Mizuno MP-20 - July 2019

That's why sometimes what you feel and what's real is more important to you as a player rather than what's spit out by the shaft optimizer. I like to see the data side of things. For example: I went into my local store thinking the T100 or MMC would be great for me but I ended up striking the MB irons incredibly well. Numbers we're actually more optimized for me in the MB when I thought the other irons would be a better fit. I was fit for PX but hit the DG way better. Felt better and flighted better. I still hit my yardages and shot shapes.

It’s an awesome shaft - it’s really a shame they don’t offer the 125 S+ as the 130 is a beast. In the end, it’s a VERY spinny shaft for me. I was ripping long irons backwards on course even with the 130x. If you need launch/spin help it’s a good option.

After a good 20+ rounds with my MP-20 SELs, I must say i absolutely LOVE these irons!!!! In fact, I am way more consistent with them than the ones they replace (Titleist T-200), which again I must attribute to the reduced size, which in my case helps me focus better and hit the center of the club consistently (vs a lot of toe shots with T-200 and bigger irons for some odd reason). In summary, I make more greens, I can shape this so easy with my natural draw and the distances are pretty much the same as with the T-200. I cant wait to see what Mizuno brings out next for us lefties!!! I am a Mizuno Fan for life now!

About a month or two in and I mean, I doubt I'll ever play any irons besides Mizuno. You'd have thought I learned my lesson back in the day.

Enough that it would make no sense to play the Hogans over the 20s. I played Hogan Apex irons in the early 2000s before switching to Mizuno MP-62 and that was a big leap forward. The 62s were slight cavity backs but thin sole and top line. The 20s are even better, IMO, despite being a muscle back. They have a little distance pop that I don't get from other blades, and they are very forgiving for an MB.

I'm feeling the same way. From the time I sold my MP-62s until now (MP-20s), I've bagged at least eight sets of irons: Callaway X, Ping S-59, Ping iBlade, Ping Ei1, Ping G, Mizuno MP-18 SC (loved but didn't get right shaft), Cobra Forged One, TaylorMade P790 and probably others I can't recall. I'm back to Mizuno MPs. Hopefully here to stay.

Really considering switching from my basically new Srixon 785 to a MB 7-PW/HMB 4-6 combo. These things just look so darn good and I love me some blade action. Decisions decisions!

Mizuno does have quality gear in the irons department. I played my 2019 Cobra King Forged MB's from July thru the end of the season last year, loved everything about them, figured going forward they'd be the ones to game. Until I tested out a Mizuno MP-20 MB 7i demo club with DG S300 in it.. a few more testing sessions and a week later I had a set of the MP-20 MB's. Since winter is here now I can only hit them on the sim or at a local golf dome, but I'm liking everything about them so far.
By the way, during my golf dome trip last weekend I did get a chance to test out the P7TW demo 7i and the Wilson Staff Blade.. @balls_deep thoughts on those is spot on.. they are as nice as anything, and knowing he's gamed Cobra MB's then MP-20's and now the Wilson Staff blades.. I made sure I didn't hit too many shots with them..

Has anyone put the HMB's up against the Hot Metal Pros? Which did you feel was more forgiving? Im guessing the feel/looks department would go to the HMB, but might get a bit better performance from the Hot Metal Pro?

Wondering the same thing. Have 5-PW in JPX 919F and looking for a traditional 4 iron and possibly a 3 iron to kick out my hybrids. Can get HMP single irons for fairly cheap, but wondering if its worth it to go HMB.

And sorry if this is a double post.

The feedback on all the shaft options has been helpful. I don’t have occasion to swap shafts and experiment. The MP-20 are on my wish list. My current clubs have Modus shafts. I’ve noticed more dispersion and ballooning than previous sets (always DG).

I’ve tried the shaft optimizer at a couple shops. One shop handed me the club and said swing away. Every recommendation was an X shaft. The other shop told me to grip according to my standard shaft length (-.5, std, +.5, +1, etc.). I gripped down. It recommended S shafts.

Meaning no disrespect, but are fitters failing to point this out?

Everyone seems to say the Mizuno optimizer basically puts all testers in an X flex, so I wouldn't put too much stock in it until they can work out the kinks. As for the Modus shafts, FWIW, I had the opposite experience in the MP-20 -- the DG and PX-LZ shafts both spun more for me than Modus 120.

Agree. It's fits on the stiff side. I don't think it takes into account swing faults such as adding too much dynamic loft and tries to get launch down with X flex. The one thing it does do is point to profiles that will likely work well for your swing. I'm playing C Taper 125 S+ now (it recommended C Taper X). This was not a shaft that I considered prior to using the optimizer and I absolutely love it. I would go down a flex from what it says.

I am not a great ball striking by any stretch of the imagination, but I hit these clubs and totally feel in love. It was probably the move to a lighter shaft that did more than anything, but I hit the MB 20 with Modus Tour 105 gram stiff shaft and hit the ball unlike anything I have ever hit before. Technically I may have had more distance with 745s with PX LZs, but I also had more unwanted hooks.

Maybe the weight of the head and shaft combo just totally fit my swing.

Once I get some money cleared up, and I am debating going 4-PW in the MP20 or maybe doing the 4/5 in the MMC. I am still unsure. Swinging the MP20 just felt so perfectly natural, I should just take it down to the 4 iron.

I've had my irons (MMC - $ Taper 120) for almost a week now and after a couple range sessions I finally was able to sneak in 9 holes late yesterday. General impressions....... feel is amazing, turf interaction is fantastic. They are also more forgiving than I expected. Coming from 900 forged, which I bent 1 degree weak, I'm still losing about 1/2 club of distance. The trade off is that I've gained a little bit of launch and spin. With the 900 forged, I tended to be on the low side of spin and while it was fine out of the fairways, rough was a different story. I'm going to try to get out today and have the lofts and lies checked as I think a couple of irons are off, but other than that, really good.

Prettier than my JPX 919 Forged irons, but I haven't hit an iron that looked like that in over forty years.

I hit blades when I couldn't play at all, though, so I wonder how I'd hit them now.

I assume most players got away from them for a reason.

Whether for me or not, though, that's what a golf club was meant to look like.

I have always played the Nippon Modus 120X on the Mp20 with the Modus 120s. Love the clubs wish I would have ordered the 120X really like those shafts.
