Titleist EXP-01

I heard the EXP was going to be a cheaper urethane option, kind of like project a or q-star tour, etc. At least that is what I heard.

Found this on eBay. Looks like a urethane cover with deeper dimples than the AVX. Maybe lower compression/lower cost alternative to the ProV1 to win back market share vs the lower cost options from other OEMs or dtc offerings? If so, wonder if they will price it at $35 and discontinue the Tour Soft which is approaching the end of its 2 year cycle?

Love the TS, but too much money for a surlyn ball?! Going cheaper urethane to compete with QST and P(a) would be a smart/good move!

It will be interesting if it is a cheaper urethane model. I'm sure they'd love to regain some share, but I wonder whether they'd actually make more or less money going this route. So far, they've just stuck with the premium ball / premium price point, and those that want it pay for it. They can obviously run the actual numbers (vs. us all guessing/speculating), but it would seem like they risk cannibalizing some ProV sales to the die hard Titleist fans here. So far, the losses may be to the more value conscious people. Of course, it could also just be that the market has moved, and if they don't eat their own lunch (ProV) someone else will.

If this is a lower price point urethane covered ball I don’t see a reason to worry about Pro V1 sales. People may test this ball to see how it stacks up against the Pro V1 models. But I would think this ball will impact the sales of Srixon Q Star Tour and TM Project A more simply because the ball is a Titleist. The Tour Soft competes well against QST and Project A but the 2 piece design and non-urethane cover are detracters.

I've played the EXP-01 ball, just for one round so far.

I've played the AVX for the past year or so. It probably isn't the best ball for me as I'm not very high spin player nor do I balloon shots but I really like the ball. I really like the soft feel of it. Distance is about the same as ProV1 for me. It does spin less though and it took me some time to get used to that, especially around the green.

The EXP flew noticeably higher than the AVX. Distance off the driver was the same to a touch longer than the AVX. Same for pretty much all the clubs in the bag. Spin off the short irons and wedges was a lot closer to the ProV1. I virtually never spun an AVX back but I had some full wedges with the EXP that spun back a decent amount (10-15 ft was the most). Most of the shots would hit and stop right where it hit. I noticed the increased spin the most on pitches and chips. With the AVX, I had to account for some decent roll out. Didn't really have to do that with the EXP. I even got good spin out bunkers which I don't normally see. I played the same ball for 15+ holes (lost it on 16) and the cover still looked good with no marks on it.

The ball does feel soft...as soft or maybe a little softer than the AVX. I like it.

I've since found out this is a new urethane ball that will retail around $40. Evidently they spent some time working on the aerodynamics to get the higher flight without spinning a ton. Don't know how many layers or compression or anything else.

I've had very limited time with it but the early returns are good. I'm looking forward to playing it some more and plan to get some once they are released.

More like an AVX with more short game spin. Golf.com story specifically mentions the "346 dimple design, is designed to enhance short game spin": https://www.golf.com/gear/balls/2019/10/01/titleist-exp-01-golf-ball-experimental/

That's a confusing statement because the dimples won't do anything to enhance short game spin. The dimples will help stabilize flight and create lift. That might allow it to fly higher than the AVX and keep it in the air and stable on low spin shots of the driver. The spin in the short game is going to be created by enhancements to the cover material. My guess from reading the article is that they have something similar to Srixon Spin Skin or the new stuff Bridgestone is supposedly coming out with this year.

I agree it's a strange statement, but it's essentially the only thing Titleist would confirm about the ball in the story.

lol the moment I saw this story on the front page I had to find this thread. The fact that they purposefully gave out no real information on what to expect from this ball is going to send this forum into a speculation frenzy with no shortage of "insiders" and detectives who are POSITIVE about the ball's true nature. It's almost like Titleist knows us and just wants to troll us. Good luck to all the Nancy Drew's and Sherlock Holmes out there
