I know Chelsea in NYC is a very trendy, hip, but expensive part of town. Is this the case in London? Makes sense if he's a "young man about town" and his club is out in the burbs.

Yea. It’s obviously code for “ leave me out of it “. Kind of disappointing. You’d think he’d have helped corral him until it landed. I don’t know how close they are. But if it’s one of my boys he wouldn’t have assaulted anybody multiple times.

I agree that it seems likely he is trying for the unexpected reaction defense - I can't see any other explanation. It's a risky strategy as booze and drugs are usually an aggravating factor in the UK (see below), and being drunk on an aircraft is a serious offense (I have detailed the CAA views on this previously). Going to Crown Court means a jury trial, and higher potential custodial sentence should he be found guilty of one or more of the offences he is charged with. The other issue with the offenses as charged is even if he did settle with the alleged sexual assault victim (and bare in mind, she can file a civil case for damages as well as the criminal case), he still has 2 other alleged offenses at least one of which will be against the airline. Based on some quick research, Assault by beating is punishable by up to a year in jail, but for a first offense would probably be a community order, if taken on its own merits.

 

It's worth repeating that this is not necessarily some drunken jape that can be brushed under the carpet - the UK justice system appears to be treating this seriously

Has the European Tour said anything since it's initial statement? Is anyone on the European side of the pond talking about it? Talk radio, podcasts ,etc? Nobody over here will even sniff it. It's as if 'this kind of stuff doesn't happen in a gentlemen's game' so everyone is mum.

A Trial date has now been fixed for May next year. Thorbjorn will remain suspended by the European Tour until that time. That is a long time without competitive golf for him.

I wonder how his application for membership to those tours would go down? I guess that he could get exemptions for them but I cannot imagine that many tournament organisers would want him teeing it up until this is all sorted out.

Well pretty much the opposite. Old Poults may have opened an eye and saw Oleson in self destruct mode and and then just went back to "sleep". But I think you know that. :p
