Mizuno MP-20 HMB - July 2019

Recommended Posts

I played the 900 forged for a couple of years and just got my HMB set this week. I think they are just as forgiving as the 900s were. If you look on the Mizuno Europe site they have detailed measurements of each iron and the HMB are about the same size as the 919F. The blade length may even be fractionally longer on the HMB if I recall correctly.

Finally received my HMBs this week. Ordered them on 9/14. Lots to say about these things; frankly I think they're a game changer for a lot of players.

Background - 1 index, lifelong blade player. 116 swing speed, miss tends to be on the toe side. Coming from MP18s (blades) with a FliHi 3 iron. Previous to the 18s were 33s and 32s. Used to think the 32s were the best blade ever made, whatever that's worth. Loved the 18s, not the FliHi however. That club just never worked well for me, clunky and dead feeling. Ordered the complete HMB set but was originally going to mix it with with the blades. Figured I'd try the whole set, cuz why not? Getting older and wanted something a little forgiving as an experiment. Firstly, these are not big, phat, or swollen. They look like a player's iron at address. Those comments about the topline are inaccurate for me. They set up beautifully and I have no issues coming from the 18 blades. More importantly, the sweet spot feels absolutely massive across all clubs. My slight toe miss feels like a sweet spot hit and there is little loss of distance. The feel off the face (to me) is way softer than the MP18s. I know that may seem odd to others, but I swear the feel is absolutely butter. Could be somewhat due to the shafts - I'm an X100 guy for 30 years and on this set I got PX LZ 6.5s. I use the old handcrafted LZ graphite in my driver and have always loved that stable, but loading feel, and thought I'd try them in these clubs. Wow is all I can say. This set up is as good as I've ever owned.

Looks - they look like blades. Yes, maybe on steroids, but blades. Compact, low offset, clean

Distance - 7-PW are exactly the same as my MP18s. Maybe a yard or two farther. 3-6 irons are a half club or so longer. But wayyyy more forgiving. I honestly feel like I can't miss a shot with these clubs.

Feel - soft. Better than the MP18 blades by quite a bit. Maybe because every shot feels solid, who knows. Or the shafts play a part. Either way, the feel is beyond outstanding

The other thing that was surprising was how workable these clubs are. There is no drop off, "game improvement" type compromise here. They play like blades with massive sweet spots. How cool is that? One round in and a 2 hour range session so far. Maybe my opinion will change. But as of today, they are the best clubs and best set up I've ever played with. Massive kudos to Mizzy for doing an amazing, and surprising job.

Now this is a statement that will make me undertake some serious full HMB bag considerations when I do my fitting on Monday!

I just got my MP-20 Hmb 2 iron with a KBS S taper. So far it has been easy to hit off the deck ( as much as 16-degree iron can be) and very solid from the tee box. I previously have tried the 2017 P790 UDI, Srixon U-85, and GAPR low. So far the HMB has been the best of them. It has just enough offset to think you can hit it. Looks and feel are top-notch. Wishing I had ordered a whole set.

I ordered the same setup almost 2 weeks ago and haven't received mine. When did you order?

Please update us on which KBS shaft you ordered. Really hoping its not the Black PVD $-Taper, thats what I ordered in the 130X, placed my order on 9/20. Maybe I need to give my fitter a call today and see what he can find out.

Also as of today, all 3 models are still unavailble to order via Mizuno's website, and the MB's are now listed as out of stock!

Tried them against my z765s at the range this morning, along with the KBS Tour 120 shafts recommended to me after a recent fitting. I currently play the Tour V.

The HMBs are on the left. Face on pics have the HMB at the bottom. Yeah yeah, my club is dirty! They look very similar and quite honestly felt the same. Flight, distance, feel, forgiveness no different to me. The Srixons will remain in the bag.

I had mine bent to SEL lofts in 4-pw and my 2 iron is bent to 18*. So far so good. I had a rough round yesterday but it was early and cold. That’s what I’m blaming anyway. ?

Sounds like a good way to go! guessing offset and bounce impact was minimal.

Basically just weakening the 5-9 irons 1 to 2 deg. It does take a bit of offset out which is perfect for me.

I ordered mine 9/20 and received 10/4. Sounds like they are starting to catch up

Heard back from mizuno this morning, my order is being finished up today and shipping out today, was told it should arrive wednesday. One minor hiccup, the HMB 4 iron is back ordered and will not be shipped, was not given a timeframe on when it will be back in stock. So I will be getting a 3,5,6 HMB and 7-PW along with 51,56,62 T20 wedges. My order was placed on 9/20

Yup, going to do the same thing, I noticed there was an option in the Mizuno PFS app to just select traditional lofts, this aligns with what you did.

So I just selected it and printed it out for ordering.

Private seller after they didn’t “fit” his game after 3 rounds. His loss, my gain!
