Try taking your set-up over the ball and then stepping back a little. You may be standing too close to the ball.

Yeah, the fitter at CC said standard length was right for me.

So last night, I hopped on the monitor and what I thought were toe strikes were actualy heel strikes! lol. I'm a mess.

I swear, part of me feels ever since getting the launch monitor, my swing has become so inconsistent as I am trying too many things. Wish I could find an instructor near me as I think online lessons just don't work for me.

Back to the drawing board. LOL

1/2” is a big change. It’s an adjustment you are fighting. Give it a little time or go back to what your previous specs were.

To each their own but in my opinion if I was shooting between 90-100 there is no way I'd be playing Apex irons. They are players irons with a little forgiveness, not game improvement irons which is what would benefit a guy that shoots those kind of scores.

And it goes without saying that people desiring to improve should work on their swing. That's not the point though; this thread is about, or should be about, golf clubs, not the golf swing since the thread is in the Equipment forum.

This!! It’s hard to find irons any more forgiving than the Apex. I mean any club if you hit it way out on the toe is not going to perform. The Apex CF16 (and I assume the 19) were very forgiving for low on the face strikes which are common. They’re low spin irons but forgiveness shouldn’t be a huge issue.

Anyone game Apex's who can compare from similar types of clubs as my Mizuno's?

I don't think you'll find the CF16 more forgiving than the 850F. My brother in law has the black CF16 and I have the 850F. The blade length on his Apex look smaller than my 850s. I don't put much stock in the Maltby MPF scoring, either, but it does have some useful measurements and the MOI on the CF16 is also lower than the 850F.

Thanks for the feedback thus far.

Shot 87 on Bethpage Red yesterday. Hit almost every fairway with driver but more importantly, was striking my irons really well.

I think once I got it in my head that my swing was off and was shanking shots, immediately, I thought of the Maltby MPF ratings which has the Apex irons at

“476 - Conventional”.

You lowered your swing weight considerably over the old set. Half inch makes a huge difference. Add some lead tape to your 7 iron until it feels right, probably about 3 inches worth. If it makes a positive difference, then add to the other clubs as well.

I'm going to be nasty to you now: B) What did you expect? It is Callaway "Apex" - not Hogans. Callaway is famous for wood/forestry tools, not blade irons.

  • 5 months later...

Judging by the heel strikes being so consistent... i think your standing just a little bit to close to the ball. Try moving back a half inch or inch maybe even a bit more until those strikes are more centered. Im getting fit this spring for apex 19s... i shoot anywhere from 80 to a 95 with most rounds being mid to high 80s. I think i can handle the standard apex 19s coming from a bit bigger irons all my golf life like steelhead pro nike vapor etc... should be ok if not better being fit and i tend to like smaller headed clubs.

My thoughts exactly. Even Tiger says go get fitted first then practice. His word is GOLD!

Nessim non-withstanding, two great ways to stop hitting it off the toe you can see in pros on youtube:

Address the ball in the heel. Vijay Singh did this his entire career.Increase your spine angle (torso bends toward the ball) during downswing. Koepka does this every time he swings to avoid sideswiping it.

All a toe hit means is that your left shoulder is further away from the ball at impact than it was at address, assuming you are addressing int he center. Another good thought is to feel like you make a closed, rather than level, hip slide / weight shift to the target, keeping the left shoulder closer to the target line longer.

Don't try to fix it with equipment or your hands. It doesn't work. That said, Ping makes some great irons (like the old i25 and G30 lines) that are really good on toe strikes.
