My sons team finally got it going as a team in a Friday / Saturday 36 hole

invitational.   First day was tough with a 319 second day was a good day more in line with expectations with a 295.    Won the tournament with a 614.   2nd place team 631.   3rd was 647
played at 2 different courses tees were approx 6700

If Ponte Vedra plays well I think they will be tough to beat. They just shot 273 in county championship at World Golf Village. Their six scores were 67-68-69-69-71-72 and the player who shot 72 finished triple, double after being -5 through 16.

They played from 6300ish.  I was there.  They played the blue tee with some holes back a bit from the marker and it was VERY wet with no rollout.  Rating would be closer to 70.   They also are a public school.

Brandon Valdes went -10 for Dr. Phillip's in the Winter Park Invitational on Saturday.  -8 on the backside with 6 birdies in a row to close out the round.  Flipping impressive.

No. I’m not. Again I was there.  They played the blue tee with a couple holes moved back so it was right around 6300.  I know what the scorecard says and I also know what they were playing

Regarding Chiles, I do wonder how much better Tallahassee area junior golf is going to get with Kayla Shaul and Seminole Legacy Course going all-in on holding local junior academies?  Paired with the renovations done to that course done over the past year+, I'm excited to get up there this winter and check it out.

My club here in AZ just held a Jr Invitational this past weekend for HS kids. The girls played from just under 6100 yards and the boys played 6800 yards.

Was it a HS tournament or a Junior tournament?  HS generally plays around 6500 until you get to the state tournament.  JuniorTours in a 13-18 age group are going to play from 6800-7000.

JGAA, not a HS event but primarily HS aged kids. My daughter was too young to play. 
 

What distance do HS girls play in Florida?

HS girls in Florida in regular season matches will play from the shortest set of tees.    The state Championship only plays from 5400 yards.  Junior tournaments the girl's will play 5800 - 6100 yards.

I love HS golf.  I think it is a great time for the better players to be able to work on things and get to use it in competition. 

 

The problem with girl's HS golf is that it is really bad.  I mean, really, really bad.  An above HS girl's golfer is considered someone that can shoot below a 45.  In most cases a 45 is going to be the #1 golfer on a girl's team.

My sons team seams to have distances between 6500-6800.   There are a few where the host team will move up the tees to try to help themselves.   However they could have played from

the ladies tees and that’s still a pretty good score.  

we are going to a Friday / Saturday in fort Myers the south Florida pga hs championship ?    You guys know anything about it and how is playing ?

Our school won the SFPGA HS Championship last year.  I think our team is better this year.  We are not allowed to travel outside the 4 county area so have to play everything local until Districts this year.  

 

SFPGA does a good job.  I just don't like the 10 stroke limit rule for a tournament of this caliber.  The East Coast had 10 teams in it this year.  I think Covid stopped the West coast Invitational from being a large event.

 

You guys are playing 6400 yards, but looks like a tough course with a 72.5 rating and a 140 slope.

Gulf Coast is good.

 

We are allowed to travel for the playoffs.

There are very good lady golfers in Ohio and many of them will never be heard of because they do not play big junior tournaments. Top lady programs in Ohio will have 4 scores (out of 5) shoot below 300 as a team.

As a junior and senior my daughter advanced to the Florida State Championship as an individual.  She went with the team as a Freshman and Sophomore.  Team finished third in the state as a Freshman.  Her Junior and Senior years she averaged 37.5 and 36.8 respectively.  Another girl in he same class on her team averaged really close to the same and went on to play D1 golf as well.  Unfortunately, number 3 struggled to break 45 and numbers 4/5 struggled to break 50 so the team didn't advance the last two years.

Problem we face in the Middle Atlantic and Northeast is we aren't Florida, Texas, or Arizona.   To many coaches and parents laugh at our scores here.  A golfer shooting 73 on a 73.4/139 @ 6900 yards, but its not a 70.   In my limited experience Florida courses as a whole play shorter and the slopes are less.  Weather is a factor here as well.

 

I would welcome any Florida golfer into the Northern VA, PA, Ohio area and see how they hold up.

A 6900 yard course up north is usually shorter than a 6900 yard course in south Florida.  Even in North Florida, a 6900 yard course can be shorter.  It is the difference in hills and no hills.  South Florida is always a true 6900 yards.  During rainy seasons, like now, a 6900 yard course is longer because there is no roll.  Went and played a course up in Ocala last weekend where there were hills on several holes.  430 yd par 4 played like 400 down hill.  Likewise, the 340 yd par 4 played  360.

 

Scrolling through the AJGA's, the kids from Fl and Texas hold up well in those tournaments.

Bring any high school team you want down to Florida and see how they do.  They’ll get smoked. 
I grew up in NJ, also lived in Michigan for awhile.   Was involved with gold in both states. 
The level of golf down here is much higher.    ( Same with other sports too)

I would say this is true for South FL for sure, but a Tallahassee-area course like Summerbrook plays 73.9/140, Golden Eagle is 73.6/135 and I'm not sure about Seminole Legacy but it plays 7800 from the tips and was designed by the Nicklaus Group. 

 

I tell my kids all the time, there are two Floridas--the Florida with palm trees, and the Florida without them.

 

The weather factor sound like the argument that B1G football fans in arguments with SEC and ACC football fans.  To me, this argument lost a lot of steam years ago when I saw Miami and FSU come up to Michigan Stadium and beat good Wolverines teams.  Maybe apples to oranges, but I think good players can really play just about anywhere and adjust to climate.

Chiles won the FHSAA 3A state championship, but there were better HS teams in 2A and 1A that didn't attend this event.  The Florida School BHS didn't even make it to the state championship.

We played in the carolina's and virgina and I would say weather and type of courses around there are a major factor in the scores. Also up in northern states you have more elevation and creeks that run though the course which means you need better course management.

 

I wouldn't say playing florida courses are any easier though the are just different and dealing with the heat is just as much as an issue as the cold weather is up north.  This is a little too simplistic and is a little broad but  one reason I think you see lower scores in florida is the condition of the average course tends to be much better and they are designed so seniors can play an easy bogey.   

 

One reason why traveling to different regions is so important you really can't compare until you play head to head with golfers on the same course.
