The Parsons Cup, USA vs. South Korea, Boom Baby! - Hypothetical

This isn't an actual event. But as I was catching up on the Solheim Cup I wondered two things.

1 - Which happens 1st? A match play event between the USA and South Korea or A women's professional golf tournament at Augusta National?

 

2 - If there were a USA vs S. Korea match play event, what should be the team composition? How many KLPGA players? You get 2 captains picks, who do you pick? Do you go chalk by the Rolex Rankings? Top players from Korea listed for reference.

i like the idea. If you want more eyeballs, create big events like the one suggested. I will be the first to admit though that South Korean golf does not have the history of US and European golf, just in terms of longevity. BUT you can’t start a tradition without it being a thing. Top to bottom right now the SK girls would dominate, so it might not be fun to watch until there is more parity. But play the matches and see what happens.

I thought of this throughout the Solheim. The Solheim was exciting, but the it wasn't exactly the pinnacle of women's golf! I think the Korean girls would crush either of the teams. A second 12 of Koreans might win!

But as another thought experiment, think of an Asian team - adding Nasa, Hinako, some Jutanargarns, Shanshan and Minjee.

With match play, I don't know if I'd use the term "crush". In a four day stroke play event, the small differences in scoring average add up. Georgia Hall's scoring average this season is 71.55, over a stroke higher than Lexi's 70.25. Over a four day tournament she's going to finish an average of five strokes behind. At the Solheim she beat Lexi 2&1.

 

I'm as guilty as anyone looking at world rankings and stroke play results, but match play is a different beast. The Korean team has won only one of three International Crown events.

I'm impressed with Hannah Green, but she doesn't qualify for that company yet! I am not doubting that she will, but not yet.

I know that you have talked about the randomising effect of match play before, and how matches might be a lot closer and/or more difficult to predict than we'd expect. I agree. However, over 28 matches i think the numerical superiority of the Asians would come through resoundingly. There might be a few upsets on the way, but it would end in a sound victory for the Asians. Whatever the case, I'd like to see it! It would be more interesting than the Solheim for me!

How so? Lee has 5 LPGA wins in almost 6 yrs. Green has 2 in almost 4yrs one of which is a major. Both have 7 professional wins. You could argue that Lee has actually underachieved so far in her career.

Not sure if it matters. Lexi and Danielle both performed poorly at the SC despite their higher world ranking. The top 200 players in the world are still pretty darn good.

The vagaries of match play mean that on any given day, a lower ranked player can triumph against a higher ranked player. So long as they are within a general skill level, it can "balance" out. In match play, you don't have to shoot a better round than your opponent -- you can afford to have a bad hole or two or perhaps blow up on a hole or two, and recover to win the match.
