Husband & Wife Championships...

Recommended Posts

If you’ve ever played in a Husband & Wife Championship, what was the format? What would you suggest for such a tournament?

Currently my club uses a 100% handicap, both net scores count for the team total. I think it’s a brutal format. What do y’all think?

What’s brutal about that format?

Our club has one and it always turns into a joke. It's over 2 days and it's best ball net.

So what generally happens is a 36 handicap woman shoots a 92 for a net 55 one or both days and they win by 10+ shots. My wife and I are both 0's and we'll shoot 64-66 or so gross/net to come in last place. It's a fun weekend...

Tournaments like this where they can be wide gaps in abilities (parent/child is another example) should be aggregate in my opinion.

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word brutal. The main issue I have with ours is that the same couple always wins and it's because their handicaps are both B.S. They were the only two to both shoot under (net) par and won in a landslide. That and we only had 5 couples play.

What formats would be more equitable or what would be a good way to suggest a format change to up participation and make the competition more fair for all players involved.

I’ll tell you what really doesn’t work, our club had a husband-wife alternate shot tournament on Valentine’s Day. A real marriage test, that one. They didn’t have it the next year and one old guy told me he’d had more fun in Vietnam.

You can’t fix the sandbagging issue, but I’d think that more marketing to the women’s club might increase participation. Get them interested and the guys will play whether they want to or not. Women don’t play as many tournaments as men, maybe bill it as more of an outing than a competition for awhile and see if numbers move up.

This surprising to me. If we play in a tournament it is usually a Chapman. We both tee off, hit each other’s drives, pick the best shot, and then alternate in from there.

We have a great time, and our handicaps are disparate 6/40. We wouldn’t play if both players had to play their own golf balls all day.

In our actual Couple's Club Championship, a 2 day event, we play a net best best ball with full handicap. However, you must count 9 scores from each player. Used to play a straight net ball but the higher handicap won more times than not.

Our favorite couple's event is what we call a Shifty Scramble. If you make birdie or better, both players move back a tee box. If you make bogey or worse, both players move up a tee box. Our course has 4 sets of tee boxes and, for this tournament, they add a fifth tee box way, way in front of the most forward tees. It is played as gross score tournament with no handicaps. Here is the amazing thing. The score from first place to last place is rarely more than 6 shots and that is with 20+ couples playing. This is annually our biggest field of all our couples's tournament and is everyone's favorite tournament of the year. Including the club championship.

We do monthly "Jack and Jill" tournaments at my club using this format. The same sandbagging couple wins most of them, but the rest of the field is a pretty tight grouping. It's a fun format.
