Where to go from ping eye 2’s

Keep the Eye 2's for now and spend the money on working on your game. I gamed them from 93 until 2013 when I went through a few different sets and settled on what I have now. They're clubs that were ahead of their time. They aren't unforgiving by any stretch, and for the money you probably won't find something that much more forgiving. The only real thing you may pick up with new sets is the illusion of distance, the Eye 2's are very traditional in loft compared to new game improvement sets (50 degree PW vs 44).

I look at MOI, and CG to a lesser extent, with a hint of C Dimension. The final score isn't relevant when discussing forgiveness; it's a measure of how close that head is to Ralph Maltby's design principles, which are a low CG distant from the hosel.

MOI is the actual measure of mishit forgiveness.

Sole design is something to give attention to when looking at playability. This is what I consider to be the only real weakness of the Eye2 / Eye2+; the long irons have negative bounce. That got in my head and suddenly I had issues with them, LOL.

Removing my personal quirk from their consideration, they're quite viable, and deserving of consideration in any bag.

The i5 or i20 are great. Another vote for a bargain priced “modern loft” set. Biased, but Adams CB3 with the KBS Tour 90 shaft is very playable.

I was in Eye2s for a long time. The CB3s are better for me. Maybe for you as well.

Both of the Zings got lost in the Eye2's shadow. Obviously the Zing 2s looked better - not that that was hard to do, and many would still say they look horrible. But they were very user friendly for those that simply focused on the results.

Why would you need a modern lofted set?

Cut my teeth on Eye 2's. Still have a set of Eye 2's in SST and a set of Eye 2+'s in BeCu. When wanting to make a move, I thought the idea was to go "game improvement". Played a set of G20's for a few months. Tried some GI irons from a couple other manufacturers. Picked up a set of iBlades and this is the second season with them. Probably, for me, as close to the same playability as the Eye 2's. Just this morning, I did put the iBlades in "time out". Bagged the old Eye 2's and carded the best round in a couple weeks. There is nothing "wrong" with Eye 2's. As one poster suggested, don't get rid of them. The trade value isn't all that much. You may not end up in a good relationship with the replacement you decide on. If that would happen, you have the Eye 2's as a "fall back". Good luck!

As someone else has said - Get your color code lie and shaft length fitting from Pings Static Measurement website here http://nflightweb.ping.com/#ready

Go with a G set from G25 onwards and shop eBay and you'll pick up a nice set of irons at a great price. Forget any on the i range at this stage until you start seeing your scores coming down.

I'm with the same idea here that re-gripping is the best idea until you find something you like. I know you're talking about the zz-lite, but I've been a 28 a ways back, and I can assure you that unless you are the cruddiest driver in history, you don't shoot a +22, be happy, and say your irons aren't cutting it. Now, I could be wrong, but what you do have is _good feel_ and that's awesome. But the technology has moved on, and nothing you pick in the G/i range is going to be any worse than the eye2. It's a classic iron, and the all-timer, but 30 years of engineering has made serious advances.

I strongly suggest that you go to a golf store or pro shop, or whatever, and give some light shafts a try. Don't worry about the heads _at all_. They'll be fine. Try something with a modus 105 in it. See if you like it. Try something with a Dynamic Gold in it, like an XP95, and see how that goes. And try something with a ProjectX lz in it. Then, you can at least build what you like in more contemporary terms. From there, it's easy.

If you asked me to make a "right now" recommendation, i20s with CFS are can't-lose. i200 with a Modus 105 will probably fill you with the feel you want. And any of the G-series will be heads that when you aren't middled, will show you why they're better.

14 Pings. Blueprints are incredibly good. Fetch is the most underrated putter on the market. Don't @ me.

You are correct on the Zings---- I thought they were the ugliest club ever besides the Cleveland VAS--- BUT----- I found a pristine Zing SW on the pile at work. For some reason liked the way it sat. Messed with it some and loved the performance---- Got it in the front line bag and am playing it. Those of you know me knows that says a lot coming from me a confirmed dyed in the wool Cleveland 588 fan. And yes I could care less if it is conforming or not since I do not keep a stipulated handicap or play comp any more

I actually hate hybrids for whatever reason I get on better with 3/4/5 irons where are least the miss goes straight.

I actually barely hit driver when playing unless I’ve got loads of room I’ve been playing a much “safer” style of play and it’s been helping me shoot better scores I just was hoping to get some longer iron help without going to hybrids which just never feel right to me

At the beginning of 2019 I was excited. Nice new set of preowned G25s, a few lessons under my belt, lots of short game and putting practice. Bottom line: my hc went way up. The G25s were all over the place, occasionally ballooning and rocketing a shot over the green.

I'm 69, so I blamed myself. My son says my ball is too far forward. My father-in-law says it is too far back. Me, I decided it was my swing. I completely started using the Easiest Swing in Golf via Julian Mellor videos. I immediately started hitting the sweet spot nearly every shot--never, ever done that before....with divots AFTER the ball. But still, the ball unpredictably flying left and right and high and long.

In short (skipping a few weeks) I sold the G25s and bought a set of i5s, after a lot of trial and error with i20, S56, G30, AP1, JPX-825. I actually found the i5 and i20 to be pretty much identical, but I went with the less expensive i5s. I'm playing great again. I know where the ball is going and how to correct bad swings. I think I just lost focus with the G25s--so easy to swing and make what seems like great contact. Also, that Easiest Swing method has really helped me. Yesterday I played my set of Hogan Apex Edge Pros, which I couldn't hit for the life of me a month ago.

  • 9 months later...

Little update for anyone that cares I stuck with the eye 2’s up to 5 iron, got over my fears and added a 20° and 23° hybrid, went to ping anser driver (spin issues with g25, yes I’m sure it’s my swing lol) and have been on a nice downward trend of HC as of posting sitting at 22.4 with room for improvement as this season is just starting and I’m hitting a lot more GIR and even starting to make some birdies once in a while, I do plan on getting fit at some point just don’t have the time (buying a house takes way to much time/money) thanks to everyone who told me to just keep playing the eye 2’s
