be in the bag for a long-time.

I’ve just bought my first Vokey wedge and it looks lovely, hope it plays as well. Just sold my CBX2 54* as it was very clunky compared to my Callaway wedges and never felt comfortable with it.

so, my line-up is now.

Vokey 54 D

Jaws 60 Low W

MD4 64 S

The Vokey will primarily be used for shots between 50 and 85y, plus sometimes round the green and for most bunkers, that’s what I have in mind anyway.

Depending on it’s performance I may buy a high bounce 58 for the Autumn/Winter when my course gets very soggy to replace the Jaws. The Jaws is a great club but I’m a bit of a digger so when it’s soft it’s not perfect.

in your opinions, what’s the best grind for bunker shots and for soft ground?

Blimey. I went to my course today and just had a practice round, on many holes I dropped 3 balls at various lengths between 85 and 40y from the pin. This 54D was absolutely magnificent, I’ve never hit a wedge, any wedge, like I hit this today. Found the green with just about every shot, a large number of which were within 3y of the pin. Crazy good. I’m astounded.

For what’s it’s worth....

I had an outdoor / on grass Vokey grind fitting.

I would have never expected where I landed in terms of set up.

if you have the chance, do.

it’s quite an eye opener.

On the Vokey site you can find an authorized fitter. I live near one, so I had a go.

it’s one part lesson and one part fitting.

I went from 50.08F, 54.10S and 58.08M to 50.12F, 54.10S and 58.12D.

i wouldn’t have thought to go with the higher bounce gap and I for sure wouldn’t have chosen the higher bounce lob. The latter of which feels quite different and pleasant through the turf than the M did

For a driver it shipped a week after order for me recently, but I was sticking with stock components and just adjusting length and swing weight. For irons and wedges, it's more like 3 weeks to ship, provided you're not getting a component that is hard to stock

I put some sm8 in the bag today. I had some stuff to trade in and it covered 3 wedges. I got the 50 in f because it's a full swing club, 56 in s grind because i use the 56 all over the place. The s grind is very versatile where the M tends to dig on me. 60 in 12 D grind because we have fluffy bunkers and the D grind is great for flop shots.

Compared to the TaylorMade hitoe wedges, the hi toe feels much better than the sm8. They are carbon steel with nickel plating... basically like a pro platinum putter. However, i tend to miss right with them on higher lofted wedges. I suspect it is because the higher toe on the higher lofts keep the blade open a hair.

I didn't have to hit them much today. Looking forward to seeing if they live up to the hype. I'm a long time vokey player so I'm sure I'll like them.

I tried getting my iron graphics off my tour issue dynamic gold with limited success.

Ordered all my shafts from sstpure.com and they can remove the graphics as well as pure and grip the shaft for you. $75

I do believe in Puring the club but it makes you not want to do it, when the result is your looking at graphics at different angles for every single iron. Very annoying, especially on your wedge shots.

One has to go to extreme measures to get a proper set of pro clubs these days. Thank goodness for all of you and GolfWRX.

Completely agree with all of this. I, too, live in Phoenix and would never have thought the D grind would work given that I am a natural sweeper and play on firm turf. I have a SM6 M grind 60 that on paper should be a better fit, however, my technique has to be much more exact with the M grind. The D grind is so forgiving through the turf which leads to much more consistency while still being functional when I need to open it up a little.

I actually love these! Look and feel sharper and crisper. Plus the leading edge feels like it is closer to the ground (in my eye). I’m a picker / sweeper, and this is important to me

Never cared much for the SM6 and SM7 series, with the thick mass near the top. And while this might be perception, I always felt like they were more prone to skulling on chips and from bunker. Moved away to other wedges over the last few years (Ping, Miura, etc), but back to vokey with this series.

I picked up 50/54/58 set today. Hit them on the range and as perfect as can be expected. I did have them 'pured' at CC. Now I have Project X logos all over the place. This is NOT a sticker....Any advice on how to remove the paint without damaging the shaft?

FOLLOW UP: To remove the paint or anything for that matter from the steel shafts use 'Goof off'. It came off immediately.

The clubs are absolutely amazing. The flight and consistency is just unreal. So I guess you really can buy a game....
