2019 LPGA Q-School

Historically how many returning pros make it over first time entrants?

 

I would think being there before would be a big advantage. Knowing how to prepare, pace yourself, or even things like eating or sleeping patterns. An 8 day event is rare, so having done it before is a big plus.

 

Last years batch of ams doing well is probably an exception rather than the norm.

Not sure this means she isn’t representing Phillipines or renounced her citizenship. Often, the players will list place of residence rather than country represented and I think whoever is programming the scoreboard goes by that. At the Senior LPGA Chps last week Patricia Meunier LeBouc had an American flag next to her name until the third round when it was changed to a French Flag. Youngin Chun had an American flag next to her name yesterday as well.

Clariss Guce is back to the flag of the Philippines.

Alison Lee's raw talent is unmatched; she's +3 for the day but birdied holes #4-6 to erase all sins.

It'll always be a "what if" for Alison. Would she be one of the all time greats if her mind was into it?

I had high hope for Kristen Gillman at LPGA this year; she won 2 US Women's Amateur, won a JLPGA event as an amateur and she went through Stage II and Q-Series with an air of sureness.

Can't say the same about this year's college corp;

Jennifer Chang, Albane Valenzuela, Andrea Lee and Haley Moore

all seem to be steady hands, but no sparks as yet.

Of the many LPGA veterans in the field; Emma Talley, no doubt is the standout. She earned $421,287 in 2018, #52 in official money, her rookie season.

I don't know why she fell down to #104 this season, but her talent is there.

She showed it in 3rd round, with a tidy -5, to move to near the top.

There is little doubt this year's Q-Series field has been better than last year.

While finishing 1st is nice, it doesn't get one much other than a slightly bigger paycheck. I think the players are playing smart and avoiding blow up holes. I think we'll see some taking chances during the final round or two once they've secured a spot in the top 45.

Top-5 is important; in order to guarantee entry spots for first 2020 full field events; Vic and Australian Open.

Of course; nothing is more important than Top-45 and ties.

Nice rounds by Yealimi and Muni. Yealimi shot -5 today, and currently holds the lead. Muni with a -4 round good for T3. Hee Young is T12, and Yui is T16.

 

Sierra needs to right the ship. A +2 round today puts her at T72.

Yealimi Noh mentioned travel and jetlag were big issues for her during Q-School Stage II ten days ago:

 

“I usually think I'm pretty good with jet lag and adjust pretty fast, but going from west to east coast kind of messed me up,” Noh said. “When I got back from Asia, I was okay at home then coming over here for another time change was hard. Also, having even more pressure of Q-School and Stage II was probably the hardest thing I’ve done all year. It helped me learn a lot for travel and how to adjust, stuff like that.”

I'm surprised we didn't receive more information on her struggles during this season. Maybe because Judy, one of her biggest advocates, wasn't on air as much this year. This is just a personal observation, it may be a completely wrong observation, but I've wondered if Emma may need to work on her golf fitness a bit more. During her rookie season she always seemed to look exhausted and even beat up after a round. In good spirits for sure, but it always seemed like the course exacted its toll on her and playing any additional golf that day would have been out of the question.

I'm not sure about all-time great, but I believe she was much higher ranked/potential than any random college player coming out on tour. Her game was pretty good in 2015 for a rookie, actually not that far behind Minjee. But since then they have obviously diverged quite a bit.

I know Alison can play the game, but being a highly ranked college player means nothing unless you can make the crossover to the bigs a success also. Take Amanda Blumenhurst as a perfect example:

Amanda earned all those accolades and in 4 full years on LPGA managed only 4 top 10's. It's such a different animal on the LPGA it's hardly fair to compare or assume how great a college player should be or will be. Leona Maguire comes to mind as well, we'll get to see her on the LPGA next year.
