80 Gram Driver shafts

Recommended Posts

Right now I am gaming a Vapor Pro 8.5 head the green one. With a RIP tour Phenom low torque 80 gram X Stiff and I love it. But it does not go anywhere. I have a M1 13.5 with Flowerband Whiteboard 83 X stiff and hit that about 10-12 yards shorter than my driver. I am trying to figure out if getting a new head or shaft will give me the distance I should be getting. I was told maybe an Oban 80 gram shaft but I am not familiar with Obans. I have always played Diamana blueboards and whiteboards.

A lot of people had issues with the performance of the Vapor range of drivers.I doubt a shaft change will give you what youre looking for, you would probably find a larger jump in performance getting a new head and on a launch monitor if you can. I played a Covert Tour for ages and tried a Vapor Pro when they launched and I lost yardage vs the Covert. I went to an M1 with a Hzrdus Black 75 X and after my Covert was stolen and the M1 is performing better, Ive had the M1 since they launched Gen2.

Need to check your strike point with driver.... you may be hitting shots low in the face.. heel, etc. Also, if you're swinging an 80g shaft in X flex, you better have some real speed otherwise you're likely launching the ball too low, with too little spin.

I feel like most guys back in the day that used heavy shafts did so because that was the only way to get control and have stiffer tip section. That's not really true any more with modern tech and you rarely see 80g shafts in driver these days... Even guys who really move the ball like Champ, Rory, etc are in 70g class or less.

80g is a lot??! Good lord.

First driver I could keep in play had 107g graphite, at 44.5"....

I play an 80g shaft in my driver and find that I have a much better ball flight in terms of launch window and dispersion as opposed to a 70 gram shaft. For me, it's more about controlling my tempo which can get rather quick with a lighter setup.

Yea thats what I've experienced, the heavier shafts seem to help with tempo

It all depends on WHY the ball "isn't going anywhere". Swing speed, ball speed, impact quality, spin rates.....we need that data to know why you aren't getting what you want out of the club. A lighter shaft may help, it also may hurt, we have no way of knowing without more data. Also those particular Nike drivers were definitely not the longest. They had very high CGs and also were not the most forgiving in the world which is a recipe for erratic spin and ball speed numbers depending on strike location.

10 grams anywhere on a golf club is enough to notice. Grip, shaft or head.

You also mentioned in another thread that 2 grams isn’t noticeable or one swingweight. So I say to anyone throw two 1.25” strips of lead tape on your 7 iron and tell me it’s not heavier when you swing it.

The head is the most sensitive area of the club, by far. You've mixed me up with someone else....I've never said 2 grams on the head isn't noticeable

You dont mention play lengths, but if your 3W is a good fit, use that as a baseline and subtract 5 grams uncut shaft weight for each inch longer for the driver, but like others mention, the head you play is not "up to date" and far from the best for distance, but also pay attention to where you make contact on the face, it better be on the upper 1/3, and close to the heads VCOG.

5-10g in the shaft is much different than 5-10g in the head. When you spread out that weight over the length of the shaft it’s not as much as you think.

As for the 2g comment I’m not sure what kind of lead tape you are using but 2 1/2 inches is probably more than 2g. For reference a dime weighs 2 1/2 g. Tape a dime to the back of your 7-iron and see if you can tell a difference in swing weight. If you think you can it’s just a placebo effect.
