Mizuno MP-20 HMB - July 2019

I have the HMB 4 and 5 in a combo set. Love em. I really think Mizuno needs to do a better job at marketing what the HMB is exactly. I am pretty sure it is not a "Player's Distance" iron like the P790 or i500. It is more of a normal Mizuno MP club with a touch of added launch and forgiveness while retaining a good look and feel. Most people are expecting these to be rocket launchers like the P790 and i500 when they are not meant to play in that category, that is what the Hot Metal Pro's are for. Many people are just going to hit them side by side and pick the one that goes further which isn't really the point of the HMB. It's for someone that wants to play an MP club and hit normal distances but needs a little launch and forgiveness.

The HMB and HMP have never been billed as player’s distance clubs by Mizuno. One look at the club’s product page tells Mizuno’s intent for the irons. Mizuno can’t combat consumers’ lack of product knowledge or how a consumer makes their decisions. They just have to focus on making high quality clubs that offer great looks, balanced playability and value.

sold my HMBs... they are not blades with hollow tech.. they are cavity backs with hollow tech masking as blades. Chunky, clunky and my iron play has been terrible since i got them.. thought it was me...

pulled out my old nike blades after 3 months of working the HMBs...and kaboommmm baby. ;)

This may not be true for everyone but I agree with it. I honestly wasn’t impresses by anything with the HMB’s as a set. The idea of Mizuno buttery feel nosy have been for generations ago, the MP32 will live in my memory as a fantastic set but they are pure blades. I feel like the MMC and HMB just didn’t do anything for me performance wise and especially feel wise. To each their own of course.

it works well with full swings..all out,. but cannot hit partial shots, soft shaped shots...comes up way short and dead dud feel. Things you can do with a crappy blade you just cannot do with the expensive HMBs.

If you are coming from cavity backs..i think this is your nirvana. I have learned my lesson. Blades for ever.

I disagree. I find the MMC’s to feel much better than the HMB’s.

MMC’s have a Mizuno forged feel with some forgiveness, but certainly not the feel of a Mizuno blade.

Still a great feeling club.

Different people are going to be able to do different things with different irons. I came from MP 15's, which I absolutely loved and were the 2nd best irons I've ever had, to the HMB's and I can hit more shots with them than I ever could with the MP 15's. Draw it, cut it, partial, flight it down. I absolutely love them. I'm a high single digit handicapper and these are the best irons I have ever had, bar none.

Agree with the comments above. The MMCs are a terrific club. So solid and a joy to hit. I only have my 5 iron in the HMB but it's also a delight to hit and relatively easy to flight if required. When pured the ball melts off the face. Very happy with my recent acquisition.

my point exactly..folks coming from cavity backs..this is a dream head... former blade players....possible hell. too clunky, sole's too wide, leading edge too blunt. I have struggled with cavity backs all my life whenever i have tried them..

I agree with this. The co-forging of the MMC works well and the clubs feel good. And they perform very well. People knocked the MP59 — really liked those. The outlier is the HMB, which is really a big cavity back covered by steel. There is nothing blade-like about it. The MMC is sleek like a sports car. The HMB is a mini-van.

I was checking out the HMBs in GG yesterday and comparing to the JPX919F. The HMBs have a much thinner sole with a very nice trailing edge bevel. Same blade length and loft specs as the 919F. If I had tried those in my fitting, I’m sure I’d have bought the HMBs.... they are MUCH prettier and sexy than the 919F. I love my 919’s though, just wish I had seen/hit the HMBs in my fitting.

Oh well.

People are crazy to compare these to a cavity back. I’m a 5.2 and usually play down to a 2 or 3 when I can get out more. Hit 2,3,4,7, and P on the launch monitor and was able to work them easily and were a little over 1/2 club longer than my jpx850 forged(which I love). They are not a ton different than the jpx line in thickness but just look great and are slightly more forgiving. The long irons are probably the easiest I’ve ever swung in a more players iron. I’ve never bagged cavity backs and have bagged several mp and jpx sets and these just feel like a great mix of forgiving like the jpx but more workable like the MPs. Read all 33 pages of this thread and was debating the combo set but after hitting these, I’ll probably go full set of hmb or maybe just mp in the pw. The most excited I think I’ve ever been for an iron set. Talking to the Mizuno rep. and he said they’re for 0-15 handicappers and after hitting them, I’m buying that.

I’m really wondering if I quit on these too soon, played one round and didn’t love them but starting to rethink. I am currently gaming P790’s and love the distance but 9 and PW are worthless on less than full swings. Long irons are hit and miss, when my swing is on they are great but when it’s off it’s just low spin bullets. Kinda thinking these or the T100.S since loft is comparable. Anyone have any advice on relative forgiveness?

I wanted to love the P790s but just didn’t love how the short irons felt and looked. I’ve seen some low handicappers play them and play them well. I think it’s all preference but unless you’re playing a ton and close to a + handicap, there’s not a need to play straight blades. I have a toddler and don’t get out as much as I used to and don’t mind the forgiveness combined with the ability to work the ball. If you’re a 10 handicap and hitting straight blades, you might benefit from something that offers you a little forgiveness if you’re a fraction of an inch off when striking it vs losing 50 yds and coming up way short IMO. To each their own but love this new category and am pumped to order some HMBs this spring.

I’m in the same boat with a toddler too, spent last season playing mostly when I could sneak out and never practiced. Would you say the T100 are straight blades now? I played AP2 forever but never knew what I was missing by not branching out. Never had much problem with AP2’s but realized I missed short a lot. Play to a 5 handicap but it’s 75 or 85 for me it seems. I think I will give the HMBs another try as they definitely offer more finesse than the P790’s.

2nd swing if you want to do it all online and pay full retail, Discount Dans if you don’t mind a few emails back and forth for price quotes and specs, well worth the savings though.

Did you try the MP20? I made the mistake of buying the 4,5 HMB for the top of my set. They look cosmetically the same as the blades from the back, but not at all the same from address. The don't feel solid either and I'm not fond of the turf interaction. I had the MP18 MMC 6-P, Fli HI 4,5 and I think I liked the Fli Hi better than the HMB. Regardless, they made the MP20 MMC look much better this time around and blends much better with the blade. I'm taking back the HMB and getting a 4,5 MMC for the top of my set.

Bit the bullet and decided to upgrade from my JPX 900T

combi set of HMB and MMC MP20 incoming

Went 5 and 6 in the HMB and 7-PW in the MMC.

In truth i could probably game either full HMB or MMC but think the above is a smart combo, bit of extra help in the long irons and transitions nicely into the scoring irons.

Off an 11 index im sure some would argue the MMC are too much club but you also have to like what your looking down on and the feel is better than the JPX's i have IMO

I know there is likely to be a newer JPX920 released soon but I at least feel have best of both worlds with the 900T's going into the back up bag.

Interestingly having a shaft change going back to a TT shaft rather than the KBS ctaper.

Will post a bit of feedback on them when they arrive and ive had them in play a little
