The new Ben Hogan driver with the helium shaft delivered for me. The biggest problem for everyone is that it's not available to test compare like the other OEM's are. If by chance you can possibly get your hands on one, perhaps someone you play with that has one or someone on the driving range and they'll let you hit it, you may be pleasantly surprised and it's at a much better price to boot............

So I added about 12 grams of lead tape to the Ping Max at the heal in the same spot as it would be with the K15. Now the Ping Max plays just like my K15 SFT.

I tried the Max today, and not all drives were perfect(imagine that,) but hit some straight bullets that were long. Hope to take it out today and hit some more with it. This is a fun driver to hit. I think it will do a lot better when the weight gets in, 12.5 gram replacing 7. It is as long as the Fusion, and a much lower flight, so on a windy day it will be the ticket. Do I like it more than the Fusion, yes! Very forgiving.

Played 18 today and drove horribly for 7 holes, then I remembered not to hit this like an iron. My hands were getting ahead of the clubface and leaving it wide open. When I waited for the head, everything changed, and this driver came alive, and then it was nothing but fairways. My friend was kicking me until I figured it out., then I turned him on his head after that, and the score dropped in half as well. I also just got the 12.5 weight, but don't know when I will play again to test it out, bummer.

Sounds like you have a reasonble fit now. I would think that adding about three swingweight points with that heavier weight might be much harder to mange head control and tempo.

For some reason I find it easier to control with a little more weight. I also cut 3/4" off the shaft, so I am just bringing it back to where it was. After I figured out the timing, this driver really performed. Getting the hands out early is a real deal breaker on the driver. Just a little patience reaps big rewards.

Most find clubs with heavier swing weights easier to control.

I asked myself the same questions a couple of months ago.

I was looking for slightly more distance and went to a couple of demo days including a super dooper OEM shaft fitting session etc. I went happy to spend about $500 to get what i needed.........I was really disappointed that nothing really gave me even the paltry 10 - 15 yards I would have been happy with .

Instead I bought one of those very flexible weighted driver length practice things. Just Wow! (for a lot less than I was happy to spend on just a shaft)

After only a couple of practice sessions doing the drills I "felt" the club was travelling faster where it mattered when i played and my swing was much more in sync and repeatable. My regular playing partners confirmed I was definitely longer off the tee.

Hmmm I hear some of you say.........Luckily I also have some before and after hard data.......

My first driver fitting session was with Trackman and once you set up a free account - they are very generous with their data so I had a starting point with club head speed. I was averaging about 86 mph. 2 months later I was measured on a Flightscope setup. 91 mph av. I've gone from av 225yds to av 245 yds total including roll. About 185yds carry to 210 yds carry.

I now know its not really about equipment but rhythm, timing and tempo. IMHO All drivers made in the last 4-5 years are pretty much equal when it comes down to tech.

I am 60 yo male with a 10 hcp and play twice per week with x2 artificial hips, about 15 extra kilos than the Dr recommends and a dodgy ticker.

I will share the hard data for the doubters when I figure out how to do it :-)

I was struggling with the Max until I waited for the club head to catch up, then it was a thing of beauty, very straight. Before that I was ready to throw it in the trash. Friday I should be able to test it with the 12.5 weight, if the weather doesn't go crazy with the temperature down shift coming then.

> Far be it from me to offer up a suggestion for D replacement recommendations. Should be heading to your LGS to audition the various D's available. Determine what may suitable for your swing and eye. Sort of what I did over the course of the last year or so. Trying different D head and shaft combinations. The conclusion, the one that offered the best all around results was a 10.5* Ping G400 Max with the Alta 55g shaft in regular. No other D offered the combination of acceptable distance, control and feel. A real fairway finder! Not that much longer in distance than the 910 D2 it replaced. The major benefit realized was it just wants to go straight, even when ball contact is something less than center face. As I'm wont to do with some regularity.

>

> Tried A flex shafts during the auditioning process. Realized the best measured distances so equipped, but would experience some bad hooks if I tried to step on it a bit. Shafts below 50g and flexy were a dangerous proposition when I swung aggressively. Been liking it at the standard setting so much, haven't gotten around to "spinning the dial" to see if I can realize any marginal improvements by the exercise.

>

> Been averaging ~ 230 yards with it (this 68 year old senior doesn't hit as far as I once did). More than pleased with that. And reliably in and around the fairway. Driving of the golf ball with a D has become a strength in my otherwise very average golf game. As always, YMMV.

>

I'm in the same boat as you. I'll be 70 in January and my driver distance has diminished. I've been playing a 10.5* Cally Rogue set at +2 Draw with a Vista Pro 55g Senior shaft. It's been inconsistent, but my misses usually go left. I'm going to go back to the stock regular flex Aldila Synergy shaft that came with the club. I'm resigned to the fact that the days of driving the ball 240+are over. Hitting fairways is the key for me. My short game is good and I'm a pretty good putter. I can still shoot 80 from 6300 yard tees, but only when I drive straight.

Can't agree more that the archer degradation can be stunted/delayed with a proper fitness routine to maintain mostly flexibility and somewhat for strength. Then get fit for the proper bow (club) to maximize benefit. As one noted, different transitions can wrack havoc with lite/senior flex shafts and squaring the club face. The novel approach to shave the face may not be as much of a factor with the newest drivers. The geometry and face thickness may not be improved if shaved.

Played today just to see what would happen with the Ping Max with the 12.5 weight. Now I am hitting it left for some reason, and very long. This thing for the most part is very straight, and I got to places I have never been before. I think the weight adds some kick to it, and the Distanza shaft doesn't hurt either. I was knocking down pars easily after I realized the extra weight helped produce a draw.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm not super long off the tee either. I tried some drivers in the golf store and the Ping G series was consistently longer for me, vs the various Callaway composite drivers I tried.

I'm new to golf technology so still learning, but I'm also a mechanical engineer so I have my hypotheses. The market seems to be favoring light clubs to increase swing speed - I've read people/companies talking about 2-5mph gains in club head speed for more distance. But physics says the velocity of the golf ball is determined by the speed AND weight of the object hitting it:

Club Weight x Club Speed = Ball Weight x Ball Speed (in physics, m1*v1 = m2*v2)

(Edit: this is incomplete, see post #98)

Adding 5mph to a 100mph club speed is 5% improvement. I feel like it would take a lot to find an extra 5mph in my swing. Adding 12.5g to a 200g driver is 6.3% improvement. I don't think it would bring my swing speed down anything significant so that seems like a much easier option to add a few ball mph. I know there's other stuff going on in terms of spin, launch angles, etc. but it's a place to start.

The Ping driver heads (with metal crowns) felt heavier to me than the Callaways with the forged crowns. I tried same shafts on both and Ping felt like heavier swing weight, so club head must have been a few g heavier. My dispersion and most everything else looked the same between the two, but Ping just went longer.

Ping G heads are known to be on the heavier side vs Callaway and I believe Taylormade. I am talking head only, not total weight.

Turning 68 next week & play twice a week. I play a Titleist 917 D2 10.5*, 45" with a Tensei Blue 55 stiff flex shaft. Smooth tempo and average carry around 235 with a little rollout. I've experimented with different lofts, regular & senior flexes and longer shafts looking for those extra yards just like everyone else. 45" is the longest I can play and still hit center face consistently. I know the 917 is not the longest head out there, but it's the one I hit the most fairways with. At the end of the day that's all I really care about.

Put a Super Charged shaft in it, 55 gram reg flex, and did so much better. The Distanza is just too whippy for my inconsistent swing. The Super Charged shaft was money, long and straight enough. Got me way out there, further than the Distanza and with much better control.

Save your money. The fusion is about as good as it gets for low speed seniors. I’m 67 have the fusion 10.5 and hit it about 210. I also have the epic flash 10.5 and ping g400 max 10.5, they all go about the same distance, tried tons of shafts. For me I have a level angle if attack, I like a 65 gram stiff shaft. Goes straight, lighter shafts go hi right. Ever swing is different. Clubs are way over rated. It’s swing, then ball, the club. I play a prov1x. Good luck with your search for distance

Also as another member stated, I find I like heavier heads, shafts and grips go farther for me. Better tempo, better dispersion and distance. All my drivers are around 335-345 total weight and 45.5 to 46 inches and n length. I add heavier weights to Calloway and ping.

I've been playing an original Cobra LTD set up at 11.5*. I've tried others along the way, and if I had the money, I might look around for a 10.5* or 12* TM M4 to replace it. I had a 10.5 in a rental set I used in Atlanta last year, and it was so long, straight, and forgiving. I spend most of a summer fighting a Rogue last year, but I have been happy going back to the LTD.

I would think the Kinetic energy you impart on the ball is the important figure. E=1/2mv^2...... In other words energy increases linearly with mass, but increases exponentially with velocity.... You get a much bigger bang with an increase in swing speed than you do with an increase in club head mass.

With more weight you increase mass force on the ball. So even if your club length is shorter, sometimes a shorter arc is easier to swing faster. I will be playing the F8 tomorrow as it really does well with the added weight in the draw position.

I put the F8 in play today for nine holes. I added a lot of weight to the draw port to help fight the slice, and it worked. I could actually see the gear effect in the air, fun to watch. Driver kept me in play all day. Nice to shoot a low score again.
