Best courses in the Ayrshire area.

So much good info in this old thread so please go back and read it all.  Not wanting to repeat a lot of what I said, but don't overlook West Kilbride as a nice, easy to walk layout with some interesting holes and really great views across the course and across the water if that is part of the attraction.  Friendly place and nice experience.

Sunday: Turnberry Ailsa, Prestwick

Monday: Troon Portland, Troon Old Course

 

Staying at Marine Hotel across the street from Troon.  Looking forward to enjoying the whisky and golf!

Going back and forth between playing WG on one day, then 36 split between Turnberry/Prestwick.  Or playing Turnberry one day and Prestwick the other, and skipping Western Gailes.  Trying to play Turnberry in late morning, then rushing over to catch PM round at Prestwick is a challenge. 

I wouldn’t rush Turnberry or Prestwick, both are definitely worth taking it all in. The clubhouse alone at Prestwick is great especially if you are a historian of the game. I would think by July WG will be fine.

Hey Gents, 

Spending 3 nights at the Dundonald Lodges here in a few weeks.   Playing Dundonald, Royal Troon, Prestwick, and Trump Turnberry.   For anyone familiar with the area,  what would the commute be like between Dundonald and the nearest area with pubs/restaurants?   Are taxi's easy to come by out there for a trip into say Troon for dinner and drinks?   Thanks for any input!

You are basically about the length of a golf course or two away. We didn't find cabs easy, but have your accommodations call for you. They aren't just sitting around in my experience but can be had. Each little town has all kinds of options. Try to book the best ones you hear about days in advance or they seem to be unavailable for walk ups. We ended up at Scotts and Lido (think they may be owned by the same group) while we were in Troon. Book Scotts a week in advance though.
