All of those players mentioned would have either gotten much better without going to college or could have stepped on stage sooner and gotten exponentially better in the time they wasted in college. Look at any country outside of the US and their elite players skip university and go pro. No wonder the PGA has gone from 90% American players to 50% in the last 20 years. Same goes with LPGA, if they miss their window of opportunity when young they have a very difficult time making enough money to keep playing.

I think the benchmark has to be PGA tour.  You reference elite players outside of the US skipping university to go pro, but not many are on the PGA tour.  I haven't checked the numbers, but I'd wager a large majority of PGA players went to college.  Not all of them finished, but they went at least a few years.  A guy like Akshay best have a back-up plan which I'm sure he does through his parents.  I still think he made the jump too early.

Whats the difference is Yealimi Noh and Akshay?  Sure he has stiffer comp. but she is straight out of high school as well.  Seemed a little sheltered to me.

Women seem to have a much more limited time playing golf before they have a family

If your able to make the cut week in and week out on  and be competitive inside the top 20.   There is no reason to go to college.  Take Lexi Thompson you can argue her best golf in her life was between 18-22. She made quite a bit of money playing on the LPGA vs going to College.

Guys tend to keep growing and get stronger in college. So it's a good place to play while they gain strength.

Nothing sexist about that comment.  Only thing missing is "Keep back in the kitchen woman."

Come on if think that is sexist you got issues.

There is a reason the LPGA has a daycare that travels with them on tour.  It's a little hard to be pregnant and play professional golf.

I've talked to more than one former LPGA tour member and all them say the same thing that a lot women have to leave tour once they want to start a family.  Some come back but they never really have the same level of commitment.

Guys don't have the exact same issue but if we are honest how many guys had to quit playing golf because they ended up getting married and having a family and the financial commitments were kind of too much.

@Tiger1873 I get what you're saying but that definitely wasn't the most PC way to phrase it.

Women/girls tend to develop at an earlier age and stop growing once they hit their teens. Men/boys continue to grow and develop into their early 20s. That's why you see so many 15, 16, 17 year old girls competing in Women's US Opens and on the LPGA Tour. Physically it's easier for a teenage girl to compete with adults when compared to a teenage boy.

Women do seem to have a much more narrow window of opportunity when it comes to playing professional sports and golf specifically. We still see a number of 40 and 50 year old men competing in majors and on tour, but rarely do you see that on the women's side.

However, it's not really fair or even accurate to say that this is only or primarily because women want to get pregnant and start a family.

Forgot you have this secret line into everyone.  My secret to you.  Everyone has families if they want them and it becomes harder and harder to share the same level of commitment you once  had.

I work in big data and at one point in my life it was only and then my wife.  Then came three kids and honestly I give only wants required of me at work now.

Most guys I know work 2 to 3 times as hard after they have a family. I seen guys work themselves to death because they needed the job for their family and work as they could to keep it and get a promotion.

No one forces women to quit golf but we are talking about professional golf where a lot money is involved in both travel and sponsorships.  The reality is they can't have both at this level. Most them actually do quite well and stay involved in golf.  I would even say some finally find true happiness they never will on tour.

College is great but more costly for women. As for Akshay even if he never does well on tour I am sure her be able to tell great stories and sell golf equipment or even land a job as PGA pro somewhere making 150k or so. Either way he will be fine.

Since when is stating the truth sexist?  There is nothing that he said in that statement that is sexist.  My daughter who plays D1 golf has said the same thing.

There is nothing said that was not PC either.  I showed my daughter the thread and she laughed at the sexist and PC comments.

I feel for women who play while pregnant or come back after giving birth.  Jackie Stoelting posted a pic on twitter, her putting in driving range time while her baby boy was asleep in a baby carrier a few feet away.  One of the comments was something like, "I know you are a pro and all, but have some consideration to your son's safety!"

Just wow at what people feel they ok with saying sometimes on social media.

^ What am I looking at? Sorry, it is a slow day for me.

A coach posted a video of their student wearing a Stanford sweatshirt. Someone asked about him going to Stanford. Coach replies that going pro is the goal and Stanford is a backup plan.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Good to aim high.  It makes sense - he is one of the best in the world for his age.

It makes sense for the coach from a marketing perspective.

The family pays for the coach to go with them to tournaments and they're in Canada.  I've seen him at US Kids Worlds, FCG Worlds, etc.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Looks like Akshay is getting a sponsors exemption this week into The American Express event.  Hoping he has made the swing changes needed after leaving GG to succeed.

did he leave or parent told him he is leaving?  Inquiring minds need to know. 🙂

Anyway, all the years this thread has been here I never bothered to look then I saw the kid's name yesterday and saw him interviewed and remembered this thread and checked in to see what had been written over the years.

Seems well spoken in general and about golf, and 18 greens?  Sponsor exemption well deserved and he's making the most of it.  Hope he makes the cut.

Is it confirmed that he is no longer with GG or Terrel and back to Duncan?  I am going to assume because nobody else posted about it on their IG.  Looking for confirmation.

Confirmed he is no longer with GG by a friend that played a practice round with him last month.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.
