“Non-boardy” x stiff driver shaft

Recommended Posts

Anyone have recommendations for a “non-boardy” x-stiff driver shaft? Over the years, I’ve gone between x-stiff and stiff driver shafts (was just fitted for kbs tour x stiff in irons) in my driver. I have a pretty fast swing tempo and speed. However, for whatever reason, I tend to over swing and can’t get as consistent results with the x stiff shafts that are typically stock in whatever driver I have used. I have better results with a stiff shaft because mentally I don’t feel like I need to swing as hard. That said, the stiff shafts tend to spin far too much and too high. Thus, I am looking for something that lowers ball flight and spin but doesn’t feel like I’m swinging a board. I also don’t like super heavy shafts. I realize I can go get fit but was thinking someone may have some potential ideas. Thanks for responses.

Diamana blue anything is a winner when it comes to a smooth feeling driver shaft. White if you want slightly stiffer.

I fit very closely to this discription and really like the Oban Kiyoshi Gold. I’m also enjoying the Matrix Maru Red TX. Both play softer to flex in my opinion. BB

Feel is very subjective, but I find the Project X Hzrdus to be boardy, that's not to say it doesn't provide great results for me. On the other end of the spectrum I thought the Fuji Speeder 661 was quite smooth. Also great results but a markedly different "feel".

Agree with the Diamana DF, BF, RF. Would also throw the Fujikura Ventus in this category.

For shafts with a smooth profile, Aldila Tour Blue, Aldila Rogue Black, Diamana BF, S+, S+ LTD, Kai'li, or OG Blueboard, Aldila VS Proto, Project X HZRDUS Yellow, Tensei Pro Blue, Aldila RIP Phenom, Fujikura ATMOS Blue Tour Spec. There's no shortage of shafts that are known to be smooth in terms of feel. As for stiffness, some of them are weight dependent (i.e. as mentioned previously, the shaft flex gets a little firmer when moving from one weight class to the next, so a 70 X will be a little firmer than a 60 X for example). Good luck in your hoing.

Check out the EI bend profiles of various shafts and you will be able to narrow your search down. I find a shaft that has more flex to it in the middle or upper middle will have more “feel” to it and won’t feel overly stiff. Graphite design tour AD DI, TP, IZ have great feel to them, Fujikura Ventus, Atmos tour spec Blue, Mitsubishi Diamana BF,RF, Tensei Pro Blue are just some examples that I have hit that all have more feel to them.

I just put mine back in play. It's good, but from a feel standpoint, I think a Blueboard still beats it out.

I thought white was both smoother and more stout than blue. Really was the gold standard when it came out. Can probably be found at a very low cost these days.

Also another vote for motore TS. Do a nice job of playing low torque without losing "feel" imo

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
