Have any Lefty's out there abandoned and switched to Righty?

Recommended Posts

Picked up hitting again a few weeks back after not golfing in 10 years or so (30 years old now).

I'm at a point now where there are just so many inconsistencies in my swing plane, golf grip, downswing, pretty much everything where I've consider just relearning right handed for consistency sake (but also selfishly because lack of equipment options for southpaws).

I'm not so terrible that it's a complete abandonment on swing (6i, 165~ carry, 80mph clubhead speed, just no consistency in ball strike so launch angle anywhere from 14-20 degrees), but I'm just curious if anyone out there has made the switch after initially learning southpaw.

Not me. Natural lefty here. Started right handed and bought my first lefty set when I was 16. Never going back after 44 years.

Livin' proof that Lefties are not naturally talented.

I likely hit my first shots with my dad's right handed wedge, but when I got my first club the pro recommended going lefty. Played lefty for about 8 years getting down to about a 4 HC in HS, but those who saw me take a few swings right handed thought that side looked better (as I had an over the top move left handed). Switched to righty (except putting) fall of my Sr year of HS and shot 37 in a HS match that spring. Was playing most days after HS, but when I went to college played much less often and didn't feel like I had the muscle memory right handed and ended up switching back to lefty my Jr year. I didn't play that much in my 20s and 30s, but think my left handed swing has improved since getting back into things and taking some lessons in my 40s. The only time I played right handed the last 30 years was one summer coming off knee surgery when that side seemed to put less torque on my knee- mixed results from the right side that summer...lefty has been better since.

hey! I can lend some insight into this....i made the switch about 4 years ago. probably right around when i made this account. I'm a former college baseball player that bats left-handed. everything else i do i'm right hand dominant, though. i wanted to golf and couldnt shake the baseball swing to save my life - like bad bad. foot coming off the ground front knee collapsing probably 45* out to in...all sorts of bad. clubhead speed was stupid fast though...so that was nice?

anyways...i hate being bad at anything so i said screw it...dad let me try your driver and piped the first ever right handed swing 200 absolutely dead straight. well....that was the last time that happened for like 6 months but i decided then i was a right handed golfer since i could build the swing up.

i used my dads clubs for a while, watched a bunch of youtube videos and learned what the heck i'm _supposed_ to be doing. once i could hit the ball pretty consistently i went and got a lesson. i explained my situation, they looked at me like i'm crazy, watched me hit a few balls and said "okay maybe you're onto something here." my clubhead speed has always been very high, figuring out timing, face control, swing plane, and damn near everything else that goes into it has been a work in progress. I'm currently a 6 handicap and that's solely due to being able to bomb it into the fairway and figure it out from there. I still have a long ways to go - still flip a bit and sway in the downswing, but i absolutely love golf and spend every day wishing i was on the range grinding and figuring it out.

TLDR: switching to right hand is the worst financial decision i've ever made

So last line was sarcastic...you are happy switching to right.

definitely - i love golf now and the insane frustrations of being awful when i was a lefty kept me from even trying to play - although i'm guessing i could have gotten decent by practicing left handed - switching to right may have just given me a goal to practice more.

This week, the PGA Tour is at TPC San Antonio on the Oaks Course for the Valero Texas Open. GolfWRX was on-site Tuesday to catch a glimpse into the bags of some of the world’s top golfers.

The field of 144 is getting ready to battle starting Thursday for the $7.7 million purse, with $1.386 million going to the winner. The tournament is also the last event where players can qualify for The Masters, just like Canadian Corey Conners did last year.
