Walking ahead

LICC

Recommended Posts

What do people think of this during recreational rounds? My view is walking ahead to your ball is preferable in order to keep up a good pace of play. As long as you are away from the line of the player behind you, everything should be fine.

Agree with your take. The criticism about where Koepka is standing in the other thread is ridiculous and is just part of a back door way to lessen the criticism against slow play posterboy Dechambeau

Another aspect is that I always walk, and usually get paired up with people in carts. If I had to wait for them to find their balls and hit before I even walk up ahead to my ball, the round would get very slow.

Oy. So now in addition to slow players being slow, they rag about the other players creeping up to keep pace. FFS. If you watch enough professional golf, you'll see it constantly. How many times have you seen a player hitting a 3rd into a par 5 after laying up, and their partner(s) is up near the green? Too many to count.

I do it frequently, but before I do it I discuss it with my playing partners. Most players are cool with it if you're off line, but a small percentage don't like it at all. If the others are in carts, it definitely helps one keep pace. In the end, common sense should rule the situation.

I was taught to always walk as close as you can to your ball, while staying out of the other players' way. In spite of what Brandel says, its been proper etiquette for as long as I've been playing golf, its a part of playing at a reasonable pace.

As for poor Bryson, I see he's averaging about 302 yards off the tee, 38th on the PGA Tour. At 10 yards shorter, 292 yards, are a bunch of players tied for 111th. Its not like he's miles longer than most of the rest, and there's no reason he can't at least START to gather his numbers at the same time as a shorter hitter is. Bryson has blamed caddies, he's blamed slow walkers, he's now blaming shorter hitters, he's looking everywhere except in the mirror.

This sounds just like my round over the weekend. I walked and was paired with two people in a cart. I would routinely walk up to my ball, but step away if I was in their line of sight. I even made a point of asking them if it bothered them but they were fine. In the end I pushed the round along at a good pace and we never had anyone waiting for us even though they spent a great deal of time in the woods. Bottom line is play ready golf and keep moving when you play and everyone won't be waiting to hit on each shot.

Yea. For a hooker like Rory I’d say Brooks could be 10 yards farther right and be better off. If I’m hitting a slinging draw I wouldn’t like you there. I’d likely subconsciously pull it to keep you from danger. Or moreso if I thought he was doing it on purpose as gamesmanship, I’d probably say something. Brooks is the guy who’d do that on purpose.

That would have to be a 100-yard hook. Rory is 237 to the pin and Brooks is probably 40-50 yards ahead of him.

Do note that Brooks is watching Rory. He's ready to move/duck in the very slim chance Rory mishit the ball. It's not like he's casually strolling to the green with his back to Rory. If I'm walking ahead, I generally pause when the player behind me is ready to pull the trigger.

Walk ahead, if it's a group you regularly play with you should know their games well enough to know where to put yourself so you're not in their way or harms way. If you're paired up, after a few holes you should be able to figure it out as well, to start I generally just stay on their backside and up a bit to make it almost impossible for them to hit a shot at me.

Sure. But definitely in his eye line. I’m all for walking ahead. But he could have walked ahead and stayed a touch farther right and still been playing “ ready golf” as some like to call it.

Wonder if he’s dumb enough to stand there if playing with bubba ? lol.

I'll do it if they are causing us to fall behind as a group. Matter of fact, if it's becoming an egregious pace, I'll go to my ball and play it. Ready golf. I've got no patience for others to look for a ball that is long gone, or make 27 club re-selections. Also, I've been known to be a little bit of a bully if you're 284 yards out on a par 5, and waiting for the green to clear - after your drive only went 239.

Recreational play is quite different than professional play. In a tournament, it is out of place if a player goes in front of the others wating to hit. I would call on the guy to sit back until I have my shot completed. Very rud and unprofessional behavior. Even the best of the best should not practice this. You had your shot, now let me have mine.

This is not quite as bad as stepping on my putting line but bad enough.

Somebody needs to cue up the Bubba/Elk video from a few years back? I am gonna walk ahead and wait.?

All joking aside, in referenced instance, Bubba was absolutely correct.

Watch how the majority of the professional behave, maybe you'll learn something besides LOL.

What one does will come back to them, soon enough.
